How Witches Handle “Exhausted by Caregiving” – Ep. 274

Today, we’re looking at understanding the stress of caregiving and how witches manage this exhaustion.

Our discussion draws on the experiences of my friend Steve, a caregiver to his aged parents at a nursing home. Steve’s experiences expose the traumatic stress and emotional burden associated with repeated exposure to suffering. As caregivers, this can lead to what is known as compassion fatigue.

To combat this, I share three practical insights.

How Witches Create a Surprising Delight for Themselves

My husband was dancing, sitting in his seat in the new Thai Restaurant.
He loved the music. Current pop music built on the grooves of 70’s R&B and Soul.

I suggested this new Thai restaurant.
I had no idea he’d get this delighted look on his face. He’s written music/songs and produced music for a feature film. Some years ago.

I loved the food.
He loved the music.
We’re going to return to this restaurant.

What a surprise and delight.

I have three insights for you.

1. Put yourself someplace for a positive surprise.

Would you like to meet people who like to learn? Perhaps, attend a workshop or a speech. I’ve already shared the new restaurant with awesome music example.

Where could you go to have a great experience?

2. Enjoy their enjoyment.

Yes. It was fun for me to see my husband have a delightful experience. I noticed that I felt uplifted and joyful, too.

Many of us think that getting stuff feels best. However, many people discover that shared experiences rise above.

Who do you care about? How can you support their enjoyment?

3. Feel the Goddess-Support Effect.

Goddess works through you as you support others.

How Witches Reveal Their Spiritual Path to a New Romantic Partner

“You’re a what?!” Mark said when Eleanor revealed to him that she is a witch.
He then ghosted her that same day.
Crap. I realize that Eleanor is better off without Mark in the long run.
It still hurts.

Have you had experiences like this?

I have three insights for you.

1. Don’t Reveal Your Heartfelt Truth Too Soon.

“Hi. I have depression.” Starting a first encounter like this may torpedo a possible relationship. The same holds true for being a witch.

I’m a witch with depression and dyslexia…my husband is truly supportive.

Before you bring up something that may rock your new romantic partner, create some good times first.

2. Ask yourself, “Does this person demonstrate openness to new ideas?”

Some people just cannot find their way to being open to new ideas or different possibilities.

“Look for this in a life partner: Kind, flexible, and tells the truth.” – Tom Marcoux, author 

We’re talking about assessing whether the new romantic partner in your life is flexible.

When you’re thinking about, perhaps, revealing your spiritual path, you could ask:

“I’m curious. Was there a time when you heard something you didn’t like, and then you later changed your thoughts about that thing?”

Listen carefully. Does your new romantic partner demonstrate flexibility?

You might eventually say, “I would like to share something with you. There is a lot of misinformation out there. So, how about we talk about some things I have personally experienced?”

3. Expect possible resistance and if appropriate provide a little time and space.

If you do encounter resistance, you may want to give them a chance to process their situation.

Remind them of how you treat people well. Also, remind them of their personal experiences with you.

Give them some time. You may be surprised at the eventual, positive response you get.

Or you’ll learn that your paths need to separate.

How Witches Make Other People Happy

“They’re going to kill my cat!” I thought, finding that the vial of insulin I just bought for my cat was empty!
It was 10:30 pm at night. Time for my cat, Magick, to receive his nightly injection of insulin.

How does a veterinary hospital make up for providing an empty vial with no medicine?
First thing, the veterinary hospital team member can stop and listen. And listen well.

Sometimes, it really looks like people have forgotten how to treat each other with appropriate care.

I have three insights for you.

1. Listen first.
Want to make someone happy? Listen first. Hear them out. Ask them follow-up questions. Treat them like a child of the Gods—which they are.

2. Make conditions so the other person feels cherished.
How do you help a family member or life partner feel cherished? First, you listen to them. Second, you support their hopes and dreams. We look for inspiration in the words of the Goddess:

“For My Law is love unto all beings. Keep pure your highest ideals. Strive ever towards it. Let none stop you or turn you aside.” – The Goddess (in The Charge of the Goddess as written by Doreen Valiente)

A classic scene in old movies is when a gruff father asks a young woman, “Does he make you happy?” He’s talking about a suitor for his beloved daughter.

She replies, “Yes, Daddy.”

Can we really make another person happy?
Maybe not. But we can make conditions, so the other person feels cherished.

Cherished means “protect and care for someone lovingly” (Oxford Languages).

3. Remove obstacles for the person.
Does your loved one have a big dream?
Do you help them have some time to pursue it?
We can do some of the chores to free up their time so they can develop their skills for their dream.
We get inspiration from the words of the Goddess:

“Nor do I demand aught in sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all things, and My love is poured upon the earth.” – The Goddess (in The Charge of the Goddess as written by Doreen Valiente)

4. Ask the Goddess to remove the fog.
Our personal anxiety and worry can be a fog that blinds us to our loved one’s hopes, dreams, and needs.

Life can be so tough. You can ask the Goddess to support you and remove “the fog.”

A Prayer to the Goddess
Dear Lady of the Moon
Lift the fog from my vision.
Strengthen me so I can support my loved one.
May we grow together.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Shift from Worry to Knowing Peace – Ep. 271

How Witches Prevent Fear and Self-Doubt from Strangling Their Spells

My first spells did not go well. What was the problem? Actually, two things. Fear and self-doubt.

I have three insights for you.

1. Fear keeps you on the mountain. Fear empowers you to prepare.

Imagine that you’re going to climb a mountain. What supplies would you bring? Rope, carabiners, and a climbing harness.

The same is true for your magickal practice. You bring supplies. You cast a protective circle around your workspace. Make sure to have all your items before starting. Then, you won’t have to break the Circle once it is cast.

Have a script and things like a fire extinguisher handy in case things don’t go as planned. (I am not kidding.) Be sure that you properly dismiss the elements at the end of your spell.

Your script should also have protection clauses including:

  • An it harm none.
  • For the good of all involved.
  • For this or better.

Being concerned about mistakes invites you to prepare well. That is a good use of fear.

2. Shift from having self-doubt and imagining the worst to a positive intention.

Before you even write your spells, it is good to shift from imagining the worst. You need to keep a positive intention. If you don’t, your spell will likely do a belly flop on you.

It puts doubt into the equation. Instead, keep a positive frame of mind. This helps keep your spells, rituals, and rites on track to good outcomes.

3. Ask the Gods to guide you to the best outcomes.

Here is a prayer you can express to set the appropriate energy.

Mighty Gods,
Keep my intentions positive and good.
Defend me from self-doubt,
So I have a positive turnabout.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Let Go of “One More Thing Will Fix Me” – Ep. 270

How Witches Avoid the Hidden Costs of Their Spells

“What a garbage heap!” my friend Jose’s mother said.

I thought, “That must be hard to take. Imagine living with that. Day after day.”

Then, I realized that his mother had to live with her own daily upset. Nothing was good enough for her. I could only guess that Jose’s grandmother had terrorized his mother, too.

For us, witches, there is an extra cost to having a habit of being angry and of disaproving of so much in life. What is this cost? Our energy is tainted, and our spells are derailed.

I have three insights for you.

1. Keep pure your personal energy.

If you’re constantly annoyed and angry, what does that do to your personal energy? If your personal energy is tainted by annoying parts of your life, imagine what that does to your spells.

We use all the energy around us when we do our spells. But because we focus that energy through our bodies, like a lens, we can warp that pure energy into bad energy.

So how can you keep pure your personal energy?
It’s a process of renewal. Meditation. Walking in nature. Quiet time. Renewing time with friends. Whatever works for you.

You need good energy so you can make a shift out of being irritated.

2. Avoid living in constant disapproval and upheaval.

You probably know someone angry about just about everything. The city government is slow to fill the potholes in the streets. Family members don’t clean up after themselves fast enough. You name it. The person’s face is in a continual frown—as if everything is a personal insult.

Let’s notice that we can taint our spell with negative emotions.

Our own habits of thinking can be a source of upheaval or peace.

Compassion can help. “Oh, my family member was so tired after returning from work,” the person with compassion thinks.

Here’s an added problem of living in constant disapproval…your spells are tainted so they do not turn out the way you want.

3. Ask the Gods to help you accept The Beauty of Enough.”

Many times, I think to myself the ritual went great except for that one detail. Not good enough.

Or I think, “No! I forgot to add _____. The spell could have been more powerful. Stupid.”

I have learned that I must let go of such hyper-critical patterns.

We need to let go of an obsession with “It’s not perfect yet!”

Recently, I have been thinking of “The Beauty of Enough.”

Here is a prayer.

A Prayer

Honorable Lord and Gracious Lady,
Grant me the wisdom of knowing Enough.
Take away the fog of “it’s not perfect”…
Help me daily to experience “The Beauty of Enough.”
And instill Your Passion of Gratitude within my heart.
So Mote It Be.
