How to Face an Opponent (A Witch’s Perspective)

“I can’t believe it. She’s my mother. She’s supposed to be on my side,” my friend, Alicia, said.

I nodded and listened.

Alicia’s mother, at this time, was her opponent.

I have insights for you.

1. Acknowledge the nature of the opponent.

Researchers are noting aspects of narcissists.

“A narcissist is an extremely self-centered person who has an exaggerated sense of self-importance.” – Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Alicia’s mother demonstrates narcissism. Perhaps, you’ve noticed that narcissists do not care, and they do not learn.

What can Alicia do? She can guard her time and her personal energy.

She can set her boundaries. She can, when necessary, end her phone conversations with her mother.

Do you need to set boundaries with an opponent in your life?

    2. Face The Three-fold Law.

The Wiccans I know believe in The Three-fold Law.

This Law holds that what you send out returns upon you with three times the impact.

It is a temptation to want to wield magick to punish the opponent. Whoa! Stop.

Instead, it is better to use prayer, ritual, and meditation to strengthen yourself.

For example, if I faced a truly tough time, I would call upon Fire energy and I would ask the God to give me strength. I would call upon the Goddess to grant me Her Warrior Spirit

What would help you strengthen yourself?

May these insights support your path.

    How Witches Handle Criticism

“Your film doesn’t work. It’s really two different films,” said four people in my friend Sacha’s circle.

“I don’t know what to do,” she told me.

“Do your friends want what’s best for you?” I asked.

“Yes. I trust them. I know them,” Sacha replied.

I realized that the first question about facing criticism is:  “Does the person want good things for you?”

I’ve noticed that some people just can’t handle it if you share a deep part of yourself with them. I felt heartbroken when I shared with one particular friend that I am a witch. As soon as she knew this, she left my life.

A couple of days later, Sacha posted her film on YouTube, despite her friends’ criticism.

Nothing bad happened. Her friends stood by her. And, 200 people saw the film, with no conflicting comments.

Here’s another point about criticism. I realized that people who left my life when they found out I am a witch really did not know what a witch is!

They had unfounded prejudices. So, this second point is: Do not accept criticism from people who do not know what they’re talking about.

I recall that an elder, Don Frew, mentioned: “When someone talks about a witch or pagan, ask them, ‘What do you mean by that label?” That may be an opening for a conversation.

Here is a prayer you can use:

Lord of the Hunt, Lady of the Moon,
Help me deal well with criticism soon.
    Support me in my truth.
    For my divinity is proof.

    So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

How You Can Ease Up on Beating Yourself Up (A Witch’s Perspective)

Photo by Lisa Fotios on Pexels.com

As I settle to sleep, I suddenly remember messing up when talking to a friend.
    “Damn!” I grumble.
    “You okay?” my husband asks.

“I’m all right. Just thinking about something I messed up.”

“You want to talk about it?”
    “Not now,” I say.

Do you emotionally beat yourself up?
I have three insights for you.

    1. Find healthy comfort.

A hug from my husband can help. Or a bite of a chocolate chunky chip cookie. (Okay, I must avoid going to extreme on the cookies!)

      Comfort is not a cop-out.

Comfort is a necessary part of life.

Who or what provides you with some comfort?

      2. Get outside in the breeze and more.

As a witch, you know your kinship with nature.
Don’t hesitate. Get that 15-minute walk next to trees. Feel the breeze. See the sky.
      Connect with nature.
Get out of the box (office).

How can you experience your connection with nature?

      3. Make prayer your ladder upwards.

In the mundane world, we humans have limitations.
      Call for reinforcements!

Here is a prayer you can use.

Gods, shift my mind from self-blaming,
Keep me growing with kindness and self-love.
Lift me up to Your light.
      So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

      Blessed Be,

      How Witches Stop Emotional Pain

“I had to talk to some officials about my father,” my friend, Fred, said. He looked shaken. His elderly father was continuing his violent ways.

“They want me to sign some paperwork. But I don’t know what the hell my father will do next,” Fred continued. Fred’s father had attacked another resident at the facility. The police were called, and Fred’s father had to face a judge. His father was barred from that facility.

Fred was triggered. And why not? His father had physically and emotionally abused Fred as a kid. Until he left home at 17 years old.

      Are you triggered now?

I have three insights for you.

      1. You need steps to handle being triggered.

Every time Fred talks with his father, the conversation goes bad. So, Fred sets up a phone call with a friend to occur immediately after such a conversation. They talk a bit about the call. But better than that, they shift to talking about something good. Fred is able to make a shift in thoughts and emotions.

Do you have a pattern so you can feel better after some triggering situation?

        2. Focus on doing “a shift.”

Sometimes, the way to stop emotional pain is to shift out of a worn pattern. Something triggers a person, and then they go into a negative spiral. Fred calls a friend to do a shift in thoughts and energy. You can also meditate, pray, and/or go for a walk in nature. The idea is that you avoid losing a whole day to feeling bad.

A person can get value by venting during a chosen time. My husband and I take walks together. I remember my husband saying, “I’m going to vent about the problem until we get to that traffic light. Then let’s talk about something else.” That became our signal to do a “shift.”

Do you have a pattern of making a shift?

        3. Consider a “Meditative Walk” to help you release pain.

I have learned to take a certain kind of “meditative walk.” It works better with nearby trees.

As you walk you can say something like:

I thank you my friends, the trees,
I thank you grass and shrubs.
Help me dissipate the negative energy within me.
        Negative energy flows downward.
        Out of my feet.
        Into the ground.
        Into Mother Earth.
        Such energy is now harmless.
        I am clear.
        I am safe.
        So Mote It Be!

May these insights support your journey.

        Blessed Be,
        Moonwater
