What is the Real Gift? (A Witch’s Perspective)

“What was the gift in your brother calling you fat—when you were a little girl?” someone in my circle asked.

“I don’t know … Empathy, maybe,” I said. I know what being ridiculed feels like. I can connect and empathize with others who have had a similar experience.

“For if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.” – the Goddess speaking in The Charge of the Goddess as written by Doreen Valiente

The gift for me may have been that I learned not to rely on human approval.

What do we seek within? It’s the divinity that the God and Goddess placed within you.

I had another thought. Without experiencing my brother’s ridicule, I would not have a certain form of compassion.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup.” – often attributed as a Zen master’s comment

Some authors suggest: “Strength comes from struggle.”

Here’s a prayer you can use:

My Lord and Lady,
May my tough experiences
Transform into compassion and strength.
So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

When Your Thoughts Choke Your Action (A Witch’s Perspective)

“Do I tell him? Will this destroy our relationship before it’s begun?” This thought terrorized me.
How did I get into this mess?

I just had a date with this new guy. This was years ago.
He was doing a video project. It did not look good.

Do I tell him the truth?
Would he want to hear what I perceived?

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Go big or go home.”

If I couldn’t tell him the truth, maybe we wouldn’t be able to have a healthy relationship.

So, did I tell him?

Yes. I was brief. “I don’t think you can make money with this project.” The quality was not good enough.

Over the next couple of days, he surprised me.
He listened. He canceled the project.

It was a hard decision for him. He had to take responsibility for disappointing several people. No one wants to put time and effort into something that gets cancelled.

You may have heard that … many people throw money into something. But they do not quit when logic shows that the project is not working.

By the way, who is this guy?
He’s my husband. We’ve been happily together for more than 25 years.

Oh, I’m so glad he canceled the project. That video project could have wasted a significant amount of time and money.

What do you do when you’re confronted with a big decision?

Do you give in to fear?

Go to the God and the Goddess.

Here is a prayer you can use:

Lord and Lady,
Let me hear the truth through the noise of distraction.
May my supportive intention be felt by this person.
May we grow strong like the mighty oaks.
So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Support So You Rise in Your Practice (A Witch’s Perspective)

When I started in the Craft, I was a teenager.

I felt ugly, fat, and alone. I couldn’t even imagine wielding any power.
My brother continued to call me ugly and fat to my face and his friends.
I wished my parents would corral their precious firstborn.
My mother, in her anger and prejudice, ignored my pain.

Years later, I would suspect my mother had undiagnosed depression. She still won’t see a mental health professional.

Recently, a new thought came to me.

As teenager and a new witch, I was miserable.
What?! Someday, I could effectively move natural energy?

Now, years later, an image arose in my mind.

Think of natural energy as droplets of water.
A witch new to wielding magick may move these droplets of water one at a time.
Through diligent practice of witchcraft, these droplets may unite into a crashing wave.

Then, I thought…

Where would I like the united droplets to flow in my life?
Perhaps they could be a soothing, peaceful lake in my life.

How about you? Where would you like energy to flow in your life?

Here is a prayer you can use:

Lord and Lady,
Water me gently.
My power gathers.
Soak me thoroughly,
And my power grows.
I wield my power in waves,
To capsize sorrow’s boat, so I heal.
So Mote It Be.

Remember: The God and Goddess have placed divinity within you.
It is natural for a witch to move energy.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Honor Your Rhythms (A Witch’s Perspective)

Today, I woke up after sleeping for over 10 hours. That is so unusual for me.
No. I’m not suggesting that we work ourselves to exhaustion.

But this holiday season has seen me go, go, go.
My get up and go, got up and went!
I needed to replenish.

How about you?
Do you work yourself into the ground?
Do you just barrel on through?
Force yourself?
Get pissed off at people next to you?

Someone in my circle works with customers.
He says, “People who come in here are either sick or late or BOTH.”

What happens?
A number of the individuals are rude. Okay. Downright mean.

Wiccans know about the Three-Times Law.
What you put out there returns to you threefold.

Impatient?
Impatience slams you from other people.

Another way exists.

Take care of yourself. Honor your rhythms.
I just saw a comedic film.
I’m renewed.

And, here we have this blog post.

Here’s a prayer you can use.

May I honor my rhythms,
May I honor my inner Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
May each flow from one to another smoothly,
As I so will,
So Mote It Be

P.S. Here is one more idea.
In our life, one day can include all four seasons. You may wake up in Winter.
Cold, stormy, and unpleasant. You might call a friend and then have moments of Spring.
Honor your rhythms.
May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Imagine What the Goddess Would Say (A Witch’s Perspective)

“Do you think Goddess would really say that?” Susan said to Theresa—two acquaintances I know.

I reflected on this.

Do you ever pause and really listen to one of the thoughts that arrive unwelcome in your brain?

Thoughts like:

  • You’re not good enough.
  • You can’t survive now.
  • No one cares about you.

These were the thoughts that Susan was talking about.

Is this what Goddess would tell you?
My heart says, “No.”

Why? Goddess placed divinity within you. You are Her child.

Just in time, my new book, World On Fire: How Witches and Wiccans Transcend the Chaos and Find Their Peace, is available as a paperback book, eBook and an audiobook to provide you with comfort.

Here’s another detail:

Have you heard that researchers point to 15% of men (in the U.S.A.) report having no close friends? That is a fivefold increase from 1990. Back then it was only 3% of men reported having no close friends.

I add this to our conversation because we all need support and even opportunities to be kind. For my readers who are covens, it creates community.

So, let’s practice putting a metaphorical “pause” on the destructive thoughts.

Ask yourself, “What would Goddess say?”

Listen for something positive.
Something supportive.
Something that inspires you to grow and enjoy your spiritual path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How to Communicate Something Tough and Avoid Somebody Shutting Down (a Witch’s Perspective)

“My husband just shuts down,” my friend, Lisa, said. “I can’t get him to correct what he’s doing.”

Later, I had a thought based on some Wiccan and magick ideas.

Here are three insights.

1. Carefully choose words, and you wield energy.

“Magic isn’t the empty parroting of words and actions; it is an involved, emotionally charged experience in which the words and actions are used as focal points or keys to unlock the power that we all possess.” –  Scott Cunningham

You have the power to encourage or shut down a person.

Notice this difference:

  • Option One: “When are you going to listen to me? You just don’t care.”
  • Option Two: “Hey, thanks for clearing the filter for the sink.” (The other person smiles. Then you add something like…) Oh, I had another idea. Is this an okay time to talk “logistics”?

As Scott wrote: “words and actions are used as focal points or keys to unlock the power that we all possess.”

2. You influence certain people in ways more than you know.

If someone cares about you, they’d like to succeed in doing something good for you.

I remember inadvertently overhearing two spouses, “Sam and Janet.”
Sam looked back at Janet to see if Sam’s washing her car had made Janet happier.
No. She just made another request.

Sam did NOT get a moment of success at trying to please her.

It’s about giving your loved one some space to feel good.

In my own life, I need to take care of myself. And that’s tough when I’ve lost sleep. So sometimes, I schedule a nap.

I come back with renewed energy.

My husband and I enjoy a better interaction after that.

“On waking in the morning, try to make your first words pleasant, for this brings good fortune for the entire day.” – Scott Cunningham

3. Ask, in prayer, that the Goddess guide your words

Here is a prayer you can use.

Goddess,
Guide my words that they may comfort others,
Help me hold my tongue when the words are sharp.
Support me to take care of myself, mind and body.
May I be grateful for every blessing.
So Mote It Be

As witches, we notice the value of being flexible like the willow tree. May we meditate, conduct ritual, and pray to maintain our flexibility.

And remember this:

“That perhaps is at the core of Wicca–it is a joyous union with nature. The earth is a manifestation of divine energy. Wicca’s temples are flower-splashed meadows, forests, beaches, and deserts.” – Scott Cunningham

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Choose the Goddess When Moments Are Dark (a Witch’s Perspective)

“How much choice do we have?” my friend, Alex, asked.

“I always go back to what Doreen Valiente wrote in The Wiccan Rede:
An it harm none, do what ye will.” I said.

Later, I reflected on this conversation.

I have two insights about this.

1. “An it harm none” includes you.

Sometimes, we must make the bold choice. Why? Because we might harm ourselves by “not even trying.”
You might try a class. Or ask someone if they’d like to have coffee with you sometime.

Also, we must be careful of addictions.

My sweetheart is addicted to YouTube Shorts with golden retrievers and kittens (Don’t ask.)

So, when he needs more sleep, he promises two friends that he will avoid YouTube Shorts for the day.
Then he avoids harming himself due to lack of sleep.

2. Think about what you really control.

I notice that stoicism emphasizes that we only really control our thoughts and responses.

Many external events, plus the opinions of others, are outside of our control.

“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius

We may not control our first thought.

But our second thought can be towards the Goddess.

You can use a prayer like this:

Goddess,
Show me what I can change,
and help me understand
what is out of my control.
Strengthen my virtue and my heart,
For my love is strong for You.
So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your journey.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Happy Summer Solstice 2025

Happy Solstice!

Litha/Midsummer

The Summer Solstice Litha, also known as Midsummer, represents when the God is at his height in power and fertility. The sun now takes its longest path across the sky, and we experience the longest day of the year. This completes the sun’s waxing cycle and begins the waning part of the solar year. The days become increasingly shorter until the Wheel of the Year returns to Yule, when the days once again wax with the sun. The days grow longer.

Wiccans enjoy collecting and drying herbs during Litha. Many of them take nice walks out in nature to harvest herbs. Herbs harvested during this period have greater magickal powers than herbs gathered at other times of the year. Herbs reach their peak of strength and potency during Litha.

Once again, the bonfire holds a prominent place. The God rises to his peak as his power and strength expands at Litha.

Along the line of a bonfire, when my coven meets for Litha, we do a barbecue. Meat and fire form a good combo for this Sabbat! Yum!

Blessings,

Moonwater SilverClaw

How to Face an Opponent (A Witch’s Perspective)

“I can’t believe it. She’s my mother. She’s supposed to be on my side,” my friend, Alicia, said.

I nodded and listened.

Alicia’s mother, at this time, was her opponent.

I have insights for you.

1. Acknowledge the nature of the opponent.

Researchers are noting aspects of narcissists.

“A narcissist is an extremely self-centered person who has an exaggerated sense of self-importance.” – Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Alicia’s mother demonstrates narcissism. Perhaps, you’ve noticed that narcissists do not care, and they do not learn.

What can Alicia do? She can guard her time and her personal energy.

She can set her boundaries. She can, when necessary, end her phone conversations with her mother.

Do you need to set boundaries with an opponent in your life?

    2. Face The Three-fold Law.

The Wiccans I know believe in The Three-fold Law.

This Law holds that what you send out returns upon you with three times the impact.

It is a temptation to want to wield magick to punish the opponent. Whoa! Stop.

Instead, it is better to use prayer, ritual, and meditation to strengthen yourself.

For example, if I faced a truly tough time, I would call upon Fire energy and I would ask the God to give me strength. I would call upon the Goddess to grant me Her Warrior Spirit

What would help you strengthen yourself?

May these insights support your path.

    Blessed Be,
    Moonwater
