A Brave New Year – The Tarot and Escaping the Comparison Trap – A Witch’s Perspective

A New Year. Thank Goddess! 2024—good riddance. Tough year.
Parents with troubles at the senior facility. (It’s called facility-for-profit!)
My husband’s parents had trouble. Oh, and his mother died. And he got physically attacked at work. Crap year. Bye, 2024.

Hellooooo 2025.
Have you tried New Year’s Resolutions?
No fun? Me, too.

Here are three insights.

1. Envision Your Personal Unique Path for 2025.

“Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.” – The Goddess in The Charge of the Goddess, written by Doreen Valiente

Some of the word pairs in the quote seem to be “opposites.”
Power without compassion can be evil.
    Humor (mirth) and reverence—good stuff.

    Here’s the problem.
Humans seem to be Comparison-making Machines.
We look around to gauge… Am I okay?
Why does that other person get the promotion? (Or to even keep the job?)

Politicians love to say, “Are you doing better now?”
    Compared to what?

Here’s the good news. The God and Goddess put divinity into you.
You are gifted with a personal unique path.

    Let’s escape the Comparison Trap.

Let’s begin with your heart. That’s what counts. (Not what other people are doing in their own lives. Yes, letting go of comparison.)

What does your heart want for 2025?

    2. Arrange your daily life to nurture both the mundane AND the spiritual.

“Live your earthly life fully, but try to see the spiritual aspects of your activities as well.” – Scott Cunningham

How are things going for you?
Are you doing well enough on the mundane level?

There’s an old phrase: “Treat yourself as a good animal.” What’s that? Eat, sleep, and move so that your body is well-supported.

And … treat your spirit well, too.

How? Ritual, meditation, time in nature…

This is part of a process to reconnect with your spiritual essence and the God and Goddess.

People are driven to eat for survival on the mundane level.

However, we need to choose to devote time and effort to experience existence on the spiritual level.

Are you going to be sure to devote time to ritual, meditation, and more – in this New Year 2025?

    3. Ask the Goddess to Guide Your Tarot Process of the “New Year’s 6 Card Spread.”

Recently, I did a “New Year’s 6 Card Spread” for myself.

Here are the elements of the Spread:

1st card: Theme of the New Year 2025

2nd card: Where you are starting from

3rd card: Your path forward to prosperity

4th card: What you need to learn

5th card: Trials along the way

6th card: Things to consider during your journey

Important Facets of the Tarot Process:

    1. It is truly helpful to ground and center. You get in line with yourself before you start the Tarot Process.
    2. Realize that your spread is a “picture” of one moment in time. Just by studying your spread, you are likely moving the pieces of your future. If you see a “warning,” then you can modify your behavior. (This is a reason that doing multiple spreads over time can be helpful. My spiritual elders advise avoiding doing a daily spread on the same question. It can be excessive.)
    3. Realize that an inverted card does not always mean “awful.” It can mean a new angle to the topic.

What is your vision for the New Year 2025?

May these insights support your journey.

    Blessed Be,
    Moonwater

How Witches Use Something Better Than a New Year’s Resolution

Is there something you want to get better in the New Year? Okay. I know. So many things we want to get better.

Have you thought about New Year’s Resolutions? I have something better. This is something that will take away some pressure on you.

Isn’t that what you really need?

So many of us are overwhelmed with so many obligations: being a good parent, an efficient employee, someone with a totally clutter-free living space. It seems like we try to pile on as much as we can.

    Stop.

    Here are three insights:

    1. Realize that “your plate” is finite.

I’m talking about our schedule when we say, “My plate is full.”

A big problem with New Year’s Resolutions is just that, you’re already overcommitted.

So, what happens? You drop the new behavior and fall back into the usual behaviors that you’re used to.

Adding more than we can manage makes us feel under too much pressure. This lowers self-esteem, and some of us even get physically ill.

So, realize that your plate is finite and look to stop adding to your schedule.

“Nor do I demand sacrifice, for behold I am the Mother of All Living, and my love is poured out upon the earth.” From The Charge of the Goddess, written by Doreen Valiente in the voice of the Goddess

The Goddess pours her love on the earth. She does not want you to sacrifice your health and sanity.

Imagine that you can live each day with more moments feeling the Goddess’s love and abundance.

    1. Do not add until you take something off your plate.

If you plan to add a new behavior as a New Year’s Resolution, take something off your plate. This creates space for the New Year’s Resolution, so you stay on track.

I invite you to consider creating a “New Year Stop It” List. Pick something to remove from your daily schedule. This will give you more energy to do the things that are important to you. Give yourself the gift of space.

    1. Ask the Gods, “Do I stop this because I’ve ‘graduated’ or ‘I’m worth it’?”

Sometimes, we “graduate” from a particular situation, and it is time to move on.

I have a friend, Henry, who realized that he had “graduated” from two friends. These so-called friends, as a habit, would tear Henry’s creative ideas down.

Henry realized that he would gain so much space and energy if he would reduce his exposure to these two people.

Ask the God and Goddess to guide you about your next chapter of life.

In a meditation session, you can ask, “God and Goddess, is it time for me to let go of certain people or situations in my life?”

I also mentioned asking the Gods about “Do I stop this because I’m worth it?”

“I’m worth it” relates to “I have value, so I don’t have to endure this, anymore.” Sometimes you need to be like a snake that sheds its old skin to become new again—to have room to grow. The snake leaves the non-useful skin behind it.

Some things you will graduate from. Those things need to be taken off your plate to make room. You will have more opportunities for new lessons and new joyful moments.

May these insights support your life path.

    Blessed Be,
    Moonwater

Wiccans Use Self-care to Enhance Their Lives

    DSC_0252

What do you want? You can discover how Wicca is a powerful tool for transforming your life. It turns out that Wicca and self-care are closely related. Now, we’ll look at modes in which Wicca can help you manifest the best in life:

             1. Body
Wicca teaches us that our body is a temple. Many Wiccans decorate their body-temple with makeup, dyed hair, and tattoos. Still, a vital way to care for our temple is with conscious choices about what we put inside our body.

Think about what you eat, drink and breathe. Many Wiccans avoid taking various drugs because of potential damage to their sacred body.

Related to what we eat, I’m currently being careful about my nutrition. I only eat what comes from the womb and from the ground. That is, I avoid processed foods. In this way, I’ve dropped 17 lbs. of excess body weight. Yes, I’m rather delighted about that!

Eating natural fruits, veggies and proteins keeps your body in good working order.

Making good choices and taking care with what you eat demonstrate love for your body.

Let’s not forget exercise. Make it simple. I walk at least one hour each day. Exercise and good nutrition keep your body tuned and help you build energy for spells.

Taking a simple walk in nature (even a local park) can enhance your health. Being in nature is being in “church” for us, Wiccans. When we surround ourselves with flora and fauna, we experience the heightened presence of the God and Goddess.

             2. Mind
Wiccans care for their mind through meditation. Meditation assists us to practice focus, which is necessary for successful spells. My meditation practice has nurtured my growth in ways that I could not imagine. Meditation even helped me leave an abusive marriage.

Consider adding meditation (even just five minutes a day) to enhance your life.

             3. Spirit
Through taking action to conduct rituals and other Wiccan practices, we evolve spiritually. Doing magick for our own personal change creates transformation within our spirit.

What does taking care of our spirit mean? It means doing actions like meditating, holding circle, and conducting rituals. Then what happens? You become closer to the God and Goddess. You learn the lessons you came here to learn. The God and Goddess can more easily guide you. How? You have lifted yourself up to a higher level through your conscientious efforts with Wiccan practices. God and Goddess can guide us to the answers we seek.

Remember, Wiccan practices are tied with good self-care. As you get stronger and healthier, you also empower yourself as a witch.

    Blessed Be,
    Moonwater

Have the Gods Smile on Your New Year’s Resolution

“Okay, I told you what I’m working on for 2015,” I said. “What’s your plan?”

    “Losing weight,” Sharon replied.

“Isn’t that what you said last year?” I asked.

“Yeah, but I am really going to do it this year,” she insisted.

Do you find yourself making some sort of New Year’s resolution? Or have you given up?

    Consider making a spiritual resolution.

One example would be to dedicate yourself anew to the Gods (see my Simple Wiccan Dedication Ritual).

My own resolution is to meditate more often.

I’m concerned that many of us make resolutions that are too big. Instead, you can identify something small to do. For example, your plan could be: “I will have a piece of fruit instead of a muffin for breakfast each morning.”

The idea is for you to pick something manageable. Avoid some extreme diet.

Use the same pattern for a spiritual resolution.

Some people insist that they will start meditating an hour a day when they haven’t done meditation on any regular schedule.

Instead, pick a manageable goal like: “I’ll meditate for 5 minutes each morning.”

Make it easy to succeed. Start with a baby step. You can always increase the time you meditate once you’ve instilled the new, positive habit.

Less is more. Once you accomplish the daily 5-minute meditations, you experience good feelings of success! You can build on that.

Using the above baby-step approach you will be ahead of all those people who set extreme resolutions and fail.

Instead, you will succeed and improve your Wiccan practice step-by-step. The God and Goddess want you to succeed.

What well-considered New Year’s resolution will you make?

    Blessings,

    Moonwater
