How to Deal with Betrayal when Someone Finds Out You’re Wiccan

“I thought I had a friend,” Julie told me.

“What happened?” I asked.

“I told her that I trust her with something that, in my local community, I have to keep confidential,” Julie began. “I made her promise me—but she told my secret to everybody. And now they shun me!”

“She told them you are Wiccan,” I said, realizing.

Have you had a similar situation in your life? Has someone betrayed you and now you just can’t get the painful thoughts and feelings out? Does it feel like you’re being ripped apart?

To heal after betrayal, we notice a process …

Stages:

  1. Identify the betrayal

The point here is that you need to acknowledge to yourself that you have been wronged. This person made a decision that caused you harm. Before my divorce, I put up with bad actions of my then-husband. Part of gaining the strength to leave him was for me to put my foot down and declare in my own mind: “This is wrong. I will not endure this, anymore.”

  1. Feel the pain

Acknowledge the pain. Feel it. Until you do, you can’t grow and move past it. Additionally, until you feel the pain you might not have the energy to push through and move on. My then-husband would drain our joint account of money to buy his video games and there would be no food in the apartment. He would feed himself with fast food and think nothing of me.

I had to feel the pain and gather my strength to get the hell away from him. (By the way, I’m so glad because after the divorce, I was free to find my soulmate. It’s so much better now.)

Perhaps, you’re like me, and you’d like a break from feeling so much pain. In fact, I had a recent meditation session in which I asked the God and Goddess, “Why do I have to be in such pain?”

Their answer made me pause. They said, “Pain is to grow.”

So, feeling the pain is where growth happens. I know it sucks. But pain is the fuel that creates growth.

  1. Protect yourself from more trouble

This is where you need to cut all contact with the person. You can do the ritual below for this.

Here are the steps of True Separation:

  1. Verbally end the relationship
  2. Stay away from the person.
  3. Ground yourself.
  4. Cast circle.
  5. Do the Separation Ritual (see below).
  6. Do the Cakes and Wine ritual.
  7. Close the circle.
  8. Finally continue to have no contact with the toxic person.

You will need your usual ritual items to cast circle and your altar. As I mentioned you will also have a length of yarn or piece of red string. The yarn/string must be long enough to encircle your own waist and to encircle the object (that represents the toxic person).

The Separation Ritual

Take the object. First, your will asperge it. Asperge means to sprinkle the holy water with your fingers onto the object.

With the holy water, asperge and say:

I cleanse and consecrate you by water and earth.

Next you will cense the object. Cense means to waft incense smoke over the object.

With the incense smoke, cense and say:

I bless and charge you with air and fire.

Then take the string/yarn and cense and asperge it as well and say:

I cleanse and consecrate you by water and earth.
I bless and charge you with air and fire.

Take the red string/yarn in your hands saying:

Tiny bundle of String/yarn
You are now the same as the bonds between me and Name of person.

Tie one end of the string/yarn to the object and then encircle your waist with the other end of the string/yarn, while you say:

You are the bonds that connect us now.

From me to Name of person and from Name of person to me.

Our connection is by thee.

Sit and concentrate on the bond between you both and see it as the string/yarn that now connects you and the object. Once you have a firm connection with that thought, take the boline and cut the string/yarn, seeing in your mind’s eye the astral bonds being cut along with the string/yarn.

Once you complete the cut, say:

I am now free of the ties of Name of person as he/she is of me.

May my happiness expand, and may Name of person’s happiness expand.

Blessed be.

Finish up with the Cakes and Wine part of the ritual and then close the Circle.

  1. Call upon the God and Goddess to assist with your healing

Meditate and pray to the Gods for strength. Here is a prayer you can use.

Heal my heart and mind,
Free me of violence that binds
Keep me safe and sane from [his/her] madness,
Let me stay centered and stay strong as my own badass.
So mote it be!

  1. Circle the Wagons with Friends

Keep your true friends close to you. Confide in them and let them build you back up.

  1. Move into Inner Peace

Now that you are centered and have had your friends strengthen you, you can now move into peace. You now know that you have separated yourself from the betrayer, and you have surrounded yourself with the love of your true friends and the God and Goddess.

Keep in mind there is a difference between acceptance and approval. You do not approve of the betrayer’s actions. Eventually, you might get to the point of acceptance. What would you be accepting? You would accept that the person was caught up in their own crap, and you weren’t even a fly on their windshield. We notice that people can be seriously self-centered and cruel.

But acceptance is not approval. Acceptance is realizing that you went through an event, and today you are not ruled by it.

May this material support you and bring you peace.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How do I tell my mainly Christian friends/family I’m Wiccan?

Are you considering the question of whether to go public with your Pagan faith?

Recently, one of my readers asked: “How do I tell my mainly Christian friends/family I’m Wiccan?”

“That’s a vital and complicated topic,” I thought. “Can I answer this in a brief article or would this be something to cover in half a book?”

Here’s my answer to my reader:

Are you sure you need to go public with your Wiccan faith? Many Wiccans stay in the broom closet and are just happy with that. They have real and intense reasons to keep their faith private.

I have deep empathy for your situation—my own parents dragged my brother and me to their Christian church in our early years.

It’s important to consider many issues before you do something that is irreversible.

1) You will lose some people.

Many Christians have been told by their religion-leaders that Wicca is evil. So, these Christians feel terror about Wicca. Doesn’t it make sense that several people may react poorly to you telling them you have different beliefs than they do? You may be shunned—for a lifetime. Are you willing to lose some friends and family?

2) Are you ready to go public?

For many Wiccans, the cost of going public has been to lose their jobs and other opportunities because of their beliefs.

In this day of social media, several authors suggest: “There is no privacy.”

Many of us have stories about how someone said, “I’ll keep your secret,” but later that person blurted out one’s private information. How do you feel about the whole online world knowing that you are Wiccan?

3) Are you okay with the possible backlash?

Remember, many Christians have been misinformed about Wicca. Those individuals consider Wicca to be evil. How do some people treat those they consider evil? Have you seen the consequences of those who think they are righteous and they’re only “punishing” evil-doers? People who are afraid tend to react in a rash manner.

After due consideration … here are some methods to express one’s Wiccan faith publicly.

a) Let the other person start the conversation

I always wear a pentacle necklace. When some people see it, they make a comment. This opens the door for me to explain what the pentacle means. In this way, I’m able to share some of my beliefs and let them know some facts about the Wiccan spiritual path. (Warning: It depends on where you live. Since many Christians believe Wicca to be evil, you might open yourself to violence if you openly wear a pentacle. Please know that I live in Northern California where such an occurrence is unlikely.)

b) Start with common ground

“Margaret, I noticed that you’re concerned about taking care of the environment,” Amanda said. This is an example of starting with common ground. You can talk about how you also have a deep appreciation for nature. You can mention that walking in nature is like going to a sacred place for you. Some Wiccans mention that they have a “nature-focused religion.”

Some people who believe in one God say that they have a feeling of awe when they see the Grand Canyon or a waterfall. The feeling of awe in the presence of nature can be common ground.

c) Talk about “The All” if that is part of your Wiccan Faith

Some Wiccans believe that “The All” began the universe. Then The All manifested as the Goddess who gave birth to the God … and so forth.

A Christian might be able to understand “The All” as approximating what they view as “God, the Father.”

d) Show Your Wiccan Faith in Action

Take up an environmental cause—if that fits for you. Here are options: Do cleanups in your neighborhood and demonstrate the positive things about your beliefs. Volunteer at an animal shelter, or perform some other charitable work. In these ways, you demonstrate the life-enhancing actions that you do, inspired by your Wiccan faith.

Please do a lot of reflection. Get some advice from people you trust. Practice the actual words you will use for your tough conversations about your Wiccan faith … if you decide to cross this irreversible threshold.

Wiccans Dealing with Prejudice

peace
Thank you to the contributors of this image.

“How do I become less prejudiced?” one of my readers asked.

That’s a powerful question.

As I was thinking about replying to the reader, I had some conversations with my sweetheart; he is a person of color. He noted, “Many of us feel that we’re free of prejudice. But if you observe closely: A person who intellectually tries to be free of prejudice can still exhibit a physical ‘flinch.’ A big flinch can be when an older woman pulls her purse closer to herself when a person of a different race sits in an adjoining chair. A smaller flinch can be when a person’s face shows a wince when that person sees two people of a different race approach.”

I have a number of friends who consider themselves to be free of prejudice. Still, when certain topics come up they become angry, and they have a lot of judgments and grievances against certain individuals.

“It’s hard to be tolerant of people who are not tolerant of you.” – Marianne Williamson

We, Wiccans, find that we face intolerance from people who have been told by their religious leaders that witches are less than (or worse) than others. I admit it. In the past when someone has spouted off about witches and said truly ignorant things, I had some judgments about that person.

As Wiccans, we work with the Shadow-Self (the dark side of oneself that one does NOT want to look at). We can bring light to the Shadow-Self, and I’m going to share Three Steps to Free Yourself of Prejudice.

“It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

The following Three Steps help you shine light on the Shadow-Self, understand yourself a bit more, and, perhaps, change in positive ways.

Three Steps to Free Yourself of Prejudice

           1. Have good experiences with people who are different from you.

Many times, our prejudices manifest because of having bad experiences or just hearing about bad experiences. Often, people form prejudices when they have had NO experiences with other people who seem so different.

Many Wiccans complain about those people who show contempt for witches without knowing what Wicca really is.

We, Wiccans, can stretch and make a neutral space so we can learn about those people who seem so different from us.

The question is: How does one have good experiences with people unlike ourselves?

Perhaps, you might get involved with a group centered on one of your interests. You might strike up a casual conversation with another group member who seems different from you. Many of us find that it helps when we get out and learn about other cultures/creeds/orientations for ourselves. We learn to avoid letting stereotypes box in our thoughts and feelings.

           2. Begin genuine friendships with people different from you.

I have a Caucasian friend who grew up in the South (in a southern state of the USA).

It bothered her that she grew up surrounded by certain Caucasian individuals who daily spouted disparaging remarks about African Americans.

My friend took action. She joined the NAACP; she was often the only Caucasian person in the room. She later moved to California, and continued developing more friendships with African American people. She says, “People are people.”

Getting to know people is a good start. This will give you a deeper appreciation for others with differences.

           3. Study another culture’s positive aspects and let go of stereotypes.

It is sometimes amazing how fast people are quick to judge on little fragments of information. One of my friends told me about how some workaholics deride cultures that have an afternoon siesta. Then, this friend worked in a particular bank that had a lounge area where employees could take a nap during their noon break. These employees came back to work with more energy. They proved to be more productive.

Here’s the point. One can look into the history of the siesta. It’s reported that the siesta began as a way to help people in a hot climate avoid two hours of the hottest weather. This was a wise practice to protect the health of local people. Additionally, it was a way to reclaim energy before one went back to work.

So, it’s true that if one knows more, one may avoid being quick to judge.

In summary, you can use the above Three Steps to help free yourself of negative prejudicial thoughts.

Still, the real solution can be found in my friend’s example. She went out of her way to have friends of a different racial background.

So, I invite you to be a candle in the darkness.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How To Walk the Wiccan Path and Deal with a Family Member’s Discomfort

Shhhhh. . .
Shhhhh. . .

How To Walk the Wiccan Path and Deal with a Family Members Discomfort

Do your friends know you’re Wiccan? How about your family?

Do you have to keep your beliefs a secret at your workplace?

I am fairly open about my practicing Wicca.

Unfortunately, I do have a family member who suggests that I keep a low profile when I attend a work-related event with him. He works in an industry that includes people who speak out a lot about their Christianity. So I turn my talisman with a pentacle around when I’m at a work-related event with him.

Many times I have argued that this form of “hiding” impinges on my freedom as a witch.

At one point, we had one of his friends, a born-again Christian visit, and we kept the door to the room with my shrine closed.

All other times, I wear my pentacle jewelry with pride and talk openly about my beliefs.

I observe that, in America, one does business with a significant number of people who profess that they are Christian and that they hold conservative beliefs.

When I’m in a business situation with my family member, I honor his situation. I am NOT dishonoring the Gods by turning my talisman around, and I am honoring my family member’s concerns.

I am still a witch. Now if someone asks me about it, I will tell them the truth. I am a Wiccan High Priestess. I will not cower in the corner, but that hasn’t happened yet during my family member’s work-related events. I still wear my pentacle; I just do it incognito.

As a matter of fact, I always wear my pentacle. It brings me comfort, and I feel it gives me protection.

Those individuals who are Anti-Wiccan appear to be ignorant (definition: lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated in the subject at hand) about Wicca.

It bothers me when a person chooses not to learn, then the situation may become dangerous. When does the price of silence become too much to bear?

At present, we’re at a junction.

First, it is a blessing that many of our predecessors have hacked a path in the wilderness of fear and ignorance that other people have about Wicca. When a significant number of Wiccans openly express the beauty of Wicca, more people in this world start to appreciate who we Wiccans really are.

Fostering this appreciation is one of the reasons that I write this blog.

At this time, I have found my own path. I stand ready to share Wicca with others. And still at my family member’s work-related event, I do not broadcast my beliefs (I keep my talisman turned around).

As I continue to write this blog and my books, I’m encouraged to see other Wiccans continuing to have a positive influence in the world. May we all continue to express the beauty of Wicca.

Now, I invite you to share with us. Have you faced opposition in some form of conservative community? How do you deal with the situation?

Blessings,

Moonwater SilverClaw

Wiccans Handle Stress and Prejudice

Bring Peace to Yourself
Bring Peace to Yourself

How Wiccans Can Handle Stress and Prejudice

We all deal with stress in our lives. However, members of a minority religion face additional stressors. Many Wiccans and Pagans in general have experienced some form of prejudice and some have even been the victims of hate crimes. These and other terrible acts upon us can really take a toll.

Although I am fortunate to live in the San Francisco Bay Area where there is more acceptance of people with differences, I have still faced prejudice. I have lost friendships and suffered the actions of intolerant people.

So how can we combat the stresses of such actions?

First, assess the situation. Can you educate the offending person? I have been in situations when the offending person thinks he’s right and will hear nothing that differs from his beliefs.

Make sure no one is being harmed. There is a big difference between offensive words and physical violence. One may need to take action. Maybe you need to quickly get to a place of safety. One might even have to call 911 for police intervention.

Take care of your own feelings. Before I get caught up in an aggression tornado, I remember to simply breathe. Concentrating on your breath is a great way to help yourself calm down. Then you can take control of the words that come out of your mouth. You can’t control what they say, but you can control what you say and do.

Find your way to compassion. The Gods and Goddesses love their children (all of them) so become the Goddess in her nurturing state. Let her energy flow within you. Let the Goddess help you select your words. Avoid words that sting, instead say something constructive and nurturing to the conversation. How would this sound? One way to respond is: “I heard what you said. That’s not what my life is about. I’m leaving this room.”

When I say compassion, I do not mean let them walk all over you. The idea is to make space in yourself to understand those who are ignorant of your beliefs. They don’t know what they are talking about. To take their words personally gives them power. Do not let that happen. Do not give these untruths any power.

Renew yourself. Once the incident is over, take some time to do a Breathing Meditation. I know how much it helps as a salve to the wounds their words have left.

Find a quiet place where you know you will not be disturbed. Silence your cell phone or home phone. Get comfortable and relax. You can burn some of your favorite incense and light a candle. I find dimming the lights to be helpful.

Here is the process:

As you relax, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Breathing in and out deeply, envision a beautiful white light shinning down and surrounding you. Next, deeply breathe in that light, pulling in the beautiful cleansing properties of it. Hold this breath for the count of three.

When you breathe out, picture a black smoke made of those toxic words, actions and emotions. You expel the black smoke from your body. Imagine the black smoke absorbed and purified by the light around you. After your exhalation, hold your breath for a count of three. This is where you acknowledge the transformation of energy.

Continue this process until you feel you have expelled all of the negative comments/feelings/energies that were placed upon you. Finish this meditation by thanking the Gods for their shinning light.

May this meditation renew you and free you of any negative effects created by prejudice.

Once free of toxins, you can experience the blessings of life with the Gods and Goddesses.

Blessings,

Moonwater
