How Witches Avoid Screwing Up Their Magick

When was the last time you were angry? I mean, really angry.

Drivers that almost cause accidents. That’s a hot button for me.

Injury or death. For no reason—except the troublesome driver is unskillful or rude—or both.

So, I was simply driving. Then an idiot driver cut me off. Causing Danger. Now I’m tossed into a “hot state.”

A definition: “Hot states are characterized by high levels of emotion, where individuals are more likely to act impulsively and make decisions based on their immediate feelings rather than long-term consequences.”

Warning: Do not do magick when stuck in a hot state. You can make rash decisions that you normally wouldn’t make.

Here are hot state triggers: anger, hunger, fear, pain, sexual arousal, and strong cravings.

Here’s the Big, Important Idea: When you notice that you are triggered, stop. Cool down. Make a good decision to wait before you do any form of magick.

Also, remember the Threefold Law. If you do magick while you’re angry, you could cause damage … that could be slammed back at you with three times the intensity or more.

Here’s a chant you can use to cool down. You can replace “anger” with any other unhelpful emotion.

Anger, anger, flee from me!
Clear my mind for me to see.
Unhelpful emotions fade away,
You don’t trouble me today.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Fill an Inner Need

At night, I cannot eat enough. What?

Have you had this experience? You eat something—something good like a dessert.

Then it’s chips.
Soda.
Cookies.
Cashews.
Peanut butter M&Ms.

(Not you? Am I alone here?)

Recently, I said, “You can’t satisfy an inner need with outer stuff.”

(But I’m willing to try.)

I have three insights for you.

1. What is your inner need?

    Some researchers suggest that we are 95% motivated by things in our subconscious mind.

    So how do you make the subconscious stuff visible to your conscious mind?

    You can meditate and ask the Gods about some of the driving factors.

    But, one of the most important things is to observe your actions.  

    Ever open a cupboard door looking for something to eat?

    You know that hunger—that no matter how much you eat—is never satisfied? Just close that cupboard door.

    It’s Halloween time in the United States. Or for us witches Samhain.
    How do you feel when you see the green-skinned, cackling caricature of a “so-called witch”?

    What does this cackling, green caricature need? Popcorn?

    Chocolate? Definitely chocolate.

    Let’s pull back. Away from that… What could be the inner need?

    Wanting comfort.

    So, how would you like to be comforted?

    (I do rely on my coffee in the morning…)

    2. Step on the path of “centered and whole.”

    Have you attended a ritual with other witches and felt at home?

    Or…

    You’re a solitary witch and your personal ritual came together well. You felt calm, but also invigorated!

    To get to “centered and whole” you need to push away distractions.

    So, what is distracting you?

    3. Ask the Goddess for clarity in the face of distractions.

    To me, cookies, pastries, and other treats are a plea for comfort. What about you?

    Here is a prayer you can use.

    Goddess, clear my mind,
    Free me from the mud of distracting thoughts and feelings.
    Flush me clean with the spring waters of Your love.
    Hold me close with Your arms around me.
    So Mote It Be.

    How Witches Experience the “Beneficial Paradox”

    Have you noticed that meditation and rituals give you peace, clarity and closeness with the Gods?

    Recently, I realized that there are times when peace and clarity can be opposed to each other.

    Perhaps, you’re like me, and you would like to experience more moments of peace each day. I experience peace as moments in which I’m free of self-deprecating thoughts that cause me pain.

    However, I’ve experienced moments of clarity that actually bothered me.

    When you have clarity, you can feel uneasy. For example, Janet did a Tarot reading and a ritual about her job. She received clarity… that she was in the wrong job. She felt a stirring of anxiety. It felt like the opposite of peace.

    In a conversation with a friend, the phrase “Beneficial Paradox” arose about this relationship between peace and clarity. We need both.

    What’s the solution to the Beneficial Paradox of Peace versus Clarity?

    I’ve found a solution in talking to the Gods during a meditation session. This can create a certain closeness you can’t get with other people. With this close relationship, the Gods can guide you to clarity as well.

    Clarity can save your life.

    Some years ago, I stopped for a red light at an intersection.

    The light turned green, but I heard guidance from the Gods in the form of “Don’t go!”

    So, I hesitated.

    Another car raced through the intersection, and it would have crashed into my car if I had driven forward.

    Meditation and ritual can condition you to receive guidance more often.

    One more point: Sometimes the Gods give you clarity, but you don’t want to accept it yet. I’ve used this comment: “Sometimes, you get ‘Goddess-slapped’ upside your head.” This means that Goddess shakes you up. It helps to stay open and receive guidance.
