How Witches Create Magick — When There’s No Fortune in Their Fortune Cookie

Oww! It felt like a loss. My fortune cookie was empty. I found no slip of paper that promised, “Your dream will definitely come true.”

Damn.

Now what?

I have three insights for you.

1. Write your own fortune.

I wrote my own fortune: “The Gods give us a great fortune including a great car.”
That’s right. My husband and I need a replacement car.

I suggest that you write your own fortune. When you write that fortune, it’s like composing a simple magickal spell.

So, what “fortune” do you want?

2. Realize that you’re a co-creator with the universe.

Does the God and Goddess give you good fortune? Yes. And, you need to take action, too.

“All acts of love and pleasure are My rituals. Therefore, let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.” ― The Goddess in The Charge of the Goddess, written by Doreen Valiente

What action do you need to take to move your life forward? What can make your life better?

3. Ask the Goddess for good fortune.

Here is a prayer you can use.

Goddess,
Guide me to my healthy desires.
Help me fulfill my destiny,
Open the doors to good fortune for me.
So Mote it be.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How Witches Escape Self-Hatred

I couldn’t breathe. I swallowed swimming pool water. My 10-year-old brother kept his feet on top of me. I was 6 years old and terrified.

What could a 10-year-old boy feel that he wanted to terrorize his little sister?

Recently, I realized that the people I grew up around used judgments like knives to cut me.
You get cut enough, and you bleed out.
Also, you get cut enough—you internalize those shards of glass made of judgments against yourself.

Some people talk about a committee of voices in your head. Many of the voices hate you. What happens? Much of that can turn into self-hatred.

I have three insights for you.

1. Survive when you compartmentalize.

Sometimes, to function, I need to put certain thoughts off to the side. For example, I’ll recall something I said that embarrassed me. If I allow this one negative thought to overrun my life, I won’t get to the facility where my parents live. And I won’t get my mom to her doctor appointment on time.

I will not let that happen. I do what I must.

Do you find yourself doing that, too? Do you compartmentalize sometimes?

Compartmentalizing is only a temporary tactic. I find that I must talk through what bothers me with someone I trust. … when appropriate.

My audio books now available on Audible.com

2. Proclaim: “I interrupt this broadcast” and stamp your foot.

Recently, a friend told me about a method that works for several people. When you think of a disempowering thought, you stamp your foot and say, “I interrupt this broadcast.” You are interrupting the thought that showed up in your brain.

You do a physical action to disrupt the trance of negative thinking. Dealing with my depression symptoms, I realize that using a positive disruptive pattern helps me shift my focus.

Here is an example. I think, “Damn. I shouldn’t have said, ‘I can’t do that.’”
Then I say, “I interrupt this broadcast.” I stamp my foot on the ground.
(This shifts my focus.)

Do you need to shift your focus from habitual negative thinking?

3. Ask the Goddess to help you shift your focus.

Here is a prayer you can use.

Goddess,
Help me shift my focus
From helpless to helpful,
From self-anger to self-love.
From fearful to fearless!
So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How Witches Elevate Their Experience of Gratitude

When I first felt the presence of the God, time stopped.
I felt different. Empowered. With a whole new peaceful experience.

I was grateful.

As we get near the time of Mabon, it’s valuable to talk about gratitude.

Here are three insights.

1. Set a Morning Intention of Gratitude

My friend, Stephanie, sets an intention at night. “I am grateful, full of energy, and filled with peace.”

Then, when she wakes up, her first thought is her intention. After months of practice, this uplifting intention is a morning “reflex” for her.

What intention would empower you in the morning?

2. Transform your suffering into a gift.

At one point, my spleen was destroying my platelets. (In your blood, the platelet creates blood clots so you do not bleed out.) I found myself truly miserable for 30 days in a hospital. The solution? They removed my spleen. I’m grateful to be alive.

My husband was terrified. He did not want to show any uncertainty on his face. He wanted it to look like he had full confidence in the anesthesiologist and the surgeon. He wanted me to be in a strong, positive mental mindset of certainty. So, I would be sure to come out of surgery well and strong.

Yeah. Well. I thought it looked like he did not care. (That was such a wrong assumption!) He had so much fear in him. But I couldn’t see any concern on his face. I felt sad.

My husband said, “As soon as the doors closed, tears ran down my face. I was terrified.”

I later said to my husband, “Show me your tears!”

So, I suffered. My husband suffered. How the heck is there a gift in any of this? I am alive. I am healthy. My husband and I are still on this planet together. 25 years. I am very grateful.

Also, he has learned an important lesson. “Show me your tears!”

Has a moment of suffering later helped you learn a valuable lesson?

3. Ask the Goddess for help to shift to gratitude.

Here is a prayer you can use.

O Lord and Lady,
Help me see my gifts and blessings.
Shift my thoughts from fear
To gratitude.

So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How Witches Identify and Fulfill Their Soulful Need

“When have you felt happy?”
“I don’t like that question,” I thought.
Why do I have a problem with that question?
Let’s pause.
Do you clearly know what makes you happy? Are you getting it? Have you settled? Or given up?
Maybe, you’re similar to me. You just feel tired.
My cat just leaped into my lap. I’m hugging him. Okay, I’m feeling happy.
But that’s not the whole story.
For one thing, he just shoved his tail into my face. I sneeze.

I have three insights for you.

1. Shift from What can I get? to Why am I here?

“What can I get?” is often connected to survival mode. Have you noticed that kids sense the competition that’s going on?

You have to push to get what you want.
It can feel exhausting.

In 2012, I received from the God and Goddess the directive “start a blog.” What? With my dyslexia?
I started the blog anyway. I get a lot of help.
But at the beginning, I did not know how things would go.
Recently, I’m thinking about “Why am I here?”
My thoughts include: “I’m here to support others in their learning and their individual path.”
Some of my favorite moments with my blog posts and podcast episodes include:

  1. I appreciate hearing from readers.
  2. I like discovering new topics and ways to synergize ideas and learnings.
  3. I like editing my podcast episodes. I like the moments when an interesting assembly happens. For example, I’ll assemble the first part of one sentence and then use part of my second take to make things sound right.

When I’m doing my blog posts and podcast episodes, I feel connected to “Why am I here?”
How about you? When do you feel on purpose? This is part of your Soulful Need.

2. Sometimes, your Soulful Need is connected to release from something that shackles you.

At times, fear shackles me.
I find that I feel free of fear when I am doing my blog and podcast work, and I have a team member supporting me. So, my experience of freedom from fear is connected to “taking action while receiving support.” That’s a true revelation for me.

What do you need a release from?

Old ideas? Thoughts of limitation? An old identity? (For example, family members can try to hold someone as cemented to an old role of “the shy one.” … The truth is: You can be shy and still be an actor. I know someone like that.)

3. Have you given up a “positive expectation”?

I went to college because I wanted to be an animator using a computer. You know, someone who works at Pixar.
I am working with someone now so I can do some animated characters. (Groundwork is happening for that.)

I have not given up on the possibilities of animating material.
Have you become so tired that you have given up on having any “positive expectations”?
Your Soulful Need can arise as you answer questions like:

  • What would feel delightful?
  • What might cause me to stretch and grow?
  • What could be a positive possibility for me?

Your Soulful Need is connected to the divinity the God and Goddess placed within you.

Here is a prayer you can use:

God and Goddess,
Lead me to delightful discoveries.
Help me fulfill my Soulful Need with ease.
Show me the way to untold possibilities.
So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How Witches Deal with Loneliness

“Are you lonely?” I asked Rene, someone in my circle.

“What? Me? No, I’m all right,” she replied quickly.

She did not seem all right.

Some definitions of loneliness include: A state of mind in which the person feels “empty, alone, and unwanted.” (noted at verywellmind . com)

Let’s face this together. We, witches, can feel lonely because certain spiritual paths openly discriminate against us.

How can you strengthen yourself and rise out of loneliness?

Here are three insights:

1. Call out the idea of “being broken.”

Has this happened to you? You felt broken in some way, and you had no energy to interact with anyone…?

I have had this for many days, due to my depression symptoms. I just want to lay in bed all day and do nothing but sleep and weep.

But what I really need to do is get my butt out of bed and do stuff. Even though I don’t feel like it.

By doing something that fulfills one of my responsibilities (caring for my elderly parents and their medical appointments), I build myself up. How? I have evidence that I am taking action. I am doing good things. I am capable and worthy.

My depression symptoms call me “broken.” But my actions show evidence that I am capable.

2. Make your healing independent of another human’s approval.

I do many things to heal without others’ interference or approval. I brew Mead and wine. I knit and make soap from scratch. I also like to bake. All of these things I do for me.

Yes, it’s nice to share my art with others. I enjoy giving my works to people to appreciate. But that is independent of why I do what I do.

To me making a good brew or bars of soap is good healing. What am I healing? I am rising from the pain caused by my depression symptoms to create my art.

I like the process of creating things. I enjoy the end products, too.

I make sure to take walks and do a bit of weight training.

Are you doing something for your health and peace of mind?

3. Ask the Goddess for support for your new “first step” actions.

To alleviate loneliness, one often needs to take certain steps forward. Perhaps, you decide to attend an in-person workshop. If you’re an introvert, you may need to practice asking some questions.

Rehearsing for talking with new people takes energy.

Consider praying to the Goddess for support and new energy.

A Prayer:

Lovely Lady,
Bless me with your support for good healing.
Fill me with empowering energy.
Guide me to prepare to meet new people.
Support me as I talk with people
So, I have the energy to truly listen.
May You light my way in the darkness.
So that I may create connections and friendships.
So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your journey.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Beltane 2024

Sunflowers

Sunflowers

Happy Beltane to all! May you be blessed with the season’s energies.

Beltane

To our ancestors, Beltane celebrates the beginning of summer. Bale or “bon” fires are an important part of the Beltane Sabbat. All fires at home or in shops were extinguished and then re-lit from the sacred bonfires that blazed on the tops of the surrounding hills. This was also the time when the herds were blessed. The people marched their cattle around and between the bonfires to bring good luck and fertility and to protect them during the year.

The Sabbat Beltane, coincides with when the God actually impregnates the Goddess. This sacred act ensures the continued fertility for crops and animals throughout the light half of the year (between the Spring and Fall Equinoxes.)  A popular symbol for this sacred act, the May Pole represents the impregnation of the goddess. A May Pole is a pole set erect in the ground with ribbons attached on the top. People then each take a ribbon and dance in a weaving pattern around the pole. The pole represents God’s phallus and the colorful ribbons that the dancers wind around the May Pole represent the goddess with her flowers a-blooming. And so the impregnation of the Goddess is fulfilled.

Blessed be,

Happy Ostara 2024

Spring Arrives with Ostara

Spring Arrives with Ostara

Happy Ostara from all of us at GoddessHasYourBack.com and we wish you and all your kin a great sabbat.

Ostara

Ostara happens at the Spring (Vernal) Equinox. The days become equal to the night, and the light finally overcomes the darkness of winter. Ostara’s theme is fertility. The God courts the Goddess and their sexual energies of desire flow over the Earth, leading to a burst of new life and growth upon the land by the plants and the animals. Here the courting God and Goddess’s desire to mate drive the Earth and its inhabitants to mate and bring new life to the land.

The Teutonic goddess of spring, Easter brings her symbol of the egg and her patron animal, the rabbit. Wiccans celebrate Easter during the Ostara Sabbat. The Christain Church tried to stamp out celebrations of Easter and her symbols of fertility (the egg and the rabbit), but they had become too deeply embedded in the people’s hearts. Christians got their Easter eggs and rabbits from this Goddess. How many Christians know that when they celebrate Easter, they’re using a term originated by Pagans?

Generally, eggs are a popular representation of fertility and new life. Early Wiccans revered the “cosmic egg,” as many refer to it, for the secrets it held; it contained and produced life. It looked like a stone but held life within.

Wiccan activities on Ostara include coloring eggs and decorating them with fertility symbols, and then hiding them for children to find.

Blessed be,

Moonwater SilverClaw

How Witches Open the Door to a Higher Level of Practice

“What makes a real difference?” I asked in a conversation with a spiritual elder.

One word arose: “Listening.”

I realized that listening actually moves us, witches, to a higher level of practice.

Here are three insights.

  1. Listen to what people near you are truly saying.

Someone tried to give me advice that I didn’t ask for. I disagreed with their assessment. But I listened to their words, ideas, and emotion.

My point is that listening, in this situation, does not mean agreement. You do not need to follow another person’s advice.

It’s more like a friend saying, “You might want to take a look at this.”

If you disagree with someone, it doesn’t mean that they are completely wrong.

Listening is a skill. And just like magick, you need to practice it to get better.

Here is an example of listening. A family member has a process. When someone says something that he does not relate to immediately, he says, “I’ll stir that in my soup.” He means that he will give the idea some thought and time. He is free to change his perception or approach later.

The effective witch listens to conversations because clues for uplifting your life can show up in such conversations.

  1. Listen to the God and Goddess

“And ye shall be free from slavery….Let my worship be within the heart that rejoiceth, for behold: all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you.” – The Goddess speaking in The Charge of the Goddess, written by Doreen Valiente

When listening to the God and Goddess, practice quieting your mind. A practice of meditation and prayer can help you.

We can look on being caught in negative thinking as a form of slavery. It helps to practice your own methods to shift out of negative thought patterns. Someone I know places her hand on her heart and tells herself: “I’m okay. I’m safe. I’m loved. God and Goddess love me.” She tells me that this helps her shift out of fearful thoughts. In a quieter state of mind, she talks with the God and Goddess.

  1. Pay attention for the “Signs”

We can become good at spotting the signs from the Gods. Signs can come in many forms from unexpected appearances of certain animals to something that will make you stop and think. For example, many witches consider seeing an image of a white heron or the actual bird as a sign of the Goddess. It is a positive sign.

“I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart.” – The Goddess speaking in The Charge of the Goddess, written by Doreen Valiente

When you receive a positive sign, devote some time to think about it and meditate on it. Watch for any further signs.

May these insights support your path.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

How Witches Feel Stronger in the Goddess’s Presence

“Are you okay, Moonwater?” my friend, Sandra, asked me.

“There are great things. And other things, I’m coping with,” I said, truthfully.

My mother’s health collapsed. I’ve been at her side around the clock—in the emergency room, then in the hospital room and now at the apartment. We’re getting some help with a nurse sometimes visiting the home.

The pressure is so intense.

I realized that I need to lean on two ideas.

  1. Acknowledge the good you are doing.

“Focus on ‘Better than zero.’” – Tom Marcoux

I’m being buried in thoughts that I’m not doing enough for my mother. I feel that I’m not the ideal daughter. Then I take a breath and think about the idea, “Better than zero.” For me, I’m doing my best. I’m helping with her meds and helping her walk with a walker. When I feel like I should be doing more than what I can handle, I remember “Better than Zero.”

How can you fit the idea of Better than zero in your life?

  1. Realize the Goddess’s Presence.

“I have been with thee from the beginning.” – the Goddess, as noted in the writings of Doreen Valiente

The Goddess is always with us. Even with me at this time of distress. So, I can draw strength from Her. And I do.

Just asking the Goddess to guide me and support me makes me feel better. She gives me more energy when I feel I have given it all.

I just concentrate on the Goddess and say a silent prayer to Her. Usually, I feel a gentle energy around me. I can draw energy, compassion, and love from Her. Then I can continue my work to help my Mom.

How will you call upon the Goddess’s support?

May these ideas support your journey.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater
