How Witches Elevate Their Self-Respect

What are you waiting for?

For years, I waited for some feeling of calm, confidence, and self-acceptance.

Can you relate to that?

“To think that we will wait for another life
To drink the wine from the horns and leap the fire.” – from Elegy for a Dead Witch by Doreen Valiente

During Beltane, one leaps the fire to inspire fertility, purification, and protection.

Do you feel you are a person who deserves purification and protection?

I ask this because self-respect is important to me. Why? My own depression symptoms put me down daily. I continue to learn how to support my own self-respect.

Here are three insights.

  1. Learn the value of self-respect

Have you felt the pressure that exists because many societies slam scorn upon us witches?

Self-respect is essential to each of us as individuals.

The definition of self-respect is –

“Pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity.” — from Oxford Languages

Realize that the God and Goddess are in you. In having divinity within, you deserve to feel the positive energy of honor and dignity.

What happens when you operate from a foundation of self-respect? You create positive experiences in your life. You let go of unnecessary stress. You move with the energy of kindness and strength.

  1. Ask yourself “Is this how I would treat my good friend?”

Do you find that you constantly berate yourself?

What does that create?

Do you feel exhausted?

More than that, notice what a terrible habit berating is.

Would your best friend put up with that?

Again, remember we are one with the Gods. Treat yourself like the God/Goddess you are.

At least, treat yourself with the kindness and support you show to a good friend.

Why? You need positive energy to be good to others. Plus, when you are kind to yourself, you have the strength to “do no harm.”

  1. Ask for the Goddess’s guidance to get your past stuck points.

Are you stuck? Do you fail to see the goodness that you contribute daily?

Were you taught to treat yourself in a shabby manner?

If you are having a hard time, you are not alone. Many people struggle with this.

Realize your loving Goddess stands by, fully willing to help you heal and move forward. Goddess will give you guidance and help you see who you truly are. Through prayer, meditation, and ritual, experience the Goddess celebrating the divinity within you—that She put there!

How Witches Feel Better with Celebration

“How does it feel to have recorded your 200th podcast episode?” my friend, Kelsey, asked me.

I feel excited because I am grateful to my listeners who support me and my podcast.

My purpose for the podcast is to be of service to my community. With over 29,000 downloads, I see the evidence that I am serving my podcast community. I’m grateful.

What are you grateful for?

 1. Realize the desperate desire to feel better.

Do you long to feel better?

I relate to this because my depression symptoms beat down on me—on a daily basis.

Have you noticed how we try to feel better by seeking to celebrate something?

Does it work?

How often do you finish something and wonder, “Why don’t I feel better now”?

Clearly, something is going on…

2. Experience true celebration and true essence.

Are we celebrating the outer things? A job promotion. Graduating at some school function.

What about celebrating something that is internal—something related to our true essence?

How would you describe yourself? By sex, gender, orientation? By level of education? By your job?

Or mother, father, brother, sister…?

What is your true essence? It is your soul and your oneness with the Gods. We can celebrate with ritual, prayer, and offerings.

 3. Experience the connection with ultimate support and comfort.

On a cloudy day, what remains constant? The sun and stars. You cannot see them, but they are constant.

This idea holds true with the God and the Goddess. They are a constant in our lives. They are always there for us. We just have to reach out to Them. Through prayer, meditation, and ritual.

But first, we must set aside distractions. And negative emotions. What is the solution? Grounding.

How Witches Handle a Time with a Partner in Crisis

Has your romantic partner said something awful to you recently?

Are you afraid that your partner is buckling under too much pressure at work and in life?

One time my husband went through some health issues. It was a crisis time.

I learned several things…

  1. Realize your partner is melting down next to you.

Do you feel like you did something wrong when your partner is angry? Unfortunately, my depression symptoms twist me into me feeling like I did something wrong. But this does not work. Just because he is upset doesn’t mean that it has anything to do with me. But my depression symptoms make it feel like the world is crashing down upon me.

At a time when my husband is upset and I get triggered, he says, “I’m melting down next to you.” Which is his shorthand for It’s not you.

This helps me a lot.

Remember, it may not be you at all when your partner is having a meltdown.

This protects you from extra, unnecessary pressure.

  1. Ask your partner, “What do you need?”

During the meltdown, you can ask your partner, “What do you need right now?” It could be a hug, or they may want you to listen to them.

This can be a big help to your partner in distress.

  1. Ask yourself, “What do I need?”

You will do well to ask yourself, “What do I need at this moment?”

Many times, I need space. Space to think and to be alone.

It is equally important to know what you need.

To take care of myself, I can say “How about we come back to this topic in three hours?” This gives me time to collect myself and talk to the Gods.

  1. Devote time with the Gods

In any dire situation, it is always good to take some time to talk with the Gods. Whether in prayer or meditation.

The Gods understand and can guide you on your path.

  1. Devote time with your support system.

It is also important to take time with your support system. It could be your High Priest/Priestess, friends, or family. Be sure to talk with someone who cares about you. Someone who really does care. Some family members just don’t have the ability to be truly present with you.

Instead, develop your own support system. Music could be part of your support system. Exercise and meditation can help.

How Witches Deal with Anger and Spellcasting

“I am furious,” my friend, Natalie, said.

I listened carefully and learned about the terrible things three people were doing that caused her trouble. I truly empathized with her position. I could relate that she felt her anger was justified.

Then she said something that gave me pause.

“I’m concerned that if I do any spellcasting in this frame of mind, I’ll create a karmic backlash on myself,” Natalie said.

I talked with spiritual elders about this.

Here are four insights.

  1. Believe Yourself

If you have an intuitive feeling that now is a terrible time to cast a spell, believe yourself. Believe your inner knowing. Furthermore, this could be the Gods warning you.

One of my friends said, “If you’re poisoned, then what you do will be poisoned.”

If you feel “poisoned” by anger, turn to the Tarot or another trusted divinatory tool. In this way, seek to know more about the situation. Avoid doing magick until you know more about a situation.

  1. Be sure to “ground yourself.”

If you’re upset, ground yourself. Grounding is a practice that can help you cleanse yourself of negative energies. You can arrive at more clarity about a situation.

I love grounding. Why? Because I have depression symptoms. It helps me clear my mind of negative thoughts.

Feeling angry is natural. Still, the effective witch learns to avoid reacting. The idea is for you to develop a positive response. That response is grounding.

You can turn negative energy and thoughts into positive action. How? Begin with grounding. Then learn more about the situation. Positive action rises out of clarity.

  1. Perform Shielding practices.

If you’re hit with negative energy, you can use shielding.

The great thing about shielding is you can…

  • Protect yourself
  • If necessary, create a “mirror” to repel malevolent energy

  1. Turn it over to the Gods.

If you are unsure if now is a good time to do magick, turn it over to the Gods. Pray to them. Do a meditation session to connect with Them. The Gods can see the playing field better than we can. They see all the moving pieces. We may not see the full sequence or interwoven nature of details and events.

Asking for guidance is a powerful step when you’re dealing with a crisis.

A Supportive Response to People Seeking Love and a New Chapter of Life

Recently, I have received multiple e-mail questions from women who wish to transition into a chapter of life with a loving partner. They speak of devoting all their time to working and taking care of family members like siblings and an older parent.

They sometimes say that they were stupid in failing to devote any time to healthy dating. They also complain of encountering commitment-phobic and abusive men. All of these details are truly serious, and I had multiple conversations with spiritual elders.

It breaks my heart to read emails in which the writer says that she wants to stop feeling empty and scared.

All of these issues and problems are deep and can be quite complicated. How Witches Learn the Right Lessons

“That’s it. I give up,” my friend, Kelsey, said. “The lesson is that I’m no good in a relationship.”

As I listened to her, I wondered if that was the real lesson about her latest relationship disaster.

Was there something else to learn?

Here are three insights.

  1. Your first guess about the lesson can be wrong.

At 18, I got married. Big mistake.

But if learned the wrong lesson—like giving up on relationships—I would have missed my current, blessed marriage.

Neuroscientists note that people’s brains do not fully develop until age 25. Until this age, the prefrontal cortex that helps curb impulsive behavior is not fully developed.

So, you guessed it. At 18, I made a rash decision.

Some covens do not allow younger members. In part, this relates to the ability to approach spirituality on another level.

The right lesson for me to learn is related to taking your time and getting to know someone.

  1. The right lesson empowers you.

Years ago, my sweetheart said, “I’m tired. I’m rushing like a racehorse.”

“Run in better races,” I replied.

The wrong lesson would be: “You’re tired so quit.”

Instead, my sweetheart learned the lesson to be selective. He learned to accept certain speeches over others. These decisions helped us get to Thailand and New Zealand—where he gave speeches.

  1. Invite the Gods to guide you

Often, the wrong lesson is the assumption that you don’t have what you want at this moment, and this means you’re doomed to an unfulfilling life.

However, the Gods know that so much in life is cyclical.

“The birth and rebirth of all nature,
The passing of winter and spring,
We share with the life universal,
Rejoice in the magical ring.”
– Doreen Valiente in The Witches Creed

It’s important to do meditation sessions so that you can listen to the Gods and intuition. Then you realize where you are in a cycle. If you’re creating something, are you at the beginning? Is this the Spring of the journey?

You can even look at this in terms of certain friendships. Some friendships are shorter. Are you in a time of winter? Has a particular relationship run its course?

In the following prayer, you can ask for the Goddess’s wisdom.

A Prayer

In moonlight’s bliss
And Goddess’s kiss,
May my path be right,
This moonlit night.
Let my decision
Have precision.
May I learn the right lesson
And know the true reason.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Find Internal Energy to Consistently Practice the Craft

“You said that if I want to prepare to do ritual on the astral plane, it helps for me to begin by practicing visualizing something as simple as a rubber ball,” my friend, Jessica, said.

“Yes,” I replied.

“How am I going to motivate myself to consistently practice visualization?” she asked.

“I have a couple of questions for you,” I began.

Here are three insights.

  1. Identify your tendencies.

We begin by looking into your tendencies. I talked with a friend who identified people’s reasons for taking action as falling into three categories:

  1. “For the team” person
  2. “I want to achieve” person
  3. “I want comfort above all else” person

Do you relate to one of these three categories?

Will you do more for others than for yourself? I find that I fit this category. I frequently jump to help friends and family members.

Do you really want to achieve something? Is witchcraft something that you want to master?

Do you want more relaxation and comfort?

The idea is to find out what your tendencies are. Then use what you learn to help you motivate yourself.

  1. Support your own path.

Learning and practicing the Craft is work. How do you get yourself to do work?

I found that if I make something a routine, I can get it done.

I also set my timer to remind me to do things—including the time for me to clean my cat’s litterbox.

My point is: You are unique. You will do better when you observe what patterns help you consistently do work … even the work of improvement in the Craft.

For example, I have my morning prayer on my laptop computer. I cannot use my laptop without seeing my morning prayer on it and reciting my prayer early in my day.

What will you do to set up a pattern, so you consistently practice elements of the Craft?

  1. Invite the Goddess to show you what can help your unique path.

Here is a prayer.

Prayer to the Goddess

Lovely Lady of the Moon,
Guide me to find my way.
Give me consistency and patience for my growth in the Craft.
Let Your light of intuition guide me to better self-knowledge.
Let me rise in my journey to know myself better with the Craft.
By Your Light may I be free,
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Set Boundaries with Goddess’s Help

“They called me in for work real early again!” my friend, Arianna, said.

I had nothing to say that could help her. She knew that it would be good to have a good boundary and say, “No” at times. But she didn’t do it.

I just listened with empathy in my eyes.

I have three insights for you.

  1. Be aware of the importance of boundaries

I see many people with inadequate skills related to boundaries. I certainly need something like a refresher course. I know we want to help everyone. But we also need to help ourselves. We need to take good care of ourselves so we can help others. So many times, I’ve been on a plane and heard the flight attendant say, “Put on your oxygen mask first before helping others.”

What is an “oxygen mask” in your daily life? What do you need?

We all have responsibilities. But there are several people who will pile on us—if we let them.

What is a healthy boundary? How about getting people to show some respect for your reasonable needs for time off and rest?

      2. Practice saying your boundaries

Do you know what are your boundaries? If not, think about it. You can even take a piece of paper and write down some appropriate boundaries.

I went through a self-defense course called Model Mugging. This is where you practice full force on an instructor. You shout out NO! and do self-defense moves, full force, on a padded attacker.

The same concept can be taken to boundaries as well. Once you have identified a boundary, you need to practice. Say it firmly out loud.

Perhaps, you say something like: “No. I cannot stay late here at work tonight. I have family details.”

Maybe, you might say, “No. You gave me no notice, and I have prior commitments.”

When it is appropriate, state your boundary with resolve.

How Witches Truly Cast Effective Spells

“You mentioned 5 elements of casting an effective spell,” a reader said. She went on to ask, “Of the five elements (intent, visualization, concentration, meditation, or willpower), which is the hardest and why?”

Intent

To do successful magick, you need to understand several things. First, you must have intent. You need to know what you want to manifest. You must be specific. You want a car? For what? Perhaps, you want something nice but economical. You don’t want a piece of junk that will break down on you every chance it gets. I suggest you go shopping, perhaps, on the internet. Get to know what you want and like for your car.

Having a solid intent is your first step before you do any magick. Once you have that cornerstone set you can continue with the second thing which is concentration. During your spell, you will need lots of concentration and visualization.

Visualization

When you imagine the car you want, get truly specific. What color? What gas mileage? Or is it an electric vehicle? Here’s an example, if you desire a convertible car, you imagine the wind blowing through your hair as you drive with the top down.

Concentration

This is the process of focusing and then refocusing your mind on your visualization task. In essence, you concentrate on the object and on the images in your mind that are specific for your desired manifestation. You will find that you may need to consciously redirect your mind to focus on the visualization object again and again

Meditation

Some Wiccans begin with a meditation to clear the mind before using both concentration and visualization. Consider doing a simple meditation in which you focus on your breath.

Willpower

When it comes to successfully perform magick, willpower, to me, means the driving force of desire for some form of change. So, I focus on the power of “I will.” This is an important distinction because many people think of willpower as only the ability to avoid temptation. Using your will is deeply rooted in your desire. Lack of will just creates another belly flop.

I’ve now shared with you the five must-haves (intent, visualization, concentration, meditation, and willpower) for doing magick that works.

Let’s return to the question: “Of the five elements (intent, visualization, concentration, meditation, or willpower), which is the hardest and why?”

  • For many people, visualizing is truly hard. Some of us actually tune into sound more than images. If you’re doing “visualizing,” you may need to “talk your way through.” You can say something like: “I now drive a blue Toyota 2015 Corolla that was lovingly cared for by the previous owner.” (This is merely an example. Working the words takes effort, time, and care.)
  • Because many people get intent wrong, it can be the hardest part. The easiest way to get intent wrong is to think in terms that are too broad and too general.
  • Several people find that meditation is nearly impossible for them. Trying to sit quietly can feel awful. Some people find it better to do a walking meditation.
  • Willpower can fall apart for several people. Why? When I talk about focusing on the power of “I will,” this may bring up many forms of self-doubt. My friend, Kelsey, said, “I will? Who am I kidding? I’m not strong, and I don’t deserve good things in life.” In this situation, Kelsey has an active ego that is sabotaging her willpower and spell-casting efforts.
  • In today’s society of massive distractions including social media and more, developing the skill of concentration is thwarted. My friend, Fred, mentioned how he found it necessary to practice piano every day to achieve a good level of playing skill. Learning to concentrate takes planning, effort, and practice. This can be so hard because many of us return home from work exhausted. You need the energy to develop your concentration skills.

How Witches Connect with People on a Visionary Level

“How do you have hope?” my friend, Kelsey, asked.

I remembered a definition that I heard. The word visionary relates to planning the future with imagination and/or wisdom.

They dwell in the deeps of the mind,
Immortal and ever-renewing,
With power to free or to bind.

  1. Align with the deeps of the mind.

In the deep of your mind, you can feel a true kinship with other human beings and the Gods. Being close to both is important. Still, remember that the ego is about the shallows of the mind. This is where separation and neglect come from. It’s important to realize that the ego is made of fear.

When you find yourself upset, it often comes from the ego’s focus.

On the other hand, in the deeps resides your divinity, gifted to you by the God and Goddess.

It’s vital to do rituals, meditation, and prayer to bring yourself into the deeps of your divinity.

  1. Align with your vision, imagination, and wisdom.

Let’s remember that your vision is connected to imagination and wisdom.

You have created better moments for your life. Imagination is what we use daily. If you’re cooking a meal, you imagine how all the flavors will come together. If you’re writing a resume, you’re imagining what the job interviewer needs to know so they hire you.

If you feel tired, shift your thoughts with prayers to the Gods. Invite the Gods to help you hope and dream of a better world for yourself and others. When you take care of yourself, you can brighten another person’s day by smiling and listening to them. One part of the world just got better.

  1. Invite the Goddess to help you put aside your ego and fear so you are truly present with another person.

Here is a prayer to help you shift from the ego to your Visionary Self.

Lovely Lady of the Moon
Help me release my pain.
Help me feel safe from the worries of the day.
Help me know my value and what I bring to the world
Give me peace of mind and heart this day.
So Mote It Be.
