How Witches Discover True Compatibility with a Romantic Partner

He looked good. Black hair and brown eyes. Real tall. Attractive.
We became a couple. But something was not working. I couldn’t feel comfortable to tell him about my experiences with Wicca. So, I just kept that to myself. It didn’t feel good.

Can you relate to this situation?

I have reflected on what is true compatibility with a romantic partner.

1. Where is passion and what is love?

When was the last time you were swept up with total attraction and passion for someone?

Have you found yourself saying, “I really want that person”?

What do you want? A night of passion. 27 nights of passion?

Or do you want them to love you?

And what is love if you cannot “just be yourself.” I’m not talking about being able to fart in front of them. (When you allow yourself to fart in front of someone, you’ve passed a threshold.)

I mean, can you express your joy and even questions about your journey with Wicca?

And if the person loves you, won’t they want to give you kindness and compassion? Don’t they want you to feel comfortable expressing what means so much to you about your spiritual path?

    2. Open to differences and accept them.

Not all of us are going to find a life partner who is also a witch of our dreams.

    Now what?

Have you met someone who fits your list of desired qualities?

But then you hear how rigid they are about religion or spirituality.

How do you find happiness with that person?

    Maybe you don’t.

I have learned that a healthy relationship has space for partners to be different.

And, what does it mean to accept the differences of your life partner?

It means giving them the space to walk their own, unique path parallel to your path.

They do not have to be Wiccan.

Still, I’ve learned that an openness to being able to talk about one’s spiritual path helps deepen a relationship. No one is trying to convince the other. We’re just listening.

At times, my husband says, “I know you’ll find your solution.” He’s there to help. Still, he trusts me and my own process to discover my next steps forward.

He will listen. He will sit in the discomfort with me as I work things out.

I’m grateful for that. We do not always agree. But we always have each other’s back.

Have you found someone who has compassion for others’ beliefs?

    3. Do you fit together like puzzle pieces?

“You like pizza. I like pizza. Let’s get married.” … that seems like the thought of several people.

What if we’re not supposed to find someone who is our clone?

Having similar interests is one thing. But having similar values goes much further.

Do you both value being kind?

Do you both value making a space for the other person to reach for their personal dream?

Have you noticed couples that “just work.” One is organized. The other is adventurous. They balance out. They stretch. They grow … together.

    Here’s a prayer:

    Lord and Lady,
    Guide me and my partner
To make space for more understanding
Teach us how to care for each other’s beliefs
May love create our happy relationship
    So Mote It Be

May these insights support your path.

    Blessed Be,

    How Witches Experience “Perfect Imperfection”

“How did your magick spell go?” my friend, Sharon, asked.

“Not the way I had hoped,” I replied.

    “Are you disappointed?” she asked.

“It may have been the perfect next step,” I said, thoughtfully.

I have three insights for you.

    1. Your first guess about a step or goal may be off.

Ever try to do something, and it just wasn’t working?

Maybe you were just off a bit.

Or maybe you need to learn something at this moment.

Have you met someone with a super-strong opinion? (Who hasn’t?)

Perhaps, you could see an angle on the situation that they could not.

And, sometimes, we need to experience something in order to have new insights.

Or … talking with trusted friends or spiritual elders can give us a new perspective.

      2. Hold loosely

Some people hold too tightly to a goal or, perhaps, a first guess about a career.

To “hold loosely” is to be more fluid in your goals.

Perhaps you first aimed to be a doctor. But maybe nursing or being a researcher fits you better. You’re still in the medical field.

How could you loosen your grip on an idea or opinion?

      3. Pick a direction.

The singer Sade began as a fashion designer. Her journey changed. She had many hit songs including “Smooth Operator,” “Kiss of Life,” and “Your Love Is King.”

What direction did she move in? Perhaps, one could call it “art” or “expressing yourself.”

You can pick a direction and stay tuned into the God and Goddess. How? Through rituals, meditation, and prayer.

If you are unsure of which direction to go, you can call upon the God and Goddess for help.

Some life coaches encourage their clients to pick a direction for a new year instead of being rigid about goals.

Picking a direction can be a healthy pattern for one’s life path.

When you pick a direction, you discover that many steps in life form “perfect imperfection.”

Here is a prayer you may consider:

      Lovely Lady of the Moon,
      Show my path’s direction soon.
      Help me stay on mission,
So, I can make my decision.
      Support my path,
May I grow in the Craft.
      So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

      Blessed Be,
      Moonwater

How Witches Bear the Unbearable – Ep. 291

How Witches Navigate the Paradox of Gratitude and Wanting More

“What do you want more of?” my friend, Cindy, asked me.

      “Peace,” I replied.

A lot runs through my mind. Am I taking good enough care of my elderly parents? What are the results of my latest health-related tests? Did I listen with enough attention to my husband and friends?

Some days it would be nice to have the feeling of peace and calm … for once.

I have three insights for you.

      1. You do not have to pick “this or that.”

Focusing on gratitude does not mean you need to let go of making progress to have more and better in your life. In his book on the subject, the author Tom Marcoux wrote: “It is an AND-Universe.”

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” – Eckhart Tolle

You can have both gratitude for what you have and a desire for more. Abundance is about more than enough. You can have an abundance of friends, family time, money, and more.

        2. Consider “gratefully going for more.”

Being grateful is a powerful source of energy. With our magickal skills, we can achieve the bigger and better facets of our cherished dreams.

The Gods want us to be happy. They want us to have what supports us in creating meaning in our lives.

People use whatever source of energy they can. I know someone who uses anger-energy to jump into action. Okay. And, it can be good to shift away from that energy once one is in motion.

Gratefully going for more is positive, healthy … and often fun.

        3. Ask Goddess to soothe your feelings about lacking.

I like this phrase “Send lacking packing.”

        How can you do that?

Connect with the Goddess. Use a prayer like this or something similar.

        Gracious Goddess,
        Ease my feelings of lack.
        Grow my abundance of _______.
So that I may be at peace with myself,
        And the world around me.
        So Mote It Be.

        May these insights support you.

How Witches Look At Life as Puzzle Pieces Fitting Together

“Joney is so pushy about data, data, data,” my friend, Marsha, said.

        She was right about that!

“And you put in your intuitive thoughts,” I said.

“Yeah. But Joney gets stuck. Our conversations are so uncomfortable…”

“Until you two finally find a new idea…often beyond both of you tossing in a first guess,” I said.

Joney and Marsha, as friends, are like two puzzle pieces. Both are different. Both are essential.

Here are some insights about parts of life fitting together.

        1. Everything is interconnected like a spider’s web.

“Poetry is a fresh morning spider web. Telling a story of moonlit hours of weaving and waiting during the night.” – Carl Sandburg

The person who weaves a poem—or other artwork—puts in meticulous effort.

The same happens for a witch’s fulfilling life.

        Hours of weaving and waiting…

Spells are like poems. We use poems in spells.

What in your life needs such care, time, and effort?

A fine arts painter is in my circle. It’s interesting that he makes the “puzzle pieces” of his artwork and puts them together in one painting.

Are you making new facets of your life?

        2. Sometimes you want puzzle pieces to fit together—and they do not.

Many years ago, I had a particular boyfriend. I thought I could live with someone who smoked tobacco. Well … that did not work.

We, witches, observe well. Sometimes, we observe that what we hoped would fit … does not.

Is there something not fitting in with your life?

        3. You can find a real fit when you let go of distractions.

“If that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without thee.” – Doreen Valiente

For me, this quote says, “If you don’t find your answer inside, you’re not going to find it outside.” I believe the Goddess speaks from within me.

Outside stuff can often be mere distractions.

I remember during my day to pause, breathe, and ask for Goddess’s guidance.

When do you want the Goddess’s guidance?

May these insights support your path.

How Witches Handle Being Totally Out of Control

My friend, Francesca, felt the tornado rise in her chest.
She was furious. But it was not her sister’s fault.

It was her awful father she had to face in two hours.
But she didn’t think that at the time.
She was just on edge—no—she was totally out of control.

She retreated and barely made it to the bathroom.

She looked into her own eyes…and she felt that she had lost a big part of herself. This anger, the feeling of being out of control, was not the person she wanted to be.

I have three insights for you.

        1. Identify you’re out of control.

          Ask yourself…
“Did I just say something I don’t mean?”
“Look at my hands. Am I so anxious that I shouldn’t drive a car?”
You may be feeling out of control.

          If so, stop. Pause. Breathe.

And look at this next step.

          2. Place boundaries and create space.

Often, we must stop. Pause. Breathe. Because someone or something is crashing into our life.

Some people drain our energy. Some might call those people “leaches” or toxic people.

You may need to set up some boundaries. Maybe something like, “I don’t talk to my ex-husband after 6:30 pm. We’ll talk about the kids before then.”

If you feel out of control, you may need to create space for yourself. Space to breathe. Space to be in a calm, peaceful mode of being.

Someone may have been a “friend” but now they are a “frenemy.” Maybe they are a narcissist.
Protect yourself. Protect your personal energy. Place boundaries and create space.

Regain control of your personal energy and personal space.

          3. Say a Prayer to bring your calm self back.

I like doing this simple prayer/rite with my husband when we feel impacted by stress. This is part of a grounding and centering process.

We breathe in deeply and say:

          God and Goddess.
          Thank you.
          We are loved.
          We are safe.
          God and Goddess bless us.
          We are grateful and strong.
          So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

How Witches Handle Conflict in Their Coven

“What happens when coven members have a big disagreement?” my friend, Sandra, asked.

“Each coven tends to have its own rules on disagreements. Also, each coven looks to their Tradition,” I began.

And, here are some thoughts that may help.

          1. Seek the leadership of the High Priestess or High Priest.

You go to the leader. Ideally, the leader listens as the concerned people each take a turn to express their views.

            2. Ask, “Is there anything else you want me to know?” and then listen.

The leader of the coven listens carefully.

Then when the person appears to have fully expressed themself, one can ask another question. Is there anything else you want me to know?

This shows that the leader cares. It also helps to say back what was said. Then ask, “Do I have that about right?”

The person will confirm it or add some more.

            3. Discover together “The Third Alternative.”

In a disagreement, one may find two opposing ideas. If people keep up the discussion, it is possible to find a “third alternative.” Person One wants Alternative One. Person Two wants Alternative Two.

The answer may be the Third Alternative—an idea beyond both suggestions.

            You might add a prayer:

            Goddess,
Guide us to find a Third Alternative.
May we develop a way to support the whole coven.
            So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

How Witches Create the Power of Flow in Their Lives

Many years ago, I was new to Wicca. I needed a magical name.
One night, I asked Goddess to please give me a magical name.
I woke up in the middle of the night—my whole body vibrating.
I heard “Moonwater.” I knew instantly that was my magical name.

Would you like to find something definite in your life?

I have three insights for you.

            1. Let go of a rigid pattern.

My friend, Athena, finds herself thinking about this one mean coworker after work.
At a picnic, I saw an upset look come upon her face.
            “Are you okay?” I asked.
            “I’m okay now,” she replied.
            “What was that?”

She took in a deep breath. “Just a thought, that I’m letting flow down the stream.”
That’s a powerful method. Athena decided to not let thoughts of her mean coworker interfere with our picnic with friends.

What thought do you need to just flow down the stream?

            2. Connect with the element of water.

Water flows and can wash away negative energies. Ritual bathing is a good choice if you’re not feeling good. You may have extra unwanted negative energy clinging to you. When you take a ritual bath, you release yourself from such negativity.

            Let water renew you.

            3. Pray to the God and Goddess.

When you need the Power of Flow in your life, consider saying a prayer like this:

My virile Lord and lovely Lady,
Connect me with the Element of Water.
Empower me to let negative thoughts flow away
Like on a stream of water.
            Let me embrace the sun
            Of Your Wisdom and Grace.
            So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your journey.

            Blessed Be,
            Moonwater

            Beltane 2024

            Sunflowers

            Sunflowers

Happy Beltane to all! May you be blessed with the season’s energies.

            Beltane

To our ancestors, Beltane celebrates the beginning of summer. Bale or “bon” fires are an important part of the Beltane Sabbat. All fires at home or in shops were extinguished and then re-lit from the sacred bonfires that blazed on the tops of the surrounding hills. This was also the time when the herds were blessed. The people marched their cattle around and between the bonfires to bring good luck and fertility and to protect them during the year.

The Sabbat Beltane, coincides with when the God actually impregnates the Goddess. This sacred act ensures the continued fertility for crops and animals throughout the light half of the year (between the Spring and Fall Equinoxes.)  A popular symbol for this sacred act, the May Pole represents the impregnation of the goddess. A May Pole is a pole set erect in the ground with ribbons attached on the top. People then each take a ribbon and dance in a weaving pattern around the pole. The pole represents God’s phallus and the colorful ribbons that the dancers wind around the May Pole represent the goddess with her flowers a-blooming. And so the impregnation of the Goddess is fulfilled.

            Blessed be,

How Witches Move Their Life to “Better Than Expected”

“What turned out better than you thought?” my husband asked me.
“When I met you,” I replied.
“What? I didn’t make a good first impression?” my husband asked.
“No. It wasn’t that. I just didn’t think we’d connect. You seemed unavailable.”
            “I was unavailable,” he said.
I emailed the man who would later be my second husband. I wrote: “And darn it. I like you.”
That was a stretch for me.
It worked out better than I expected.

I have three insights for you.

            1. Acknowledge your expectations.
My friend, Stephen, had two romantic partners (in succession) who had to have a breast cancer-detecting biopsy. Each time, he told himself, “I’ll wait for the results. I don’t have the data. She needs me to be strong. I will not fall apart. I’ll wait for the results.”

Stephen purposely paused. He put his negative expectations on hold. Things turned out well. Both women had biopsies showing a benign situation.

Do you expect your magick will fail to work?
Do you think things just won’t work with your romantic partner?
            Pause.
            Acknowledge your expectations.
Ask yourself: “What if all this is NOT true?”
What if you will NOT get the worst outcome?
If you want to get out of your own way, pause. Acknowledge your expectations. Realize that the future will arrive. Some things WILL turn out better than you expect. Avoid unnecessary suffering in the meantime.

              2. Expand your perception.
Sometimes we need to focus on our intuition and our divinatory tools to expand our perceptions of things yet to come.
A friend, Anna, faces a terrible co-worker each day she goes to work. She pauses. She asks Goddess, “What can I learn here?” In her meditation sessions, she realizes that she is learning something. She’s learning how to deal with a toxic person. She might end up teaching friends (maybe teaching classes) methods to handle a toxic person. Anna has successfully expanded her perception.
How will you pause? How can you expand your perception? Do you have a spiritual elder who can advise you?

              3. Invite the Goddess to quiet down your fear and limited expectations.
Why do we have negative expectations?
First, our biology makes us have a “negative bias.” Science shows that people are constantly scanning their environment for threats. That’s how our ancestors lived long enough to have kids.
This negative bias fills us with fear.
You can ask the Goddess to quiet down your fear and limited expectations.

Here is a prayer you might use:

              My Gracious Goddess,
Guide me to quiet my fears.
Help me move forward in hope.
And then, I will take action.
I will NOT shut down and stand still.
I will walk the hopeful path You have set for me.
              So Mote It Be.

May these insights support your path.

              Blessed Be,
              Moonwater
