How Witches Handle Memories That Haunt You

“Amy, you look tired,” I said to my friend.

“I didn’t get a good night’s sleep,” she said. “My bad memories kept me up all night. I feel like they kept vomiting in my mind. All the pain I have endured throughout my life.”

This began an extended conversation.

And, I have three insights for you.

  1. Realize that a memory is not solid like titanium.

Scientists have uncovered that each time we go back to a memory it is malleable. It is soft like gold is soft. Each time we access our memories they change a little. The neurons are modified.

It’s like you have a filing cabinet. You pull out the drawer and grab a file folder. Your viewing the “file” changes it. Then you put it back into the drawer.

For example, Susan has a bad memory of being bullied by her brother—when they were kids. But then she can choose to remember that experience as a first step to her becoming strong. She turned to her parents and asked for karate lessons. Soon, with new skills, she defended herself. Her brother realized that he was now at a disadvantage. (Go, Susan!)

So, she can view her childhood memory as that first step. Then the memory loses its “bad power.”

  1. Begin the transformation of a memory.

I have some memories that bring up terrible feelings. I have started a process. When a bad memory comes up, I think (or say out loud): “Thank you, I heard you. I have learned the lesson from this. I am taking steps forward beyond this now.”

This process helps me with certain memories. [Other memories may require professional help.]

  1. Pray to the Goddess for guidance.

Here is a prayer:

Goddess, help me see,
How I can change my memories.
Take me gently in Your arms,
Mold my memories so I’m not alarmed.
Hold me safe and hold me true,
I can grow stronger and hold faith, too.
Give me peace so I may be,
Completely calm,
So Mote It Be.
