How Witches Use Wise Attention instead of Self-Absorption

Have you ever had a thought that beat you up? Maybe you made a mistake, and you felt bad about it.

My depression symptoms are like a bad army that marches on my head. The depression symptoms show up as certain thoughts that form awful criticisms. I need to be careful so those thoughts do not take over my experience of life. Instead, I must use wise attention to keep me from spiraling downward.

Wise attention is part of a process of expanding your perception.

I have three insights for you.

  1. Let go of Self-Absorption.

Many of us have a friend who bends our ear with constant complaints and tales of pain. When someone is feeling pain, it’s easy to be self-absorbed. Giving in to such habits will create more pain in your life. If you are talking about your back pain, and ruminating all day on it, you only make yourself and others miserable.

We can look on negative thoughts like leaves on a stream. Some of us pick up a negative thought (“a leaf”) and place it close to our eyes so we can see nothing else.

Instead, we can make a shift to wise attention.  

  1. Bring wise attention into focus.

Wise attention is about having a perspective that is expansive. For example, Susan is dealing with back pain. However, she pauses and does some deep breathing. It’s true she is experiencing pain. But she also realizes that she has blessings all happening at the same time. Her family members are well. She has a job that provides financial prosperity so her family is supported. As she deep breathes and experiences gratitude, she discovers that her back pain reduces a significant amount.

Wise attention is not denying you that you are in pain or discomfort. That would be unhealthy. Wise attention is stepping back from your pain and discomfort and seeing it for what it is. You can step back and see a larger picture.

  1. Ask the Gods to guide you through it all.

My depression symptoms are with me every day. Through focusing on wise attention, I realize the strength of my depression symptoms is not a constant. When I’m in meditation or when I ask the God and Goddess for help, I can experience a shift into wise attention.

I also deep breathe and pray to the Gods to help me calm down. I can stand back and see my problems as part of the fabric of my life.

Years ago my sweetheart said, “You have a choice. You could look on yourself as a spirit who deals with depression symptoms instead of merely calling yourself a ‘depressed person.’”

The idea that I am a spirit who is not identified with depression symptoms is part of wise attention. I also realize I will have a chance to be reincarnated without such limitations. This reminds me that I am a spirit having an experience with this particular body. Potentially, in my next incarnation, my spirit will be free of such depression symptoms. And now, it is my challenge to shift to wise attention and avoid allowing depression symptoms to crush me into self-absorption.

How Witches Elevate the Positive Divinity Inside Them

“It almost feels like I have two opposite voices inside me. One is full of hope and the other one is full of fear,” Darrell, a friend said.

This conversation reminded me of something called the Theory of Possible Selves by Hazel Markus and Paula Nurius.

Often, I write about how the Gods have placed divinity within us. Recently, I’ve been thinking about how that personal divinity is connected with hope and love.

The Theory of Possible Selves suggests that you have possible Hoped-for Selves and you have Feared Selves.

Here are three insights.

  1. Identify how your Feared Self operates during your daily life.

During my day, my Feared Self acts like a loud passenger that criticizes me down to the bone. The criticism rises from my fear related to my health and connected to fear of somehow becoming homeless. The real problem is the Feared Self acts like a shackle that prevents you from getting more and better into your life. What is your own Feared Self saying to you?

  1. Discover how you would like your Hoped-for Self to be more present in your life.

My Hoped-for Self is a quiet passenger. Much more subdued than the Feared Self. I need to coax it out from the background. I must feed it to give it strength. My Hoped-for Self needs space to grow. If you don’t make the appropriate space, the Feared Self will take over.

Imagine a garden. Your Hoped-for Self is like roses. And the Feared Self is like weeds. You need to tend the garden so the Hoped-for Self (roses) will thrive. If you don’t, the weeds will take over.

  1. Use a simple ritual to elevate and honor your Hoped-for Self.

Here is a simple ritual that you can do to honor your Hoped-for Self.

Timing: Waxing to full moon. During the sunrise in the morning.

What you will need:

  • One orange chime candle
  • Boline
  • Rose oil
  • Candle holder
  • Fireproof surface
  • Silver ring

Cast Circle in the usual manner. Cleanse and consecrate all your items.

Dress the orange chime candle with rose oil. Use the boline to carve Hoped-for Self on the orange chime candle. Put the ring around the candle. Place the candle in the candle holder. (Be careful: If your ring has gems in it, watch out because they may be damaged if placed near flames.)

Now concentrate on your Hoped-for Self. Think of all the things you hope for in yourself and the world around you. Feel the happiness of all you hope for.

Once you have that feeling firm in your heart, light the chime candle and say:

Little bright dancing flame,
I instill this ring in your name,
Your energy runs down into this ring,
Instilling my Hoped-for Self in this thing.
Hoped-for Self is now instilled,
Full of energy and now fulfilled.
So Mote It Be.

Let the chime candle burn itself out on its own. Once that has happened, place your ring on your finger.

Every time your Feared Self rises, twist the ring on your finger clockwise (“deosil”.) Say, “Hoped-for Self is here to stay.”

How Witches Take Care of Their Heart

Are you taking care of your heart?

A friend, Steve, told me a story that touched my heart. Years ago, he taught summer day camp children. One boy had trouble with the project the other children were working on.

The boy, “Mike,” had a problem holding a pair of scissors.

Steve thought that maybe the boy had mobility issues.

But then it dawned on him, and he looked for a left-handed pair of scissors.

Mike’s eyes lit up. He could use the left-handed scissors well.

This story reminds me that we may be failing to support ourselves.

We are not broken. We may miss what we need to do well in our lives.

Here are three insights.

  1. Look for your personal way of moving in the world.

As an individual, do you feel you’re out of step with others? For example, being dyslexic, I have my own way of seeing and moving in the world. I am more motivated by images than text. I am very visual and see the world in a way that others do not.

How do you experience and move through your world?

  1. Ask yourself, “Am I supporting myself in a unique and personal way?”

As witches, we have unique ways of doing things. We do not follow the pack. But have you really looked at how you support yourself? Are you devoting time and energy to help yourself stay strong? For example, I knit and bake. Sometimes, I take a break from one or the other. It’s about listening to myself. Additionally, I support myself with prayer and talking to the God and the Goddess.

  1. Ask the Goddess for insight on how to support yourself in a personal way.

Meditation is a great way to talk with the God and Goddess. You can go into a meditation and ask these questions to the Gods:

  1. What is the most helpful way to support myself?
  2. How can I be kinder to myself?
  3. How can I grow?

May these insights support your heart as you travel your path.

How Witches Open the Door to a Higher Level of Practice

 

“What makes a real difference?” I asked in a conversation with a spiritual elder.

One word arose: “Listening.”

I realized that listening actually moves us, witches, to a higher level of practice.

Here are three insights.

  1. Listen to what people near you are truly saying.

Someone tried to give me advice that I didn’t ask for. I disagreed with their assessment. But I listened to their words, ideas, and emotion.

My point is that listening, in this situation, does not mean agreement. You do not need to follow another person’s advice.

It’s more like a friend saying, “You might want to take a look at this.”

If you disagree with someone, it doesn’t mean that they are completely wrong.

Listening is a skill. And just like magick, you need to practice it to get better.

Here is an example of listening. A family member has a process. When someone says something that he does not relate to immediately, he says, “I’ll stir that in my soup.” He means that he will give the idea some thought and time. He is free to change his perception or approach later.

The effective witch listens to conversations because clues for uplifting your life can show up in such conversations.

  1. Listen to the God and Goddess

“And ye shall be free from slavery….Let my worship be within the heart that rejoiceth, for behold: all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you.” – The Goddess speaking in The Charge of the Goddess, written by Doreen Valiente

When listening to the God and Goddess, practice quieting your mind. A practice of meditation and prayer can help you.

We can look on being caught in negative thinking as a form of slavery. It helps to practice your own methods to shift out of negative thought patterns. Someone I know places her hand on her heart and tells herself: “I’m okay. I’m safe. I’m loved. God and Goddess love me.” She tells me that this helps her shift out of fearful thoughts. In a quieter state of mind, she talks with the God and Goddess.

  1. Pay attention for the “Signs”

We can become good at spotting the signs from the Gods. Signs can come in many forms from unexpected appearances of certain animals to something that will make you stop and think. For example, many witches consider seeing an image of a white heron or the actual bird as a sign of the Goddess. It is a positive sign.

When you receive a positive sign, devote some time to think about it and meditate on it. Watch for any further signs.

How Witches Discover Better than New Year’s Resolutions

“That’s it! I’m done with New Year’s Resolutions. They just give me stress, and they don’t give me anything good,” my friend, Audrey, said.

I reflected on the contradictions and problems that arise with New Year’s Resolutions.

Here are three insights.

  1. Find the theme of your New Year.

Instead of having a New Year’s Resolution, try having a New Year’s Theme. What’s the usual pattern for a New Year’s Resolution? You want something, perhaps, to lose weight. You tell yourself that you’re going to do a specific difficult action repeatedly until you get what you want. You have probably seen how New Year’s Resolutions tend to be broken.

But a new theme for the year is something different. It is a particular direction for the upcoming year. That means that it doesn’t need to be perfect. You can still be you and start a theme of where you want to go in your year. A theme can be something like demonstrate more kindness or take new steps to support a long-term dream. When you take any small action in the direction of your theme, you are succeeding.

  1. Observe how things blossom.

New Year’s Resolutions tend to be about doing something that is hard and gritting your teeth to keep going. On the other hand, a theme can be soft. The theme can lead to more possibilities for you to blossom into something different.

You can sit in meditation and observe how your life blossoms around you. You may discover new opportunities or new friends.

For example, I have a friend who got a new job. It requires him to move to another state. At first, he was hesitant, but he knows the God and Goddess have plans for him and his new chapter of life.

  1. Realize the God and Goddess’s overall plan for your journey.

The God and God have placed divinity within you. How does each one of us, as an individual, fulfill the potential of such divinity? Since the Gods have an overview of how you can grow as a spirit, They understand you may need to go through difficult times which you would not choose to endure.

If you find yourself in a tough time, you might consider it to be a transitional chapter of your life. Remember that the God and Goddess will guide you on your path.

I know that the Gods have a plan for me. Sometimes, I may not like certain details on the path set before me. Still, the Gods have a plan that supports the best for my learning.

How Witches Experience “Being”

“Are you okay?” I asked my friend, Steve.

He didn’t say anything. He kept moving fast around his small apartment kitchen. He had recently returned from work, and he was still in a frantic, rush-rush mode.

Watching him suffer, I thought about how we, witches, need to shift gears and return to the experience of being.

Here are three insights.

  1. Focus on your breathing.

An essential way to connect with the present moment is to focus on your breathing. When stressed, people tend to hold their breath. This doesn’t help.

Notice the breath coming in through your nostrils, filling up your diaphragm, and then exhaling through your mouth. You can slow down your breathing and relieve some tension. This form of breathing helps you experience being

  1. Be grateful.

Focusing on something that you’re grateful for is a present moment experience.

Two things take you out of the present moment: Worrying about the future or feeling regret about the past.

Experience the present moment and say a prayer of gratitude to the Gods. This can bring you back into the space of deep appreciation and gratitude for all the support you receive from Them.

If you get stuck in consuming social media, you may be overwhelmed with feelings of lack about things you don’t have. However, when you are in a prayer of gratitude, you can step back from all that noise.

  1. Meet the Gods in the present moment.

Here is a simple ritual. Prepare to relax in a chair with a nice glass of wine or juice. Once you’re settled, in your mind, have a conversation with the Gods. You can tell Them how you feel. Then you can make an offering by pouring some of the juice or wine into an offering bowl. While you do this, share with Them what you’re grateful for.

Here is an example of a short prayer for such an occasion.

Lord and Lady,
I deeply appreciate all that You’ve given me.
Help me stay present in this moment of love.
I’m grateful for the divinity You placed within me
and how this journey shows me how to be free.
So mote it be.

How Witches Connect with the Meaning of Life and Newfound Happiness

“I struggle so hard. But I feel empty,” Freda, an acquaintance, said. The ensuing conversation invited me to look deeper into my own struggles.

Here are three insights

  1. Observe the relationships in your life.

“Relationship itself gives meaning to life.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Who are the people who mean the most to you in this world?

How do you feel about your relationships with them? I’ve realized that just devoting a little time to listen to a family member or friend creates meaning for us. Listening creates trust. And trust uplifts the relationship.

I’ve also learned that listening is hard work. I need to hold back and let the person finish what they need to say. I also need to say back what I heard so that they know that I understand what they feel and experience. Are you listening to your family and friends?

  1. Elevate your relationship with the God and Goddess.

Do you talk with the Gods often? Do you thank Them for the blessings of your life? The Gods stand by and wait for your invitation to interact with Them. They want you to feel good and to create happy outcomes in your life.

They have so much to teach us. It also helps for us to watch for signs. For example, Jesse had a choice of two previously owned cars. His small budget meant that he needed to make the right choice. He asked the God and Goddess to give him a sign. He asked to see a horse galloping if his first choice of a car was the best one. Now this would be an unusual because he lived in the city. Soon, Jesse walked down a street and saw a figurine of a galloping horse in a store window. To Jesse, this was a sign from the Gods.

  1. Devote yourself to three essential parts of a relationship: Time, Attention, and Ritual.

Every day my sweetheart massages my feet for five minutes. Often this happens just before I go to sleep. It’s a ritual with us. It’s one of the many ways that I know that he cares about me and loves me.

What rituals do you have with your own relationships?

What rituals do you have with your relationships with the Gods? I talk to the God and Goddess just about every day. On the days I miss a conversation, I really see a difference in how strong my bond is with Them.

Any relationship, even one with the Gods, needs time and attention. Do you have a daily ritual for connecting with the God and Goddess?

How Witches Calm Themselves in Turbulent Times

“Two times this week, I woke up with my heart racing,” my friend, Amanda, said.

We had a thoughtful conversation. Amanda shared with me her process of deep breathing and placing her hand on her heart.

I was impressed with how she could help herself calm down.

Here are three insights.

  1. Avoid “observe the breath” in favor of “being with your breath.”

Many meditation instructors suggest that one “observe the breath.” That places you outside of the process.

Observing the breath can get you stuck in your rational mind. You become separate from your breath. You can become a critic of your own breathing. You may think it is not slow enough or that your heart rate is not coming down fast enough.

Instead, be gentle. Shift to the idea of being with your breath. Now, you are one with your breath. Be with your breath as you deeply inhale. Stay with your breath as you extend your exhalation. Gently. Incrementally. Do not push. Allow the shift.

  1. Hold a safe space for whatever feeling you’re experiencing.

The idea of being with your breath is not about suppressing a negative emotion. The good news is by gently shifting how you breathe and focus on a positive idea, you can make a shift. Placing her hand over her heart, Amanda uses the idea of I am safe, and Goddess loves me.

Amanda repeats this affirmation while she does deep breathing—as many times as is necessary. She doesn’t push herself. She allows the shift in experience to happen naturally.

  1. Experience a Candle Lighting and Breathing Ritual.

As you safely do a candle lighting ritual, consider using this chant. Breathe slowly and deeply.

Candle Lighting and Deep Breathing Chant

In your mind, repeat these words with each breathing cycle.

(breathe in) Goddess surrounds me.
(breathe out) With all Her Love.
(breathe in) The God protects me.
(breathe out) I am safe.
So Mote It Be.

You can repeat the above chant as many times as you find helpful.

How Witches Keep Moving Forward on Dark Days

“I feel exhausted,” my friend, Susan, said.
“Any way I can help?” I asked.
“I’m not sure. I continue to tell myself, ‘Just put one foot in front of the other,’” she said.
Later, I reflected on the idea that on some “dark days,” we need to just keep moving.

Here are three insights.

  1. Keep moving forward slowly and steadily.

Have you noticed on some days it takes every bit of energy that you have just to keep moving forward? You’d like to get more done. You also would like to feel better. But some dark days require us to only endure. To endure we keep taking steps forward. Let’s realize that the God and Goddess are with us, and They see the whole picture. On some dark days just moving forward slowly and steadily is a heroic act. The God and Goddess give us full credit for all our good intentions and our moving forward slowly and steadily.

  1. Let go of your baggage.

Some time ago, I was working on a flyer. I really wanted to accomplish a certain shading for part of it. Somehow the application was just not working. At that moment I just really wanted to perfect this. But then I remembered something that a spiritual elder had brought to my attention. The idea was: Nonattachment means holding preferences and not demands. So, this moment was an opportunity for me to let go of my baggage. It was a time for me to let go of a demand on myself to do “perfect work.”

My feeling had been that my work was a reflection of my identity. If the work was imperfect, then there was something wrong with me. But then I realized if the flyer works well enough, and I don’t attach it to my identity, then I can experience a form of freedom. When you let go of your baggage, it’s possible for you to experience some freedom.

  1. Hear different layers of what the Goddess is saying.

At one point, I saw these two phrases from The Charge of the Goddess to be in opposition to each other.

1. “Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever toward it; let naught stop you or turn you aside.”

2. “I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart. Upon earth, I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal…”

At first glance, I saw the first phrase to be supporting the idea of perfectionism. Then, I saw the second phrase as something that is comforting. Eventually, I realized that both ideas can come together. It does not have to be this one or that one.

To combine the ideas, the meaning could be:

Keep moving forward. Do not give up. And all along the way, the Gracious Goddess will support you and give you the gift of joy unto your heart. Her comfort includes that you are more than this current project or work. You are the spirit eternal. And that’s what is important.

How Witches Rise from the Valley of Pain

Have you had a “near life” experience? No, I’m not talking about a near death experience. I’m talking about actually getting a glimpse of what your life is really about. Do you relate to this?

I have found that some of the most beautiful parts of life arise during some of the most difficult transitions in life.

Here are three insights.

1. Many lessons rise from the Valley of Pain.

Are you going through a tough time in life? Have you had any moments when a friend or a family member has done something kind, and you felt supported?

I’ve learned that many times when I felt at my lowest, there was a moment when someone did a kind gesture for me. Gratitude flowed throughout my body. In that moment, I actually felt connected to the universe, to the friend, and to the God and Goddess.

2. Your soul wants to grow.

In a conversation, a spiritual elder said, “We long for comfort, but the Soul wants learning.”

In times of discomfort, we often discover that we’re stronger than we ever imagined.

Sometimes, the lesson is to be patient or to let go. Maybe, we’re called to be the kinder and stronger person in the situation.

The lesson may be to stand up for yourself if some bully (even a family member) tries to make you conform to their picture of life.

These tough times can be easier to endure if you incorporate prayer to the God and Goddess.

A prayer to the Gods

Gods, give me strength in this adversity.
May my mind and heart be open to compassion.
May my actions be of compassion.
So Mote It Be.

3. The Gods will help you through the Valley of Pain.

The Gods are there for you. As you go through the Valley of Pain, They want to assist you as much as possible.

I look on life as having a series of chapters. Some chapters are when you’re stuck in the shadow, in the Valley of Pain. No one wants to stay stuck in pain. However, some of us prefer the known to the unknown. Some people seem to say, “It hurts, but at least I know what to expect.”

The gracious Goddess knows that at times you’re going to need to step forward in faith.

Hold to the faith that the Goddess wants the best for you. Know that She will provide you comfort. You’ll feel Her influence in a friend’s kind voice or simple gesture of support for you.

Sometimes, the only way out is through the Valley of Pain. The good news is: If you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, eventually you rise out of the valley. Then, you see new choices and new opportunities as you ascend the mountain.

Long ago Winston Churchill said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” You just need to keep moving forward. Stand up, avoid sitting and wallowing in the Valley of Pain. Avoid remaining stuck in the pain. Keep moving forward to new opportunities for growth.
