Was 2018 a tough time for you? Want to release 2018 in a healthy and powerful way?
I know several people who had a rough year. Car accidents, health problems, relationship troubles and more.
Now that the calendar New Year approaches, we, Wiccans, have a chance to manifest the New Year as positive.
Here is a Ritual to help you manifest what you desire in the New Year:
What you will need:
2 pieces of virgin paper
Black marker
Cauldron or fireproof container.
Drawing oil (or extra virgin olive oil)
Gold tapered candle. (You could use a yellow candle in its place.)
Candleholder
Pliers
Straight Pins
Large metal tray with sides
Altar
Tools
Cake
Wine or juice
What to do:
Read the instructions here thoroughly before you start.
On a waxing moon, Cast Circle in the usual manner.
Cleanse and consecrate all your items (the paper, marker, candle, and pins).
Dress your gold tapered candle by stroking the oil from tip to base. Place this candle in its holder, and then place both into the middle of the large metal tray.
Sit and meditate on what you want to bring into your life in the New Year. Think of each of those desires and wishes.
Pick a pin and assign a desire or wish to it. Using the pliers, hold that pin by the head, and heat it on the Working Candle.
Poke the heated pin into the gold tapered candle.
Repeat until you have all your desires and wishes for the New Year (as the pins) inserted in the candle.
Write “2018” on one of the pieces of paper.
On the other piece of paper, inscribe your name or signature. Then place the “your name-paper” under the Candle.
Light the candle and say:
Golden candle your flame’s now alight Give me what I desire tonight.
Ignite the piece of paper with the old year written on it. Place the lit paper in the cauldron to burn away completely, and say:
Bad luck of this year I command, fly away. Good luck of the coming year is here to stay. With each pin that sings, a wish comes true. Hopes of the future now bloom anew. As I so will, So Mote it Be.
You notice that as the gold tapered candle burns down, the pins fall into the tray. With the pins that fall, your desires will manifest in the coming year.
“Sometimes, it feels like there’s so much going on and friendships can get hurt along the way. I mean—we all get stressed out,” my friend, Joyce, said. “I’m wondering if there is a magickal way to strengthen a friendship.”
I gave this a lot of thought, and here is a True Friends Spell.
What you will need:
One pink candle
Candle-holder
Rose Incense
Rose oil
Two rings
Ritual tools
Cast Circle in the usual manner.
Dress your candle by rubbing your oil from tip to base. Cleanse and consecrate your candle and rings. Place the pink candle on your altar in its holder. Place the rings by the candle. Take your friend’s hands and both of you say over the rings together:
I swear upon my soul,
Honesty, love, and kindness I shall show.
I State my true name (_each state your name_),
That I am a true friend to you through and through.
That I will be most honest with you,
As I so will, so mote it be!!
Each person places a ring on the other person’s hand other and says:
True friends, true as can be.
Together now so mote it be!
Do the Cakes and Wine Ceremony
Close your Circle
May this True Friends Spell strengthen your bond with your close friend.
“It’s all wrong now. I’m boxed in. I just want to feel that I have some freedom. Freedom to choose.”
“Have you asked the ALL for help?” I suggested.
Simply put, Rachael was stuck. She felt she had no where to go in her current situation. So here is a simple spell to gain the help of the ALL.
Read over the spell carefully several times before you do it.
What you’ll need:
One small white candle (it needs to be small, so you can burn it out in one sitting)
Candle holder
Olive oil
Garlic
Robe
Perfume (frankincense preferably)
Cakes and wine/juice (This can be as simple as some cookies and juice)
Offering dish (you will need one)
Sea salt
Small table (something to put your candle and cakes and wine/juice on)
Small jar
Small bowl of purified water
Small bowl of sea salt
Purified or spring water
Lighter or matches
What to do:
Start by thoroughly crushing the garlic and put it into a small jar of your olive oil. Set aside the mixture in a dark place (like a closet) for nine days.
When your oil is done do the following.
Take a ritual bath:
On a full or waxing moon. First bathe to wash all of the physical dirt from your body. Then draw a new bath and put three tablespoons of sea salt into the water. Soak in the water and think of all the negative energy being absorbed by the salt water. Breathe in and out deeply. Relax… Take your time.
Use a clean towel to dry off. Put on a clean robe.
Next, go to your room and clear a space and place your small simple table (this will be your altar) in the center. Place the candle in the middle of the altar. Additionally, set up your small water bowl, sea salt bowl, and food and drink on either the side of the candle.
Disrobe and sit in front of the altar.
Submerge your index fingertip in the bowl of water and say:
I cleanse and consecrate thee, Water, that you are pure and clean.
Then place your index fingertip into the bowl of salt and say:
I cleanse and consecrate thee, Salt, that you are pure and clean.
Put three pinches of the blessed sea salt into the bowl of water and stir clockwise (using your index finger).
Sprinkle (asperge) the bottle of perfume with the holy water (the salt water you just made) onto the candle and say:
I cleanse and consecrate thee, Perfume, that you are pure and clean.
Asperge the candle with the holy water and say:
I cleanse and consecrate thee, Candle, that you are pure and clean.
Spray some of the holy perfume onto you and breathe it in deeply. Breathe in and out three times as you clear your mind. Take your time…
Time to dress your candle: This means that you take the garlic oil and rub it onto the candle from wick to the base of the candle. Carve the word “freedom” on the candle and place in the candle holder.
Light the candle and say:
I ask you,
Who is the lightness and darkness,
Who is the powers of the winds,
Who is the powers of the seas,
Who is the powers of the mountains,
Who is the powers of the flame within.
Who is powers all life and love.
And who is the source of all things,
The Great and powerful ALL,
I ask you for change and freedom for the good of all!
As I so will, So mote it be!
As the candle burns, think of all the freedom you now have as this Spell manifests what you desire.
Again, take your time…
Finally, set your cakes and wine/juice in front of you. Hold your dominant hand over them and say:
I bless this food and drink that it will keep me strong.
Place each of some of the food and drink into the offering dishes saying:
To the ALL!
You can now partake of the food and drink.
Let the candle burn itself completely out. (Warning: Never leave a burning candle unattended.)
“I’m concerned about curses. How can I protect myself?” one of my readers asked.
Here’s an easy Hex-breaking Candle Spell.
What you will need:
One black chime candle
One brown chime candle
One white chime candle
Sea salt
A picture of yourself
Cookie sheet or pan
Tinfoil
What to do:
Cover the cookie sheet with your tinfoil.
Start at the middle of the pan, and pour a line of salt, going from left to right.
Place your picture on the right end of your salt line.
Make a circle around your picture by pouring salt to create that circle. Make sure the salt-circle connects to the salt-line you previously made.
Set the black candle on the left side, at the starting end of the salt-line.
Place the brown candle in the middle of the line, and finally set the white candle on the end of the line, next to your picture.
Think of all the stuff that has been going wrong in your life. Really get your emotions into it. Once you have worked yourself up, light the black candle. Next, light the brown candle. Imagine all the muck draining away from your life.
It’s important to breathe deeply, as you focus on the bad stuff leaving your life for good. Take your time.
Once you have envisioned the muck completely vanishing from your life, light the white candle.
You can meditate on the good things you would like to see manifest in your life.
IMPORTANT: Let all the candles burn themselves completely out. And make sure to avoid leaving a burning candle unattended.
May this Hex-breaking Candle Spell help you move forward in your life.
Often, I’m asked about how Wiccans can really support their relationship with God and Goddess and deepen their Wiccan spiritual practice.
I often share The Three Elements to Improve Your Wiccan Practice.
What do you want to accomplish?
The whole point in much of Wicca is being close to the Gods. All the ritual we do, all the meditating we do—it’s about getting to the ecstatic state of being closer to the Source.
Do you want to start a meditation practice? Or how about doing more ritual each week? In creating a daily practice, you first have to figure out what you’re going to do.
Maybe you want to hone your magickal skills.
Here’s the first thing to consider: Start with something easy. Avoid setting yourself up to fail.
Start with something simple. You could do a simple candle lighting ceremony, for example.
How much time do you have?
Here’s the good news: Whatever time you have, you can make your Wiccan spiritual practice better.
Some examples:
1 minute – say a prayer or chant (out loud)
3 to 5 minutes – Have a brief meditation session.
30 minutes – Do a simple ritual. Perhaps, include a candle lighting ceremony and some meditation.
1 hour – Do a formal ritual.
The more time you have, the more you can do. Just remember to pace yourself.
Even if you have only a short time to spare, you can still get big benefits. How? Practice will help you hone whatever skill/discipline you are trying to work with.
Even doing a three-minute meditation session will bring you results over time.
How will you log it?
Logging your practice is crucial. If you do not log your actions, you really don’t know if you’re making any progress.
Some people use a diary. Diaries are great to log what you did, the duration of your practice, and what the outcome was.
What if you don’t like to write? No problem. You can use your smartphone to record your progress. You can pick an app to log your efforts.
Otherwise, you can simply mark a paper-based calendar on the days you successfully complete your practice.
Wiccans also find that having another Wiccan as your “accountability buddy” helps.
* * * * * *
In summary, you can accomplish much even with a short time—when you do things daily. Use The Three Elements to Improve Your Wiccan Practice.
“You okay, Moonwater? Are you sick?” my friend, Lisa, asked.
“I don’t know. The doctor took some skin from near my wrist. I’m waiting on a biopsy,” I replied.
Then, the next day, the doctor’s office left a voicemail for me — a vague message.
But such a fast return call promised bad news. I had to wait the whole weekend until I could get someone on the phone. The answer was … cancer.
Now the question was … did they cut away all of the cancerous cells? The afflicted spot was the size of a dime, and the doctor had used a dermablade to cut away a nickel-sized area.
Again—it was about waiting to find out.
Can you relate? Have you had anxiety waiting for news related to something you had no control over?
Let’s add depression to the mix of anxiety and cancer.
My depression symptoms already pushed me to see a bleak future. Now, with the cancer-diagnosis, my mind spiraled into dark corners. Fear, dread, pain.
So, what can we do to sooth these feelings?
Here are Three Practical Ways to Soothe Feelings of Dread:
Talk with Friends
You can circle the wagons with your friends/family.
You’ll want to be selective about with whom you share your difficult news. I even have a kind friend who prefers texting to talking on the phone. We had a good conversation.
Still, many of us find talking on the phone or visiting in-person to be more helpful.
Many times, your friends and family can be supportive and give you strength. This includes your coven mates if you are in a coven.
A select number of your friends can and will support you. You can lean on them when life gets tough.
Certain friends helped me see the light when depression only showed darkness.
My husband gave me a different perspective. He called the operation a “cancer event.” (I didn’t like this phrase.)
His point was that the operation was likely successful. So, the situation was over (like an event). He added, “Until the data is in, it’s good.” By this he meant, if you don’t have an indication otherwise, carry on as if you’re going to get good news. Sometimes, he calls it “postponing worry that might prove unnecessary.”
Some people may find this perspective useful at times.
One thing I like about my husband’s comment is that it’s about holding a positive thought and sending that positive thought as energy into the universe.
Pray to the God and Goddess
I talked a lot to the God and Goddess. I asked Them to postpone my worries until I had more information. They sat with me in my fear and comforted me. They quieted my fears.
I said, “Please let this be okay. Give me guidance. Let me have the strength to go through this situation.” I focused on these intentions with the God and Goddess. This provided me a whole different direction than my depression symptoms would have brought to me.
So, when you have a serious question with no answer and you feel anxious, talk to the God and Goddess. See if you feel a subtle shift inside. That would be the God and Goddess providing you subtle support.
Perform a Ritual
Do a simple candle ritual to calm and reassure yourself.
I find lighting a candle and asking for peace/faith/comfort really helps me.
You can say:
With this Candle
I honor You, God and Goddess
Please fill me with Light.
Lend me Your Might.
So Mote It Be.
May these above practices bring you comfort and healing.
“Moonwater was telling me about her weight loss program, and it sounded like something I could do that didn’t cost me more than the normal groceries I buy, anyway. I started with an egg omelet in the morning with mushrooms and spinach. … In two weeks, I lost 7 lbs. I had a couple of days of eating what I wanted but not overeating. Then right back to Goddess Style. I feel great and eat what the Goddess gives us.” – Denise Kopplinger

Thank you for helping me see I’m not some freak because of circumstances throughout my life that have caused the blocks, and that i need to stop hiding from or burying them and face them one step at a time. – Crystal Sparks

As I stood absolutely still, I held my breath. The technician did an X-ray of my whiplashed neck. I thought, “Why?! Why did I let it come to this?”
I had been rear-ended by a car just a short while before. A sedan car had cut me off. I brought my car to a gradual stop. The car driver behind me should have had ample time to come to a safe stop. But, No! Slam—she rear-ended my car.
Just great.
Here’s something worse. Some months ago, I thought, “I need to do a car blessing.”
Did I do it?
No.
That’s how I ended up placed against this X-ray machine.
So, I’ve written this Car Blessing for you and me to do better in life.
Car Blessing
What you will need:
Water
Salt
Lighter or matches
Bowl
Red candle
Sage bundle
Bless the water and salt. Put three pinches of salt into the water. Stir three times clockwise, and this holy water is now ready. Bless the sage bundle by lightly dabbing you fingers in the holy water and then asperge the bundle. Bless the flame of the red candle.
Dip your fingers into the bowl of holy water, asperge the car, and say:
I bless this car with Water and Earth that it remains safe from all harm.
Use the red candle flame to light the sage bundle. Waft the smoke over the car and say:
I bless this car with Air and Fire that it remains safe from all harm. Lord and Lady, may this car and its occupants be safe and free from any harm from outside and inside forces.

“I got nothing,” my friend, Joe, said, as we were doing a comedy improvisation exercise.
“I got nothing” is the classic comment that a comedian says when he or she gets stuck and cannot add anything to a moment of improvisation.
Improvisation is on my mind because many of us, Wiccans, say that “we got nothing” in terms of “I don’t have time to do a ritual. I’m busy!”
Does this sound familiar? I have the same problem in my life, too. Finding the time to do a whole ritual may not be practical every day or even once a week. There is a solution: You can “steal moments” of your day for the Gods and for your own sanity.
For example, I grabbed my husband and said a quick prayer to the Gods that we would land a client. Tonight, it’s worked. The new person said, “Yes,” and we have a new client.
Take a Moment and Light a Candle
Light a candle as a way to thank the Gods. I light offerings often to thank the Gods for Their help.
Recite A Chant
Here’s a chant:
Thank you Lord and Lady for today. May all good things come my way.
This doesn’t take long. Still, the effect can be profound. When you devote a moment to gratitude, it shifts your perception. Yes, you DO have things to be grateful for.
In summary, think of a quick prayer, lighting a candle or reciting a chant. These are some ways to “crowbar” in some time into your busy day.

Working with candles provides a great way to ease into magick. Such work can be simple yet powerful. Wiccans often use Chime candles for spellwork. These candles are specifically used for candle magick. Although spellcasters can use other candles, I suggest that you start with Chime candles. You can find them in metaphysical shops or online.
So, once you have some Chime candles, you can use the color guide below to select a color that is appropriate for your spell.
Let’s begin with the meanings of the different candle colors.
Note that the following list is not the final word on color. For instance, the color blue may have another meaning to you than the one listed here. Remember that your mind is your greatest tool. Trust your instincts when your feelings about a specific color differ from what others may advise you.
Here is a list of colors and a brief summary of their general attributes.
Black: decrease, death, revenge, retribution, contacting the dead
Note:I strongly recommend that you never use a black candle. The exceptions are at Samhain or when talking to the dead. Remember the Law of Three [Avoid doing things that harm others].
A candle that has been used for a specific purpose should never be used for a different purpose. Also, it is preferable to burn down the candle all the way. Try to do this in one session. Otherwise, it is acceptable to use the same candle again—but only for the same spell.
*****
Charging Your Candle
After you choose the candle with an appropriate color, you will then cleanse and consecrate your candle.
After Casting Circle, you hold the object and sprinkle holy water upon it (the process of asperging). Say: I cleanse you by Earth and Water
Using Smoke Arising from Incense
Waft the object through the smoke arising from Blessed Incense. By the way, wafting the object through smoke is the process of charging the object.
As you waft the object through smoke three times, say: I bless and consecrate you by Fire and Air
You have made the object suitable for use in your spellwork.
*****
Now it is time to dress your candle. You can use olive oil or a specific oil that helps your spell. For example, you can use Money Drawing Oil for a money spell.
How to Dress a Candle
What do I mean by dress a candle? This is when you rub the candle with oil.
You can use many different types of oils, available at your local metaphysical shop or online. If you don’t know which oil to use, simply start with virgin olive oil.
How to Rub the Oil on Your Candle
If you’re trying to draw something to you, rub from the tip (wick end) to the base of the candle. This motion draws what you want towards you. To push something away from you (like getting rid of a cold), rub the oil from the base to the wick.
*****
Now place your candle in an appropriate candle holder on a heat proof surface (usually on an altar). Focus on what you want the candle to do for you. Hold your hands over the candle as you do this. Next, either express a chant for your spell or light the candle. Meditate on your desire as you watch the flame. Stay with your candle until it burns itself out. It is important to let the candle burn out completely. This seals the spell.

“This doesn’t make sense. Fred was such a good man. Why did he die so young?” my friend Danny asked me.
“I grieve with you. Just saying the usual words probably won’t help right now,” I began.
Later in our conversation, we talked about reincarnation. My view is: we are all here to learn lessons. With the view of reincarnation, all things fit together. For example, a child, who dies at six-years-old, can return and have another lifetime in which she grows up, gets married and has many adventures.
Still, it’s hard to endure one’s own suffering and even feelings of anguish when loved ones are suffering. Let’s take it even further: Why do the Gods allow innocent children to die in tsunamis or other situations?
Here is a possible explanation: In the Summerlands, before we incarnate we gather with other souls. We agree on helping each other to learn our lessons in the next incarnation. You might say that, together, we come up with a plan before our next incarnation.
It breaks my heart to hear of people dying in a disaster. Then I hear one of my friends say, “That disaster just reminded me how life is short and how we need to cherish each other in what little time we have.”
In the Summerlands, some souls agree to go through hardship in order to help us learn lessons that we couldn’t learn by ourselves. Some lessons only hit home when extreme things happen. Some souls agree to help others learn compassion. Other souls want to help us learn how to come back from tragedy. Additionally, I noticed that there is a certain type of comfort that can only be experienced when a friend is comforting another person who is reeling from tragedy.
You can do simple rituals to deal with suffering.

As a Wiccan I found this an inspiring read. Written in a way that makes it accessible to everyone irrespective of their current knowledge. – Shona Cathro
I don’t generally write reviews on books I’ve read…but this time i feel lead to. This book spoke volumes to me, as if the author knew exactly where I’m coming from and what I’m struggling with. It’s not often a book can make me cry, but this one did by making me see the many blocks I’ve put up in my life. I knew they were there, but I’ve gotten skilled at pretending they’re not. Thank you for helping me see I’m not some freak because of circumstances throughout my life that have caused the blocks, and that i need to stop hiding from or burying them and face them one step at a time. – Crystal Sparks
