“Why do you wear that pentagram talisman, Moonwater?” my friend, Stephanie, asked.
“Protection,” I replied.
“From what?” she asked.
Sometimes, I get surprised. In years past, I talked to her about how my brother terrorized me when he was 10 and I was 7. He held me underwater in a neighbor’s swimming pool. I was sure that I would drown.
Later, Wicca helped me become strong enough to leave an abusive marriage.
So you’d think that she’d understand that I definitely want protection from any other tough things happening as I journey through life.
So I wear my pentagram talisman 24/7.
I feel that my talisman has protected me from near-collisions on freeways in Los Angeles. Also, the talisman heightened my awareness so I was able to avoid a speeding bus as I walked in San Francisco.
Amulets and Talismans—what’s the difference? Amulets are found objects like four-leafed clovers. Talismans are man-made objects that are charged. You can make a talisman out of anything that’s natural. Don’t use man-made substances (plastic or otherwise).
How to Prepare Your Talisman
When you want to wear your protection, a talisman is ideal. You can make your talisman (that’s the best). Or you could purchase one, and make sure you cleanse it of all energies before you start your ritual (see below).
Cleanse your talisman by placing it in a container of salt, making sure you have your talisman completely buried. Leave it buried under a full moon for three days. Say a simple chant like “I cleanse you of all energies, and I cleanse you under the silver moon.”
Charging Your Talisman
First, be sure to charge your talisman during the waxing moon.
Cast circle in the usual way.
Cense and Spurge the talisman. Dance to raise power while holding the talisman and place the energy into the talisman.
Now put the talisman on the pentagram of your altar and place your hands on top of both. Focus on the talisman and say this incantation:
I summon, stir and call you up, old and ancient powers of the Sun, Moon and Stars!
I summon, stir and call you up, old and ancient powers of the planets Mars, Venus and Jupiter!
I summon, stir and call you up, old and ancient powers of the planets Saturn, Mercury and Uranus!
I summon, stir and call you up, old and ancient powers of the North, South, East and West!
I summon, stir and call you up, old and ancient powers of the elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water!
I evoke you to place upon this talisman your strong powers of light and good, so that I may be protected always.
And that this talisman will work for good and will repel all ill luck and disasters away from me!
I _(your name)_ will this so! So mote it be!
Do the Cakes and Wine Ceremony.
Close your Circle in the usual fashion.
Consider bringing the power of a talisman into your life.
Blessings,

I often get complimented on my “medallions” when I go out wearing my tree of life pentacle and Cernunnos pendant. It always strikes me as an odd choice of words. I don’t think of them as medallions at all. They are talismans.
