“What is the most important thing to remember when you do magick?” my friend, Lisa, asked.
“The intention is the most important thing,” I replied.
“How is that? Aren’t words important?”
“Yes, they are.”
“Okay, I’m confused,” she said.
Are you concerned about how magick works?
Here are four essential parts of creating an effective spell.
- Intention
Intention is the first thing to consider. If you are not sure about what you want to accomplish, then your spell will not work. Your intention is the whole point for doing the spell. What do you intend? What do you want to accomplish with your spell?
- Words
Words help guide your intention. They create a map of how to do what it is you want the spell to accomplish. You must use specific words to get something done. Magic takes the path of least resistance. If you wanted to lose weight and you were not specific, you might become physically ill. Many people would agree that getting physically ill is a terrible and temporary way to lose weight.
You need to be specific in your choice of words. Perhaps, you may choose to say something like: “I lose weight by proper nutrition and exercise so that I maintain my health and get to a truly healthy weight for me.”
Remember to include an ending clause like “For this or better, and it harm none.”
- Ingredients
As you create your spell, carefully select the ingredients or items you use. Each ingredient has its own energy, also known as the natural object’s virtue. Natural items have their own virtues that lend their powers to your spell.
- Will
Sometimes, I say, “Will is the fuel that makes the spell ‘go.’” The Collins English Dictionary defines willpower as “the ability to control oneself and determine one’s actions.”
Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., author of The Willpower Instinct, wrote: “Willpower is about harnessing the three powers of I will, I won’t and I want to help you to achieve your goals (and stay out of trouble).”
When it comes to successfully performing magick, willpower, to me, means the driving force of desire for some form of change. So, I focus on the power of “I will.” This is an important distinction because many people think of willpower as only the ability to avoid temptation.
Realize that you need to will something into being. This includes confidence that what you are doing shall work. If you don’t have that, your spell just won’t be effective.
You need your will for your intention to be as strong as possible. This is why when we are desperate for something, we can usually manifest it. Using your will is deeply rooted in your desire.
In summary, devote care and attention to the essential items of Intention, Words, Ingredients, and Will.
May these insights support your spiritual path.
