“Tell me about your first experiences with magick,” my friend, Alexie, asked.
“I was 7 years old, and I spontaneously set up an altar in the woods near my home,” I replied.
“I saw some birds gather. A feeling of love washed over me. I realize now that I was connecting with the natural energies of the earth and the God and Goddess,” I said.
I have three insights for you.
- Honor the Craft and the experience of wielding magick
I appreciate the term “magick” because it is a clear distinction that is different from “magic” as connected to “stage magic.” Stage Magicians like David Copperfield, Doug Henning, David Blaine, and Penn & Teller use “stage magic” to conduct illusions or tricks that the audience finds entertaining.
On the other hand, magick is a sacred practice. We, witches, use magick to change our inner and outer worlds. Witches use the natural energies of the Earth, Sun, planets, spirits, deities, and themselves to change those worlds.
With our careful and appropriate practice of magick, we elevate our daily lives.
- Magick requires practice and patience.
It’s a process to develop your skills in magick and spellcraft. You raise energy and direct it toward a goal. Raising energy may include singing, chanting, and/or dancing. Magick requires you to use precise language and do things in a certain order. It is helpful for you to log your progress. And that includes the need for patience.
- Remember to hold to appropriate ethics regarding magick.
“Ethics are moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity.” – Oxford Languages
The ethics of magick include:
- Do NOT perform magick on anyone without their permission. (This even includes a healing spell.)
- Avoid negative practices and intentions related to magick. (The Three Times Law holds that you could get a three-fold backlash upon you for negative energy you place into the universe.)
- Remember the Wiccan Rede: “An’ ye harm none, do what ye will.”
May these insights support your path.

I’ve been practicing magick since the mid-1990s and have an incredible life. It’s all an energy force. I like what you wrote about not performing magic on anyone. I’ve had people, over the years, tell me to help them. They have to understand, the power is within your own hand.

Maryanne,
About your comment, “I’ve been practicing magick since the mid-1990s”. That’s around how long I have been practicing as well. I agree with what you said, ” the power is within your own hand.” It truly is. Which is one of the reasons I don’t do magick for others. Thank you for your comment.
Blessed be,
Moonwater
