“You look frustrated,” my friend, Susan, said. “Got that right,” I replied. “About…?” “I just can’t get in more meditation sessions,” I said.
Later, I reflected on this. So, we hear that improving our lives is just about adding a habit. (As if that were easy.)
Ever put in a new habit and in 47 days—poof!—the habit is gone?
Frustrating, right? What’s the answer?
It’s not just a change of habit. It’s a shift of identity.
Robert Rodriguez, the film director, said that he would throw out his back every time he made a film. He asked Sylvester “Sly” Stallone how he managed to stay strong and athletic. Sly said, “Get a personal trainer.”
But then, Robert had a revelation. Yes, it was good to have the support of a personal trainer. AND, he needed to shift his identity to “athlete.” Then it was about “what does an athlete do?”
We, witches, can choose layers to our identity.
I can choose and say firmly, “I AM a meditator.”
In fact … I’m taking a pause …
Now, I am back.
Guess what I just did?
I did a brief meditation session. Why? “I AM a meditator.”
What identity would you like to add to your practice as a Witch?
Here’s a prayer.
Goddess, show me the way to transformation. Guide my actions on my desired path. So Mote It Be.
As witches, many of us have been pushed down and even reviled.
Here I want to share some ideas that startled me.
I was talking with a friend recently. He had just read a screenwriting book by a man with dyslexia.
My friend felt stunned. He read a book by a man who had not read all the screenwriting books due to his dyslexia. Still, the book author earns a good living as a screenwriter.
And Bonus: the dyslexic screenwriter’s book was … wait for it … easy to read.
My friend said, “This author transformed a limit into limitless.’”
That phrase sticks with me.
I have three insights for you:
Work with the limit and find new possibilities.
First, we look at “what’s a limit?” It’s a perception. At about 10 years old, I had the feeling that I’d like to be a writer. But year after year, teachers would use “the red pen of death” upon my papers. They said that I needed many writing classes. It was so hard to read.
The teachers did nothing to show me that one can be a writer while dealing with dyslexia.
They said nothing about the separation between “writing, editing and proofreading.”
As I got “Ds” and “Fs,” I thought, “How am I supposed to do anything with this?”
In 2012, the Gods repeatedly gave me intuitive thoughts. It was not a sentence in my mind. Instead, it was Their message to me—sent as a feeling. “Start a blog.”
Huge fear gripped me. I talked about this with friends, and I said, “Dyslexic. Hello!”
How could I start a blog?
How would I write material that was clear enough?
I needed help. So, my sweetheart and friends said that they would help me.
And this leads up to the next step …
Discover truth in collaboration.
What is truth in collaboration? It’s different in each individual and each particular situation.
I notice that intuition provides different answers to different people.
For example, I know two screenwriters. They’re good collaborative partners. One talks a lot! He’s good at writing dialogue. The other one comes up with a compelling, big idea for a story. Together, they push each other to make the writing better.
When do witches collaborate? They talk to each other about spells and magickal techniques. They share what has worked for them as individuals.
Coven members often work together. They help each other learn and grow. When you work in a coven, it helps when the coven members specialize in different areas. For example, one may focus on herbs. Another specializes in The Tarot. A different member might emphasize potions. (Warning: Always take special care about anything that may be ingested.)
The truth is because I’m dyslexic, I’ve needed to collaborate with others. It’s helped me improve as a writer and grow deeper as a person.
My thoughts about “transform a limit into limitless” include:
If you asked me 10 years ago if I could imagine writing and doing podcast episodes, I would have said, “Other people can do that. Not me.”
Now, I know that collaboration is a sound path to travel.
Experience true collaboration with the Gods
Where do great ideas come from? They come from within you and from the Gods. The Gods give us the intuition and the knowing.
What was a good idea that popped up in your thoughts? How did you experience this?
Sometimes, we really do receive inspiration from the Gods. I’ve noticed that you will repeatedly receive the idea. It just does not leave you alone.
Does the good idea point you in the direction of doing something positive that will help others?
Earlier in this post, I talked about how the Gods pressed me to write a blog.
I didn’t think it was possible. But I got help. Soon not only did I grow as a person and as a writer, but I also helped others.
This is how the Gods can collaborate with you. They can guide you, so you do things that uplift your life and the lives of others.
You may want to gain clarity by also using divinatory tools like The Tarot. Consider meditation to open a communication channel with the Gods. Have Them guide you. This is how They can help you on your path. Additionally, this is a great way to collaborate with Them.
“I’m stuck. I keep ruminating on how that person betrayed me,” my friend, Leena, said. “If I could just get past this—get beyond this.”
I listened with concern for my friend.
Becoming a High Priestess, I worked for years to learn oath-bound rituals to transcend my earthly concerns. It took a lot of work, but with private rituals, I have discovered how to deeply connect with the Goddess.
Wicca is a path of transcendence, which refers to “existence or experience beyond the normal or physical level.”
Beyond the normal … are we referring to positive or negative experiences?
Perhaps, like me, you’ve experienced some downright horrible events in your life. The good news is that, through Wicca, we can move beyond darkness to that which includes love and light. We have the power to use magick, and we can invite the God and Goddess to help us rise above the darkness of our negative past experiences.
Maybe, you’ve heard the term transformation a number of times. To transform however is to change in character or condition.
I have looked upon transformation as something that requires a lot of effort.
Remember, transcendence is something different. As we noted, it is beyond the normal or physical level. Think of it like this: Transcendence can happen in an instant. For example, some time ago, in the middle of one of my meditation sessions, the God and Goddess appeared to me. This was not something I “forced” or “transformed.” Instead, it was an experience that just manifested. I flowed into beyond the normal or physical.
So, what does this all boil down to?
Transcendence is something you invite, and you do not force.
Here is a prayer that you can use to create transcendence in your life by changing bad experiences into good emotions.
Transcendence Prayer
By love and light, By Old Ones’ might! I ask for Transcendence of my (name of difficulty) in Your Name. May You take it and make it tame. That You turn it into love and light, So I will be all right! Let there be a shift in me, from darkness into light. Let transcendence lift me and take flight. By all the powers of the Sun, Moon and in Old Ones’ Name, Keep me safe and keep me sane. Keep me above the dark waters that I tread within my mind. Let me leave my heartache and sorrow behind. Create growth for me and my life with no end. Through every hill and bend. Pain and fear from (name of difficulty) abate, So I have only a good fate. This (name of difficulty) does not define me! It does not hinder or take me! The love of the Lord and Lady ever fills me, As I so will, So Mote It Be!
May this prayer carry you forward and help you transcend that which held you back.
“Fear can be a Source for magick-working?” my friend, Jeff, asked.
“Yes,” I replied.
“I don’t understand. I’ve heard that if you focus on what you fear too much, you’ll even attract what you fear,” Jeff said. His brows furrowed. It looked like he was making himself afraid by even voicing this thought.
What is fear?
It may seem to be too simple to ask this question. Sure, all of us feel fear sometimes. Still, let’s start here: the Merriam-Webster dictionary describes fear as: an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.
Dealing with clinical depression, I find fear to be my everyday companion. I have fears about having enough income in the future, close relatives dying, and more.
I’ve learned that I need to do something to get out of the rut of fear.
How can we harness fear?
I’ve learned that fear can be useful. It’s like a warning light (on a pilot’s flight deck) that alerts me to danger.
We evolved to be predisposed to fear. Let’s face it: Those ancestors who saw a saber-toothed tiger, became afraid, and stayed away from it, survived to pass down their genes. Those of our ancestors who saw the saber-toothed tiger and said, “Nice kitty,” didn’t.
So, fear is hardwired into our DNA.
This is good to know. We can use this hardwiring to our advantage.
How?
Fear is like a sign that points to what you truly value. Say we have a fear of being alone. This fear of being alone may indicate that you value having friends and family close by.
I fear homelessness. This could indicate that I value comfort and stability.
Finding your fear sign will help you find your way to your true path. Whenever you have fear about something, ask yourself, “Is this my fear sign?”
To Make Fear a Positive Source of Your Magick …
If you know your fear sign, you can use it to work magick.
How?
In one of my workshops, I had the attendees do a Transform Fear Meditation.
The idea was to start with a physical object in your mind to represent the fear.
Then you imagine the physical object crumbling away like an outer shell to reveal what you value hidden inside.
You can use other forms of meditation.
The questions to use include: “What is fear trying to tell you?” and “What path are you to take?”
Look deep. Ask yourself, “What is the fear pointing to?”
For example, one could ask, “What are you afraid of?
Public speaking.
What’s that fear pointing to?
“I’m afraid of forgetting my words.”
What’s that fear pointing to?
I’m afraid of being embarrassed.
What’s that fear pointing to?
I’m afraid of feeling like a piece of garbage.
Turn this Around. What is the opposite of that fear?
I want to feel good in my heart. I want to feel that I matter and that I contribute something good to the world.
Now, you have a Powerful Intention to Use as a Source of Your Magick!
Next, you can do a Spell to Boost Your Self-Esteem.
Or you could light a candle and say, Lord and Lady, guide me To strengthen myself So I feel good about what I’m doing. Help me to contribute Something good to this world. So Mote It Be.
In summary, the idea is to avoid staying in the rut of fear.
Instead, use the fear to point you to a Positive Intention, that is, what you truly value.
Then, have your spellwork focus on what you truly value.
