Are the Gods Angry?

As you see the broadcast news or news reported online, are you empathizing with people running from Southern Florida to save their lives?

Do you pause and ask what’s going on here?

Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on Texas. Now, Hurricane Irma, while at Category 5, stomped Barbuda. Irma now stalks Southern Florida—soon to make landfall. Mexico just endured an earthquake, considered the worst in centuries.

Wiccans I know are getting impressions during meditation that the God and Goddess are upset.

A number of experts suggest that global warming has a role in causing these severe hurricanes. Peter Spinks wrote, in his post, Global Warming Changing Tilt of Earth’s Spin Axis: “Having once tilted towards Canada, the polar axis is now drifting towards Britain at roughly 16 centimeters a year, the NASA measurements reveal.”

Some Wiccans suggest that the God and Goddess are showing their anger in how They are not moderating the devastation of hurricanes. The God and Goddess appear fed up with our pollution and carelessness for the Earth.

So, what can we do?

As witches, we are truly connected to our environment. We can feel the tides of the Earth changing. The seasons are not as they were before. As Peter Spinks mentioned, the earth is literally changing its axis.

Start with something simple.
Clean up our Great Mother whenever and wherever you can. Join the effort at litterproject.com. Or donate to help preserve the forests: conservation.org and animals: worldwildlife.org. Or pick another favorite organization.

Each of us can contribute to the efforts to undo the mess. We need to take responsibility for our actions.

As Wiccans, we have a connection to the God and Goddess. We can make amends and curb our destructive behavior.

We can actually deepen our connection with the God and Goddess. We can help Them in our efforts to take care of our home, the Earth.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

Wiccan Way to Better Health

vegies

Would you like to drop excess weight? I’m on this path now. I’m grateful to say that I have lost at least 11.4 pounds in four weeks. What’s my secret?

I’m approaching this process with Wicca helping me all the way.

I have magick on my side, and I talked about that in my previous post. This is a great start.

Additionally, the other secret weapons are my diet and my walking. During my experience thus far, I’m not even hungry.

“What’s she eating?” you might ask.

Veggies and protein. Lots of veggies. No sugar and no carbs. That’s no bread, pasta, tortillas, rice or beans. It sounds rough, but it’s really not. How?

I can eat bacon and still lose weight. Yum! I can have cheese and other things that you would normally not think of as “diet” food.

How is this a Wiccan way? I eat only things that come out the ground or from a womb. Just as nature intended. I stick to the foods of the earth. Yes, I know wheat is from the ground, but it is usually processed into bread and other things. I just stay away from carbs. Usually carbs are processed. I am eating things that have not been processed, and that’s the key.

For example, for breakfast I can have an apple and peanut butter (only peanuts with salt—no sugar that is found in a leading brand) with stir-fried veggies.

Tip: Use the bacon grease for the oil to fry the veggies. This makes them bacon flavored! (As with all diet plans and exercise plans, be sure to check with your doctor before starting any kind of restrictive diet. For example, if you have cholesterol problems, you may want to skip the bacon.)

I am eating the treasures of the earth and losing weight. I eat eggs, chicken and fish. My diet is now mostly vegetables. When possible, I like to eat vegetables from local suppliers. This helps with the sustainability of the planet.

I like helping Mother Earth and losing weight at the same time!
How about you?

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

In Just One Moment, Connect with Goddess

Lily2

“I was so happy a day ago,” my friend Anna said.

“I hear a ‘but’ coming up,” I said.

“But then I found out my project is going to cost three times more,” she said.

“That sounds tough to hear,” I replied. “What were you happy about?”

“Our project had a new donor,” she continued, “But now, we’re stuck.”

I empathize with Anna’s situation.

The strange thing I notice is that Anna did not immediately invoke her Wiccan knowledge. Why did that happen?

You see, your ordinary, daily life is NOT separate from your spiritual life.

What could Anna do—in just a moment or two—to help her feel the Goddess’s love?

  1. Turn Your Thoughts to Goddess

Shift to your feelings and thoughts about what you’re grateful for. Use this chant:

Gracious Lady of the Moon,
I thank you now for this boon.

  1. Light a Candle per day

You can light a candle as an offering to express your gratitude for what you do have.

On the first day, Anna could have lit a candle to express her gratitude for the project donation.

On the second day, Anna could light a candle for Goddess’s Guidance.

Use this chant:

Goddess,
I don’t know what to do.

Grant me strength to find a solution.
Guide me with Your Divine Inspiration.

Grant me strength to find a solution.
Guide me with Your Divine Inspiration.

Grant me strength to find a solution.
Guide me with Your Divine Inspiration.

So Mote It Be.

The third day would be time to do an offering after what you want has manifested.

  1. Find some humor.

When we do things, we’ll face some resistance.

I was talking with a friend recently and we came up with this little phrase:

Goddess,
I thank you now
I thank you later
Do what You will
to straighten out this hater.

My friend and I laughed about this one.

Remember, you can connect with Goddess in just one moment.

Blessed Be,
Moonwater

What Pagans Know

DeadTrees

When I arrived at Pinecrest campground, I looked forward to hiking through the pine trees until . . . my heart broke, seeing all of the dying trees.

Sure, we Californians complain about cutting back on our water consumption amid cries of “Drought!”
But I did not feel it in my gut until I saw all the brown, dying trees.

The trees all over California are dying.

What does this have to do with Wicca?

We can notice that the human race, for the most part, has neglected our Sacred Mother Earth. Many have ignored the God and the Goddess or downright forgotten about Them.

Mother Earth is sick, and we need to come to Her aid. What can we do?

We can protect her. Walking, bicycling, carpooling when possible. My sweetheart often takes the train and avoids commuting by car. Be sure to recycle and consider eating locally grown food.

We can also gather with others and organize a clean-up Mother Earth day or afternoon. Then you would pick up trash at beaches, forests, or even your own neighborhood.

I believe we need to fight global warming on a personal level, and in groups. Small actions do make a difference.

In one of my previous blog articles , I talk about how a friend and I cleaned up a big mess left by previous campers. It really bothered me that those individuals thought they could leave their trash and waste anywhere they pleased. They took no responsibility for their actions.

Pagans know better. My friend and I went into immediate action and cleaned up the campsite. The rangers were quite happy to provide us with bags to assist our “be kind to Mother Earth” actions.

Now I invite you to get involved on some level.

Let us, Pagans, lead by example.

Let’s show others on this beautiful Mother Earth how to be good stewards with the gifts we have been given.

Talking to Claudia

Opening up to New Ideas

Opening up to New Ideas

“I don’t want to make a mistake. I’m new to spellwork,” Claudia said.

Shifting the phone to my other ear, I thought, “I can empathize with this because I went through it, too.”

Years ago, when I first began with Wicca, I was really concerned about doing Wicca correctly from the start. It was very important for me to honor the God and Goddess appropriately.

Claudia asked, “How do I do dedication ceremony? It seems like there are a lot of ways to do it, depending on what kind of Traditions [Trads] are out there.”

“It’s true that there are many different types of dedication ceremonies,” I began. “Many have valuable parts and there’s no one and only way to do a dedication ceremony.”

Wicca includes various rituals that a practitioner may do. Rituals can be incredibly complex to quite simple depending on your tastes. Do you like complex and complicated or do you prefer the more simple types of rituals? The best thing that I can say is whatever you do, do it from your heart. That is what pleases the Gods.

I continued by sharing my own journey and how I chose one of the oldest Trads for learning the basics.

Consider Which Witch is Which to get an overview of the different Trads out there.

Claudia then asked about casting of a circle and why people enter from the East and leave from the West. I answered, “We start in the East, in the direction of the sunrise. Then you walk around deosil (clockwise or sun-wise) untill you end up back in the East. West is the direction of Death so you exit that way. When you make a circle starting in the East, it comes around to the East again, making a ‘door.’”

Think of the cycle of life and death. We are born just like the sun each day. And then the wheel turns untill we end up at death, when the sun goes down or “dies.”

Then Claudia asked about which colors are appropriate to use for your circle. You can use white. Or you can use colors that correspond to the four directions:

  • North – green or brown
  • South – red
  • East – yellow
  • West – blue

For more information about rituals, consider my blog article “Why do Wiccans Do Ritual?”

If you want even more information, I have lots of good info for beginners in my book The Hidden Children of the Goddess.

“How do I find a good mentor?” Claudia asked and I shared with her information found in my blog post: Finding the Right Wiccan Mentor for You.

Another way to find a mentor is attending PantheaCon, a Pagan conference that takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area each February. Many different practitioners of Paganism (including Wicca) attend. You can then check out and ask about the different Trads, and learn from the practitioners themselves. You can check out the website of PantheaCon  It would be fun to talk with you if we meet there. I often attend.

You can also find local mentors through Covenant of the Goddess.

I hope you find the above resources to be useful.

Blessings,

Moonwater SilverClaw

The Importance of Mentoring and the Experience

The Altar

I placed the bowl of salt on the altar and then, gently, my mentor moved my hand to the left. Just then, I had the instinctive feeling that the bowl of salt was now in the right place.

I’ve found that having a mentor brings out an aspect of Wicca that one cannot find in a book.

Imagine trying to learn to swim without getting in the water.

Similarly, did you learn to ride a bicycle with no one next you? Learning to ride a bicycle is a good metaphor related to rising to higher levels of Wiccan practice.

You could read a book about a bicycle or watch other people riding bicycles, but that is not the same as having a mentor guide you.

When my dad taught me to ride a bicycle, he was there offering advice and helping me right the bicycle when I took a couple of spills.

Wicca is an experiential process. A mentor can guide you in a progression of experiences so that you learn at a good pace and have successful experiences along the way.

The idea of being a mentor means so much to me that I’m now completing a video in which I talk directly with the viewer and show the process of a number of meditations. I provide guided meditations—this is a prime example of when a mentor can provide an experience to help the viewer go deeper in his or her practice.

Consider ways to bring a mentor or mentors into your journey.

You’ll make progress faster and enjoy the journey more.

Blessings,

Moonwater SilverClaw

Secret of How to do Magick

What Makes People Believe?

What Makes People Believe?

Secret of How to do Magick

When I first started doing magick it was really hit or miss, most often mess. My spell work was just not as effective as I wanted it to be. What was I doing wrong?

If you have wondered the same thing, you have probably done similar mistakes. For example, I’d do a money spell, but I’d just get new problems!

The real problem was, like many people, I just wanted a big payday. What I didn’t know was that this is really the wrong way to approach a lack of money.

Many, if not most, spells written today are focused on the external opportunities or even requesting gifts from the Gods. Focusing on just the external can create new problems.

What if I could tell you a Secret of how to do magick – in a way where your avoid ethics issues about money?

I have mentored a number of people about this Secret. Now I will share with you this Secret.

A phrase from the poem by Doreen Valiente entitled The Charge of the Goddess tells us how to do magick well. But many of us, like my younger self, just don’t see it. The line I’m talking about is: “…that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without thee.”

This line invites us to look within as we approach our magickal work.

Instead of focusing on how to get money from outside sources, focus within. How? Instead of asking for a handout from the universe, ask, “How I can create more energy in myself to obtain my desire? How can I make myself open to more prosperity?”

Let’s get more specific. You have been laid off and need a new job pronto! Bills are pilling up fast.

Let’s use a sigil for this purpose. (You can learn more about sigils in my sigils post.) Remember the Gods are here to help. You can call on them for inner strength.

How to phrase a sentence for a sigil to get a job:

  • All blocks I have put up, known and unknown, dissolve so I am a good candidate and my future employer hires me.
  • Help me express the inner strength, skills and energy so I can acquire a job of my liking.

Here are phrases for those who have an interest in an entrepreneurial path:

  • I find new ways to serve others successfully so money comes to me naturally.
  • All blocks I have put up, known and unknown, dissolve so I can create abundance in my life.

Can you see how each sentence or phrase focuses on inner change, not the external “give me, give me”? With these phrases you are not looking for a handout. You are creating the abundance by changing you.

This can be applied to the rest of your magick as well. Another example is love spells. Focus your magick on being more loving, or more open to love. Never do love spells upon a particular person. Instead do a spell to attract love to you in whatever form is appropriate by creating yourself as more loving.

By focusing on inner change and developing our inner strengths, we can achieve our desires.

Blessings,

Moonwater SilverClaw

House Gods

Timmy

House Gods

When my friend Janet introduced me to her House Goddess, “Phyllis,” I was immediately intrigued. How would it feel to have a spiritual being watching over your home and protecting you and your loved ones?

Many cultures focus on House Gods who protect the home in some form. There’s Cofgodas in Anglo-Saxon Paganism and Gasin in Korea. Lares, from ancient Rome, protects the home.

Some House Gods just take care of certain rooms. Others oversee certain activities done in a particular room.

My House God’s name is Timmy. That’s unusual in that House Gods tend to be female. Timmy protects my home and my loved ones who reside there. Like a divine watch dog, he keeps mischief at bay. He keeps us safe from negative entities who may wander by.

Many readers may want to invite a House God into their home.

Good news! They’re most likely already there.

So how do you entice your House God to take his or her job more seriously?

Make them offerings, of course.

Here is how I began my relationship with Timmy.

I got a statue that I liked. (House Gods tend to take residence in an object.) I found mine at the Northern California Renaissance Pleasure Fair but you can find your object anywhere.

My statue is also a candle holder, which is a plus for offering candles. And it has the added coolness that the cat eyes glow when you place the candle in the statue.

I placed the statue in a prominent place in my home and then asked that the House God come forward. I invited Timmy to protect my home and all my loved ones who reside in it. And in turn I would honor him by offering him this statue, and I would give him candles with my thanks.

I lit the candle and asked him if this was acceptable. I said, “If you agree, please blink to confirm your answer is ‘yes.’” He “blinked” by flickering the fire. That’s how our conversation began.

When you start a relationship with your House God, he or she will diligently continue with the protection job. Just make sure to give him or her offerings to say thank you.

Do you already have a House God? Tell me about your experiences in the comments section below.

Blessings,

How Wicca Values Wisdom

Elders Lead The Way

How Wicca Values Wisdom

Have you ever felt bothered by how media pushes that people need to be “young and beautiful”?

You may have noticed that Wicca pushes back against media in that Wicca honors and respects our elders.

Have you also noticed how the Western World seems to overlook the merits of tempered wisdom and instead favors youth?

Wicca acknowledges that for our species, youth is life. Youth is fertility and health. Wicca also acknowledges that, as one lives, wisdom can blossom. Wisdom arose as early people learned which berries were safe to eat and what plants could heal. With wisdom we not only survived, we thrived. Wicca acknowledges the value of both youth and elders’ wisdom. Elders have traveled the path of life ahead of us. They can help us do better on our personal path if we care to listen.

Just like youthful strong bodies can get hard work done, elders have the wisdom of knowing how to work smart.

This is important for survival.

In past eras, without the wisdom of the elders, people couldn’t survive. Because of this we valued our elders.

However, as time passed, we notice that technology appears to make elders’ advice and experience less relevant. With life moving as fast as it does, many of us would rather read something on the Internet, than talk to an elder. I get that. I love tech; I’m a blogger after all. But with all the bells and whistles technology has, we still need our humanity for us to really learn.

It’s like reading about the Titanic disaster in a book as opposed to actually talking with a survivor who lived through the experience. The survivor will be able to tell you the visceral experience they had along with other crucial information that a book just can’t convey.

We pick up so much in nonverbal cues: The look on a person’s face, the tonality of their voice, and the pace in which they speak.

Think of it: Storytelling has been such a valuable part of humanity’s life. We learn so much because we actually experience the truth of a situation while we experience a person telling a story.

In the Western World we have forgotten the important distinction of experience versus merely reading some facts conveyed in a barren form on the Internet.

The good news is: Wiccans — like a number of Eastern cultures — have retained wisdom. As Wiccans, we understand that we need both the vitality and virility of youth, but it must be tempered with wisdom and knowledge for survival and even enhancing one’s path in life.

Wiccans know that to travel a spiritual path you need wisdom to know where to tread and where not to tread. Elders can talk with you about life, if not current technology. They can talk with you about the people who make technology. They can provide the patience and understanding about tough issues like loss and grief. They can even help you appreciate the joys of life.

I invite you to consider elders as another resource. They can guide you in ways that something you read just can’t.

Wiccans know that there is more to life than tech. Some wisdom and learning only comes from having lived through tough experiences.

See how you might connect with appropriate elders.

You’ll find new facets of life opening to you.

Blessed Be,
