“That Emily is so mean!” a friend, Alicia, said.
“How are you protecting yourself?” I asked.
This began an important conversation about dealing with toxic people.
I have three insights for you.
Having a reliable shielding routine is important. How many people are you in contact with every day? In a bus or in a car next to you. At work or school.
It is likely many of these people are upset about something. You do not want any of that toxic energy clinging to you.
Having a shielding practice can help you repel that unwanted, negative energy. For more about shielding, click here.
I have learned that dealing with toxic people is not only about being “tough.” The point is toxic people can drain people’s energy. The solution includes a) practice shielding and b) develop your own practices that build your personal reserve of energy.
With a reserve of energy, you can think clearly and act effectively.
Every week, have your own energy renewal rituals and routines. These are prayer, rituals, and meditations. Walking in nature, exercise, and good nutrition also build up your reserve of energy. These activities restore your energy. In this way, you can have a store of energy when tough times and negative people turn up in your life.
As we talked about… toxic people drain energy! So, turn to the God and Goddess for renewing your energy and for wisdom.
Here is a prayer:
Goddess of the Moon,
Grant me the wisdom to do actions that restore my energy.
Empower me and renew me so I have a reserve of energy.
When facing toxic people, may Your Love and Wisdom guide me.
May my shield ever protect me.
So Mote it Be.

How Witches Make Sacred the Morning and Evening—Ep. 220

“That’s when I felt dumb and stupid,” my friend, Alicia, said.
“Have you ever been able to let it go…for a time?” I asked.
“Not really. I wish I could,” she said.
This conversation really gripped me. With my depression symptoms, I have endured several times when I was angry with myself. I felt terrible.
I needed to look at positive actions that I could take.
Here are three insights.
Do you listen to yourself? Do you pause and think about how you might feel in the future about a present decision?
Sometimes, I pause. I reflect on the situation. I say to myself, “If I don’t do this, I will regret it.” This can get me into action.
I learned about “rocking chair regrets.” Picture that you’re older and in a rocking chair. Will you regret certain things you did not do?
“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain
I have a friend who made a feature film. Did it make money? No. Does she regret doing the film? No. Why? It was an adventure, and it led to good things for many people in the cast and crew.
“It’s better to look ahead and prepare, than to look back and regret.” – Jackie Joyner-Kersee
So how can you tell what you will regret when making a decision? Think of the rocking chair. How will you feel when you reflect on your life?
Carefully make choices and consider appropriate risks for you to have a good life.
What is life? Learning and growing. If you have a regret, think to yourself, “What’s the lesson I can learn from this?” Mistakes are for learning. The classic comment is: “Wisdom comes from bad decisions.”
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou
That’s part of handling regret. Tell yourself: “When I know better, I do better.”
I have a friend who says, “I don’t go backward.” He is an artist. He completes projects, moves forward, and starts the next project. Some of his projects fail to get the response he’d like. He does not get stuck in revising his old work. He focuses on building a collection of his work.
I talked with a screenwriter who said, “A smart screenwriter has one screenplay put into the marketplace…one screenplay she is finishing…and one screenplay she is starting. She is not afraid about having only one project. She avoids regretting that she did not take action.”
Goddess and God stand by to support you.
Here is a prayer to support you:
Goddess of the Moon and Lord of the Sun,
Help me let go of regret and use the lessons learned to do better.
Infuse me with the energy of calm in this present moment.

How Witches Handle When Things are Unfair—Ep. 219
The night shook with the cold wind from the West. Inside the home, people I knew were waiting for me. Because I deal with depression symptoms, I have limited energy. Going to this gathering required me to ground my energy and effectively use a protective, energy shield.
I have three insights for you.
Grounding yourself can change your energy instantaneously. When you do the grounding process, you can flush out bad energy. You can also release excess energy. One process is to envision that you’re taking unsettled energy and pushing it out through your feet into the ground. Such energy dissipates harmlessly. Another step is to envision pulling in energy from the Gods through the crown of your head. You fill your body with such elevating energy.
In a gathering, people’s energies are emanating and colliding. Often, other people’s energies can be negative, scattered, or disruptive.
When you put up a personal shield, you place a form of protection from unwanted energies. For more information on shielding, see my post here.
In a gathering of friends, you likely want to let in certain loving energy. As you form your personal shield, you can direct the process by saying something like: “This shield only allows true and positive love to enter. And, all negative and disruptive energy is kept outside.”

How Witches Change Their Perception of Reality—Ep. 218
I was stunned. There it was: The sign I had prayed for. The Gods had given me this sign.
A white rabbit statue. To make the correct decision I asked the Gods for a sign of a white rabbit. Standing inside the Filoli Gardens, I had a confirmation of the Gods supporting me.
I have three insights for you.
Dealing with clinical depression symptoms, I am often impacted by fear, worry, and anxiety. I have learned that I must pause and notice if my first thoughts are fear-based.
Here are three actions for separating yourself from being controlled by fear.
A. Ask the God and Goddess for help.
You can ask through meditation, ritual, or prayer. The Gods are always here to help us.
B. Meditate to help you rise above.
When you meditate, imagine that you rise above the situation. Perhaps, you visualize rising in a helicopter. You step away from your first perception. Now, you can view the situation with fresh eyes.
C. Do a reading with some form of divinatory tool.
Using a divinatory tool can help you experience a new perception. Our plan is to separate from the first fearful thoughts. The divinatory tool can help you create some space and distance from the initial fearful experience of the situation.
Consider taking a ritual bath. This form of bath helps you get rid of negative thoughts and feelings that shackle you.
Light some candles. Place appropriate herbs into the heated water.
Rest and soak. Give yourself some needed space and quiet. Observe what new ideas arise.
Ask for a sign from the Gods and invite Them into your decision-making process. They can help you see a situation from a new angle.
The Gods can support you to shake free of limiting perceptions and beliefs.
