How Witches Feel Their Strength in a Time of Crisis

Are you feeling down—with every day of this current coronavirus pandemic? Do you feel bad because you’ve lost so much?

With so much stress and even people hoarding supplies, where is the hope?

That hope is you.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever toward it; let naught stop you or turn you aside.  –Doreen Valiente, writing in the voice of the Goddess in The Charge of The Goddess

In this time of stress and fear, we need to take this quote to heart. The good in us will prevail when we stick to our faith.

Here are four things we can do toward keeping to our highest ideal:

  • Focus on the Truth

Remind yourself of the truth that you are really connected with the Gods. The Gods placed Their Divinity within you. Additionally, be careful about keeping your word. If you say you will call at a certain time, be sure to do it. You’ll feel better. With people trusting you, you’ll support your relationships.

  • Dedicate Your Efforts and Time to the Gods

Devote a certain time each day to your relationship with the Gods. Even if you only devote a 5-minute meditation session each day, it is still valuable. If you decide to do a brief ritual every two days, that helps, too.

Your dedication to the God and Goddess is key. Perhaps, do rituals in which you provide an offering and in which you celebrate what blessings the Gods are bestowing on you and others. I realize that broadcast news and social media concentrate on all the losses. I remind myself to take time and devote effort to focus on what I’m grateful for.

  • Serve Others

Even while you’re sheltering in place (at home), you can serve others. You could simply listen to a friend in a phone conversation. That’s serving. It’s essential. It is a genuine human-to-human connection. I remember that Christopher Reeve, while paralyzed and in a wheelchair, taught his youngest son, Will, how to ride a bicycle only using his words.

Words and the positive tone of your voice can serve the person you talk to—on the phone.

Just today, my family ordered pizza (to be delivered) to help a local restaurant stay in business.

We all help in many, small ways.

  • Maintain your identity as a person who spreads love and compassion

Many witches I know demonstrate compassion. This means a lot to me. As you go through your day, do what you can to spread kindness.

How Witches Use the “Grounding” Process to Stay Calm and Healthy

Is every new bit of news related to the coronavirus adding to your stress?

Now, many witches see that they must fall back on their essential skills of grounding and centering.

Grounding is safely shunting unwanted energy into the Earth.

Centering is aligning your energy.

With so many of us faltering under the current intense stress, it’s helpful to regularly ground and center yourself.

Here’s a Process for You to Ground and Center Yourself:

Find a quiet space, place your feet flat on the ground and breathe deeply.

Feel the tension and stress in your body. In a moment, you’ll use the following Tree of Life Meditation to release this tension.

The Tree of Life Meditation

(You can record your voice on your phone and play it back so you can concentrate on this meditation.)

Slowly breathe in and out.

Breathe in the energy of love and peace (envision this as white energy). Breathe out all stress and negativity (envision this as black smoke).

Keep taking deep breaths in and out.

Concentrate on the white energy being breathed in and filling up your body with loving energy. Then let go and breathe out the negative energy you see, in your mind’s eye, as black smoke. As you do this, release the stresses of the day. Repeat this breathing cycle at least three times until you are comfortable and relaxed.

As your body and mind begin to relax, continue deep breathing and focus on this image:

Envision roots made up of energy that sprout from the bottoms of your feet. With each breath, extend the roots farther and farther down toward Mother Earth.

Extend them down through the floor, down past the plumbing of the house and down deep into Mother Earth’s body. Reach down to her core, to the center of Her heart.

Once there, with each breath in, pull up the energy from Mother Earth. Breathe out the stress and breathe in the blue-green energy of Mother Earth.

Pull the energy up through your roots, up past the plumbing of the house, past the floor and into your feet. The energy feels clean and refreshing.

Breathe in deeply. Pull the blue-green energy up into your legs and past your knees. Pull it up, up into your Root Chakra at the base of your spine. Let it fill your body, up into your Sacral Chakra and continuing to your Solar Plexus Chakra. Breathing in deeply, draw the energy up into your Heart Chakra. Let the energy flow down your arms and into your hands. Feel your body relax as the energy fills it.

Breathing in, draw the energy up into your Throat Chakra.

Concentrate on the blue-green energy filling your body. When you are ready, with another breath in, breathe the energy up into your Third Eye Chakra.

Using your breath, draw the energy up into your Crown Chakra. Feel the energy flow throughout your body.

With another breath in, pull the energy up and out of your head. The energy forms like branches toward the Sky above you. Continue and let the branches flow up and out into the cosmos.

Draw down the golden energy of the Sky and universe into you. Continue to let the Sky energy intermingle and mix with the Earth energy that is already there. Pull it down through your body and into your arms.

Continue breathing deeply, mixing and pulling the energies down to your Heart Chakra.

Breathe in again, pulling the energy of the universe down into your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Continue pulling in the energy. Let it flow into you. Pull it into your Root Chakra. Breathing deeply, pull it down your legs and down to your feet.

Feel the energy from both the Earth Mother and the Sky Father that is within you.

Now focus on pulling this mixed energy out from the top of your head once more. But this time let it cascade down all around you like a waterfall until it completely surrounds you.

With a deep breath in, take the energy and push it out in all directions into an egg shape around you. This is the Cosmic Egg of Protection.

Keep breathing and push out more and more energy into your egg.

Your egg gets stronger and stronger.

When you are satisfied with the strength of your egg stop and relax.

In a moment or two, slowly start to pull your branches back within you, pulling them in with each breath.

Let any extra energy dissipate through the roots that you had placed into the Earth from your feet, keeping the egg intact.

Now breathe in, pulling the roots, up, and back into your body just like the branches that were above you. Give yourself over to the total relaxation you now feel.

In a moment or two—and when you are ready—open your eyes.


After doing this process repeatedly, you’ll discover that you can do it without needing to hear a recording.

May this Grounding and Centering Process support you during the current difficult times.

How Witches Can Have Bright Moments on a Tough Path

Has being a witch cost you and caused you pain? If so, I’m with you. As a witch, I have lost friends. They had no space in their heart for someone different from them.

Losing someone you cared about, as they leave your life, hurts a lot. Sometimes, I see being a witch as a tough path.

We, witches, face so many judgments, and some people hate us—especially because they don’t know the truth about our spiritual path.

I realized that we, witches, need to have bright moments to sustain us on our spiritual path.

Here are some insights:

  • Focus on the Gods, your spiritual path and shielding.

Why do you need to do shielding? Because some people send destructive energy toward us—even when they don’t know it.

We need to keep ourselves strong and safe. We can live a life with bright moments.

Remember that your strength comes from the Gods. When other people throw terrible energy at you, focus on your true path and the God and Goddess. Concentrate on your practice. Especially grounding and shielding. Ground first and then shield.

To ground yourself, you can do these three valuable methods of grounding.

1. Eat good food

Eat something. Carbohydrate-rich foods (such as breads or pasta) help pull you down from the high energy state that you achieved during magick working. See my Cakes and Wine Ceremony for an example of using food.

2. Push energy into the ground

Shunt the extra energy back into the earth. One way is to take your hands or bare feet and place them on the bare earth. Release the energy by visualizing that you are pushing the energy into the earth. Mother Earth will recycle it for you. Having any contact with the earth is truly grounding. You can even lay in a field of grass and just deep breathe.

3. Hug a tree

Ask the tree for permission before you hug it. You can ask permission as a thought in your own mind. After you have the tree’s permission, hug it and visualize that the extra energy is absorbed by it. The tree will do the rest. It naturally helps you pull the energy from your body and restore your internal balance. The tree takes the unneeded energy and shunts the energy down safely into Mother Earth.

You can use the Tree of Life Meditation for further grounding. You will also add the Cosmic Egg Shield to the process.

The Tree of Life Meditation plus the Cosmic Egg Shield

Slowly breathe in and out. Breathe in the energy of love and peace (envision this as white energy). Breathe out all stress and negativity (envision this as black smoke). Keep taking deep breaths in and out. Concentrate on the white energy being breathed in and filling up your body with loving energy. Then let go and breathe out the negative energy you see as black smoke. As you do this, release the stresses of the day. You have now made the Cosmic Egg Shield. This shield will protect you from absorbing negative energy. Just remember to reinforce your Cosmic Egg Shield by repeating the above ritual.

Once you have mastered these practices you can more easily let in the light and good energy you deserve.


  • Turn your focus to helping others

When I get down and the path is rough, I look at helping others. When I do that, I open myself and the person I am helping to the light of happiness. Even gifting another person with your smile is helpful.

Helping in your local community or the larger community is a great way to ease your path. You could also choose to work with animals. I volunteered at the Peninsula Humane Society and worked with small animals.

You can volunteer at a food bank or other place like Habitat for Humanity. You can help your elderly neighbor with their housework or yard/garden work.

The point is to help others feel better. In so doing, you create happiness for yourself.

Doing these things can help others also learn that witches are kind and helpful people. This can help us ease our path.

  • Practice ways to shift out of negativity

“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” – Haruki Murakami

Have you ever heard bad news and noticed that you had a choice? You can dwell for a long time on the bad news or seek to shift your thoughts to something positive.

For example, today I learned that my cat has fallen ill again. He needs insulin injections that I give him. I could stay in my thoughts about how fragile his life is. Or I could grieve a bit and then play with him. In this case, my pain about having to give him the shots (and cause him temporary pain) is inevitable. But I can let go of some suffering by shifting my thoughts to the present moment and playing with him. (He likes to chase after shoestrings.)

We all know that the path is strewn with dangers and setbacks. It’s important for us to practice ways to shift to bringing in the healing powers of positive energy. Shifting can be a way to help create more balance in your life.

Haruki Murakami’s quote about pain and suffering reminds me that we can shift into the present moment and focus on gratitude for the blessings we have.

How Witches Use Time Management So They Connect with the Gods

“What’s most important to you as a witch?” I asked my friend, Jessica.
“To connect with the Gods,” she replied.
“You look concerned,” I said.
“I’m just not doing it. I’m not showing up for ritual,” she said, frowning.
This began an important conversation.

I’ll share three insights here:

  • The distractions and obligations of everyday life can strangle your spiritual practice.

Fear can exacerbate the situation. That is, many of us are buried in fear-inducing problems with the job, the kids and more. We live in a chaotic world. Not knowing what to do can stifle or even completely stall your spiritual practice. So many of us say, “I just can’t find the time.”

When you pause, you can realize that even just five minutes of meditation can calm you down and clear your thinking. That’s how a spiritual practice can be a lifesaver in the mundane and chaotic world.

  • Gathering with your Coven will give you a safe space for ritual.

When I am with my coven, I feel deeply supported. We support each other and raise each other up. We are a strong group. Being in a coven is having a chosen family.

This family can encourage your spiritual growth. This can be especially good if you don’t have a supportive family at home. If you gather with your coven, someplace outside your own home, you can find it to be an oasis from your mundane surroundings.

  • Pick your morning or evening as your sacred time.

I had a conversation with a friend who is a time management expert who authored three books on the topic. He noticed that time management is not really about lists, it’s about making great choices.

Have you noticed that your only “free time” is in the morning or at night before you go to sleep? You may want to choose one of those times as a designated sacred time. Mornings may work for some better than others because one can be fresh from the night’s rest.

However, if you are a night owl, you may prefer evenings.

I find that evenings seem to be the time I can spare. It may be better for me in the morning, but, at this time, I find that doing a brief meditation session (with my husband) before bedtime helps us both.

Don’t wait to have only an “ideal time.” Three minutes in your parked and locked car (someplace safe), may be helpful. You could recharge before going into your home for “family time.”

Remember, time management is about making great choices.

Choose to connect with the God and Goddess. Even a daily 5-minute meditation practice may truly brighten your life.

Wiccans, Invite Goddess to Help with Your Depression

“It feels like I’ll never shake off this horrible, low feeling,” my friend, Melissa, said.

We were in the middle of a conversation about depression symptoms. I have worked for years to cope with my own clinical depression symptoms. I’ve learned you can live a good life even with such symptoms.

Research Shows that Helping Someone Can Lift Much of Depression Symptoms.

Why?

I’ve experienced certain benefits, which quiet down my depression symptoms.

Benefits of Helping

You realize …

  • You have value

For example, when I help someone, I feel as though I have a purpose. I feel like I can make a difference in someone else’s life—that I can be a valued part of the community.

  • You have relieved suffering for someone else

Sometimes, when you just listen, you’re relieving someone’s suffering. You’re providing space so the other person can unburden themselves.

  • Your attention shifts away from your suffering, and it is now on the task at hand—to help this person

Pause for a moment. Why do many of us like movies and TV shows? Because we can unplug from our own problems and disappear into the fictional world of the film or TV show.

When you help someone, you’re plugging into another person’s world.

A Bonus: Research shows that helping other people relieves the helper of vague guilt-feelings.

 How Do We, Wiccans, Invite the Gracious Goddess to Guide Us related to Helping?

For many of us, the questions are: Who do I help? What would be something good for me to do?

The Gracious Goddess can help with you finding answers.

You can call on Her just before you go into a meditation session.

Here’s a Prayer to Give You Strength to Help Someone

Gracious Goddess, give me strength to lend aid,
To those who feel downtrodden and afraid.
Gracious Goddess, open my heart up wide,
Let me see the truth inside.
Blessings I give, and those bestowed,
Now dry all the tears that have flowed.
Let my deeds help those in need,
Gracious Goddess, help plant that seed.
As I So Will
So Mote It Be.

Witches Break Down Barriers to Get What They Want

“My recent two spells failed,” my friend, Rachel, said.

“It may be happening because of internal barriers you might have,” I replied.

“Barriers like what?” she asked.

This began an important conversation about how you can release yourself from inner barriers to manifesting what you really want.

One barrier relates to the idea “I don’t deserve good things.” Many of us have heard extreme messages from our parents or guardians about how we’re not good enough. Our subconscious mind takes that in. Then it becomes an extra burden: Your spell is competing with resistance found in your subconscious mind.

How Do We Release Barriers in Our Subconscious Mind?

In this year, 2019, I’m scheduled to guide fellow Wiccans during a presentation in New Zealand (in a few months).

Here I want to emphasize one important point:

  • Meditation can help us with inner blocks that hide deep inside us, keeping us from our goals.

The good news is that we can use meditation to explore our inner being. Then, we can shine a light into the depths of our souls. Often, it truly helps to have an elder/mentor guide you. Having proper guidance during your journey will help you deal with those blocks more effectively.

Consider developing a consistent meditation practice. Why? Proper meditation helps witches find their truth. It’s like the can opener to the mind. When we have access to our subconscious mind, we can make great things happen for ourselves.

The subconscious mind is where a lot of our programming took place. For example, as a child, Susan was severely chastised when she spilled milk. As an adult, to this day, she cannot stand milk. The subconscious programming can really shackle us.

That’s the reason it is vital to use meditation to connect with deep and positive aspects of your spiritual essence. That’s when you become free.

In summary, meditation is a powerful tool that we can use to access our subconscious mind and reshape it to assist us in successfully performing our spells.
