How Witches Can Make Herbal Tinctures, Sacred Oil and Lip Balm (Stay Healthy while You Shelter in Place)

Here’s how to do witch-crafts*: making herbal tinctures, sacred oil, and lip balm.

Witches have enjoyed health benefits with these witch-crafts.

* I personally use the below methods. In all activities like those below, you must be truly careful to follow directions and double-check that you are using truly safe ingredients.

How to Make a Sacred Tincture

What you will need:

  • 2 dark jars
  • Funnel for liquids
  • Cheesecloth
  • Enough herbs to fill the jar one-third full
  • Bottle of vodka

On a waxing moon thirteen days before the full moon, cleanse and consecrate your jars, cheesecloth, funnel, and a bottle of vodka.

Warning: Do not use poisonous herbs!

Ask the Gods to enrich these items with Their positive energy as you fill one of the jars one-third full of the herbs. Fill the jar the rest of the way with vodka. Shake the jar until the contents are well mixed.

Leave the mixture in a dark, cool place.

For thirteen days, mix the herbs by shaking them daily. Make sure to keep all the herbs fully submerged to avoid mold.

Once your tincture (the mixture) has been fully infused, use the second jar, funnel, and cheesecloth to strain the tincture. Place the funnel into the opening of the second jar. Cover the funnel with the cheesecloth and pour your tincture through the cheeseclothinto the second jar. Make sure you squeeze the herbs to get all the tincture out of them.

Label the jar and identify when the tincture was completed.

Now the tincture is ready for you to use in your spell work.


How to Make a Sacred Oil

What you will need:

  • 2 clean, dark jars (the dark tint keeps the sun out)
  • Funnel for liquids
  • Cheesecloth
  • Enough dried herbs to fill the jar two-thirds full
  • Bottle of Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil, enough to fill one of the dark jars

On a full moon, use your herb of choice.

Warning: Do not use poisonous herbs!

Cleanse and consecrate your jars, cheesecloth, funnel, and oil.

Ask the Gods to enrich these items with their positive energy.

Fill one of the jars two-thirds full of the herbs, and then fill the jar the rest of the way with the oil. Jiggle the jar to get all the air out from in between the herbs, where pockets of air can stick. Once the jar is full, shake it until the contents are well-mixed.

Leave the jar in a dark, cool place.

Shake the jar each day, and make sure to keep all the herbs submerged to avoid mold. Open the jar and smell the oil to make sure it isn’t going rancid. Repeat this process for a full month until the next full moon.

Once your oil has been fully infused with the herbs, you will use cheesecloth to strain the mixture.

Place the funnel into the opening of the second jar. Place the cheesecloth over the funnel and pour your mixture into the second jar—straining the mixture with the cheesecloth. Make sure you squeeze the herbs in the cheesecloth to get all the mixture out of them.

Place a label on the mixture jar to identify it—and the date when you strained the mixture.


How to Make a Lip Balm

A balm is thicker than a salve. Salves, being a softer consistency, will penetrate the skin more deeply, and this makes them great choices for healing wounds.

Balms, requiring vigorous rubbing, can be great for muscle cramps.

I personally use this recipe below:

Lip Balm Recipe

1 T. Coconut oil
1 t. Sweet almond oil
1 T. Beeswax
2 t. Heaping t. Shea butter
1 t. Vitamin E oil
1 – 2 Drops Grape Seed oil
5 Drops Essential oil

Directions:

Melt together coconut oil, sweet almond oil, Shea Butter, and Bees Wax. Once the mixture is melted, add your Vitamin E oil and Grape Seed Oil. Stir in your choice of essential oil and fill a small, empty, wide-mouthed container. Set the lip balm mixture aside, so it can solidify. Then it will be ready to use.

How Witches Stay Healthy and Avoid Weight Gain – During Shelter in Place (Coronavirus Crisis)

Here are three insights to support you.

  • Stay Active

It is crucial to stay active at this time. Goddess gave us a body that is meant to move. I look for opportunities to move, even just walking in my garage or the living room. The Goddess mentions “ecstasy of the spirit,” and this reminds me to listen to music with a beat so I can dance.

  • Find a hobby – keep your hands busy

My friend, Jackie, said, “I’m afraid that if I get bored, I’m going to eat too much.”

I’m concerned about this, too. So, I’ve returned to knitting.

Help your heart “rejoice.” Find something that gives you some good feelings.

 I have dealt with weight gain at different times in my life. Have you noticed, like I have, that if you do too much self-denial that binge-eating can creep into your life?

I’ve learned to avoid denying myself all tastes of chocolate. I just reduce the amount. Under so much stress, it’s tempting to eat the whole chocolate bunny. I often bring myself to go for a third of it. That’s progress.

How Witches Make a Sigil to Keep Them Safe and Healthy

Are you feeling down with every report about the effects of the coronavirus around the world and in your community?

You can put a magical intention on your safety and health into an object. Why would you do that? Witches do this because they want the object to hold power to help them realize a personal desire.

Making your own personal sigils is easy. Some time ago, author/artist Austin Osman Spare devised a method for creating sigils.

Since that time, a number of authors have discussed Austin Osman Spare’s process of making sigils. One book I appreciate is Frater U. D.’s Practical Sigil Magic: Creating Personal Symbols for Success.

I have made a couple of my own additions to the process.

First, throughout history, witches made sigils out of virgin parchment. But that is quite expensive. Also, if you’re vegan and will not wear leather, you will want to use something else. Why? Parchment is typically made from goatskin. So, let’s talk about a process devoid of parchment.

I use the heavier art paper, the kind that absorbs ink and which can be infused with different tinctures made with herbs. Watercolor paper is a nice choice, too.

What about inks? You could use one or of the many magickal inks on the market. My favorite is Dragons Blood Ink. But magickal inks can be expensive. So, you can make your own out of a high-grade ink such as Winsor Newton ink or India ink. To make it a magickal ink just add some essential oil to it, like myrrh. Mix and consecrate.

You can even use Sharpie pens as author Peter Paddon suggests. Just make sure to designate specific pens for only magickal work. They’ll be part of your set of magickal tools.

You can use different colors for different desires. Here is a shortlist of colors and meanings that I include in my book The Hidden Children of the Goddess [free chapter when you CLICK HERE]:

  • Red: sex, desire, vitality, strength
    • Orange: charm, confidence, joy, jealousy, persuasion
    • Yellow: intellectual development, joy, intellectual strength
    • Green: prosperity, abundance, fertility, money matters
    • Blue: healing, protection, spiritual development
    • Purple: the occult, power, magick
    • Pink: love, friendship, compassion
    • White: purity, innocence, peace, tranquility

Write out your desire on a scratch piece of paper; you can use a single word or a phrase.

For this example, I am using the words “Safety and Health.”

Cross off all of the repeat letters in “Safety and Health.” You end up with S, A, F, E, T, N, D, H and L. (You want only one of each letter that appears in the word.) Next, scramble the letters.

Now comes the fun part: Combine the letters together in an image. (I’ve also added arrows and dots.)

Can you find the letters?

In this way, you can make all sorts of sigils.

If you want to imbue it with a potion or tincture this is the time to do it. You can either soak the paper in your tincture or brush it on. Either way, you must let it dry. Overnight is best.

Now with this new image (of combined letters), inscribe it with your magical ink on your absorbent paper.

Now that you have the sigil, the next step is to breathe life into it with Pranic Breathing, also known as belly breathing. If you’re familiar with yoga, you are probably familiar with Pranic Breathing techniques. Breathe in deeply; allow your stomach to inflate. Visualize pulling up energy from the earth. When you have built up enough energy in your lungs, blow it onto the sigil. This will charge it with your energy and further empower your intention.

Now place your sigil in a safe place and forget about it. Forgetting about it is the toughest part of the whole process. This helps the magick work.

As you can see, making your own sigils is quite easy and fun. After some practice, you will be able to do them quickly and easily.

How Witches Feel Their Strength in a Time of Crisis

Are you feeling down—with every day of this current coronavirus pandemic? Do you feel bad because you’ve lost so much?

With so much stress and even people hoarding supplies, where is the hope?

That hope is you.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever toward it; let naught stop you or turn you aside.  –Doreen Valiente, writing in the voice of the Goddess in The Charge of The Goddess

In this time of stress and fear, we need to take this quote to heart. The good in us will prevail when we stick to our faith.

Here are four things we can do toward keeping to our highest ideal:

  • Focus on the Truth

Remind yourself of the truth that you are really connected with the Gods. The Gods placed Their Divinity within you. Additionally, be careful about keeping your word. If you say you will call at a certain time, be sure to do it. You’ll feel better. With people trusting you, you’ll support your relationships.

  • Dedicate Your Efforts and Time to the Gods

Devote a certain time each day to your relationship with the Gods. Even if you only devote a 5-minute meditation session each day, it is still valuable. If you decide to do a brief ritual every two days, that helps, too.

Your dedication to the God and Goddess is key. Perhaps, do rituals in which you provide an offering and in which you celebrate what blessings the Gods are bestowing on you and others. I realize that broadcast news and social media concentrate on all the losses. I remind myself to take time and devote effort to focus on what I’m grateful for.

  • Serve Others

Even while you’re sheltering in place (at home), you can serve others. You could simply listen to a friend in a phone conversation. That’s serving. It’s essential. It is a genuine human-to-human connection. I remember that Christopher Reeve, while paralyzed and in a wheelchair, taught his youngest son, Will, how to ride a bicycle only using his words.

Words and the positive tone of your voice can serve the person you talk to—on the phone.

Just today, my family ordered pizza (to be delivered) to help a local restaurant stay in business.

We all help in many, small ways.

  • Maintain your identity as a person who spreads love and compassion

Many witches I know demonstrate compassion. This means a lot to me. As you go through your day, do what you can to spread kindness.

How Witches Use the “Grounding” Process to Stay Calm and Healthy

Is every new bit of news related to the coronavirus adding to your stress?

Now, many witches see that they must fall back on their essential skills of grounding and centering.

Grounding is safely shunting unwanted energy into the Earth.

Centering is aligning your energy.

With so many of us faltering under the current intense stress, it’s helpful to regularly ground and center yourself.

Here’s a Process for You to Ground and Center Yourself:

Find a quiet space, place your feet flat on the ground and breathe deeply.

Feel the tension and stress in your body. In a moment, you’ll use the following Tree of Life Meditation to release this tension.

The Tree of Life Meditation

(You can record your voice on your phone and play it back so you can concentrate on this meditation.)

Slowly breathe in and out.

Breathe in the energy of love and peace (envision this as white energy). Breathe out all stress and negativity (envision this as black smoke).

Keep taking deep breaths in and out.

Concentrate on the white energy being breathed in and filling up your body with loving energy. Then let go and breathe out the negative energy you see, in your mind’s eye, as black smoke. As you do this, release the stresses of the day. Repeat this breathing cycle at least three times until you are comfortable and relaxed.

As your body and mind begin to relax, continue deep breathing and focus on this image:

Envision roots made up of energy that sprout from the bottoms of your feet. With each breath, extend the roots farther and farther down toward Mother Earth.

Extend them down through the floor, down past the plumbing of the house and down deep into Mother Earth’s body. Reach down to her core, to the center of Her heart.

Once there, with each breath in, pull up the energy from Mother Earth. Breathe out the stress and breathe in the blue-green energy of Mother Earth.

Pull the energy up through your roots, up past the plumbing of the house, past the floor and into your feet. The energy feels clean and refreshing.

Breathe in deeply. Pull the blue-green energy up into your legs and past your knees. Pull it up, up into your Root Chakra at the base of your spine. Let it fill your body, up into your Sacral Chakra and continuing to your Solar Plexus Chakra. Breathing in deeply, draw the energy up into your Heart Chakra. Let the energy flow down your arms and into your hands. Feel your body relax as the energy fills it.

Breathing in, draw the energy up into your Throat Chakra.

Concentrate on the blue-green energy filling your body. When you are ready, with another breath in, breathe the energy up into your Third Eye Chakra.

Using your breath, draw the energy up into your Crown Chakra. Feel the energy flow throughout your body.

With another breath in, pull the energy up and out of your head. The energy forms like branches toward the Sky above you. Continue and let the branches flow up and out into the cosmos.

Draw down the golden energy of the Sky and universe into you. Continue to let the Sky energy intermingle and mix with the Earth energy that is already there. Pull it down through your body and into your arms.

Continue breathing deeply, mixing and pulling the energies down to your Heart Chakra.

Breathe in again, pulling the energy of the universe down into your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Continue pulling in the energy. Let it flow into you. Pull it into your Root Chakra. Breathing deeply, pull it down your legs and down to your feet.

Feel the energy from both the Earth Mother and the Sky Father that is within you.

Now focus on pulling this mixed energy out from the top of your head once more. But this time let it cascade down all around you like a waterfall until it completely surrounds you.

With a deep breath in, take the energy and push it out in all directions into an egg shape around you. This is the Cosmic Egg of Protection.

Keep breathing and push out more and more energy into your egg.

Your egg gets stronger and stronger.

When you are satisfied with the strength of your egg stop and relax.

In a moment or two, slowly start to pull your branches back within you, pulling them in with each breath.

Let any extra energy dissipate through the roots that you had placed into the Earth from your feet, keeping the egg intact.

Now breathe in, pulling the roots, up, and back into your body just like the branches that were above you. Give yourself over to the total relaxation you now feel.

In a moment or two—and when you are ready—open your eyes.


After doing this process repeatedly, you’ll discover that you can do it without needing to hear a recording.

How Witches Stay Calm While People Are Panicking Near Them

Would you like to return to the wisdom of Wicca during this troubling time?

Here are three insights to support you:

  1. Limit your exposure to panic-inducing input

Are you glued to the T.V. or your smartphone—watching people repeat over and over the terrible news about the coronavirus and plunging stock market?

Consider that you may feel better by limiting how much repetitive, stressful messages you’re hearing … all day long.

Imagine taking a break. Time to breathe in. Gently. In … and … out.

How about limiting your exposure to the news/social media to once per 4 hours?

I remember being in a relative’s house during the 911 Tragedies. After seeing a bit of news, I went upstairs and took a break. I’d check back 4 hours later.

Give yourself a well-deserved break.

The news is designed to keep you there through commercials. What seizes attention? Crisis, disaster, and agony.

Instead, Wiccans, when we pause, realize that the Gods have given us so many blessings. That’s right!—there is more to life than misery.

  1. Focus on the Gods for real safety

 “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” – Carl Rogers

The Gods love us. We have more than soap protecting us.

I realize that the good life is a process of turning my attention back to the Gods—over and over throughout the day.

Sure, one’s body may be hurt. But your soul, the divinity that the Gods put in you, that is the source of your true strength and your true peace.

Repeat to yourself—through the day—chants and prayers to the Gods. This is a real source of inner strength and real hope.

  1. Devote time to de-stress.

Every day, I take a walk with my sweetheart. We remind ourselves to connect with the blessings of the Gods. How? We say “Sky—tree.” That reminds us to look up and see the lovely sky and trees. Wiccans know that we are connected to the natural world. The trees are our friends.

How Witches Handle Worry in the Age of the Coronavirus

We, witches, have some tools to support us during this time of anxiety.

Here are three methods to support you.

  1. Make washing your hands a ritual

The World Health Organization and other health-related institutions emphasize washing your hands.

Many of us have heard: Sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice while you’re washing to clean your hands thoroughly.

We, witches, can substitute a chant or prayer that we recite in our mind—while washing your hands. Then you have the added benefit of connecting with the Gods.

  1. Get enough rest and recovery times

If you’re feeling run-down, you’re more susceptible to falling ill. Rest is the key to staying healthy. Sometimes, we are so busy that we forget to just take a break.

I schedule my time to go to sleep and my time to awaken. If I get knocked off schedule, I’ll take a nap when I can.

  1. Ask the Gods to help you shift out of worry, and ask Them to keep you safe.

It’s understandable that we feel anxiety rise every time we’re exposed to another broadcast news/social media mention of the latest statistics about people contracting the coronavirus.

I’ve noticed that I can shift out of the anxious feelings if I turn my mind to prayer or chanting to the Gods. It’s important that we don’t let ourselves stay stuck in worry-related thoughts. Such thoughts can make our adrenal glands overwork.

Paying attention to dire announcements all day long causes the stress hormone cortisol to be secreted—a lot. Too much cortisol can lead to health risks. It’s important to shift to inner peace. Turn to the Gods for help.

Prayer and meditation are good ways to ask the Gods for assistance. The Gods can help calm your anxiety and fear.

You can use this chant along with meditation.

Protection Chant

Lord and Lady
Protect me in my need
Keep me calm and at ease.
Let my fears be released
Help me know inner peace.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Take Care of Themselves When Feeling Overwhelmed

“I’ve had enough of this. My family and people at work are so hard to get along with. That’s it! I’m overwhelmed,” my friend, Janet, said.

This conversation stuck with me.

Someone new to Wicca asked me, “How does Wicca help you with daily life?”

I felt like saying, “I’ll tell you. Do you have an hour?”

I have three insights for when we’re dealing with feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Breathe

I’ve learned that belly breathing is truly supportive. When we’re overwhelmed, many of us breathe shallowly—up high in the chest. Breathing in deeply and having your belly area inflate is helpful. You can add the intention, “Goddess relaxes me.”

  1. Talk with the Gods about having “peace in the middle of the action”

Witches know that words have power. If you call something a crisis, then it feels worse. If you talk about being in a “vigorous time,” then it puts things into perspective. During meditation, I ask the Gods to help me find peace in the middle of my day. Saying in “the middle of the action” can come across as neutral. At least, you’re not adding words that make a situation feel like a disaster (when it’s really not that bad).

  1. Read a book or talk with a spiritual elder to get a new perspective

One time, I was reading about the Wheel of the Year, and I had the real impression that with the seasons, everything has its time and place. I could go through a tough season of planting. Eventually, I’ll get to the season of harvest.

May these insights help you take a breath, slow down for a bit and find your way.

How Witches Can Have Bright Moments on a Tough Path

Has being a witch cost you and caused you pain? If so, I’m with you. As a witch, I have lost friends. They had no space in their heart for someone different from them.

Losing someone you cared about, as they leave your life, hurts a lot. Sometimes, I see being a witch as a tough path.

We, witches, face so many judgments, and some people hate us—especially because they don’t know the truth about our spiritual path.

I realized that we, witches, need to have bright moments to sustain us on our spiritual path.

Here are some insights:

  • Focus on the Gods, your spiritual path and shielding.

Why do you need to do shielding? Because some people send destructive energy toward us—even when they don’t know it.

We need to keep ourselves strong and safe. We can live a life with bright moments.

Remember that your strength comes from the Gods. When other people throw terrible energy at you, focus on your true path and the God and Goddess. Concentrate on your practice. Especially grounding and shielding. Ground first and then shield.

To ground yourself, you can do these three valuable methods of grounding.

1. Eat good food

Eat something. Carbohydrate-rich foods (such as breads or pasta) help pull you down from the high energy state that you achieved during magick working. See my Cakes and Wine Ceremony for an example of using food.

2. Push energy into the ground

Shunt the extra energy back into the earth. One way is to take your hands or bare feet and place them on the bare earth. Release the energy by visualizing that you are pushing the energy into the earth. Mother Earth will recycle it for you. Having any contact with the earth is truly grounding. You can even lay in a field of grass and just deep breathe.

3. Hug a tree

Ask the tree for permission before you hug it. You can ask permission as a thought in your own mind. After you have the tree’s permission, hug it and visualize that the extra energy is absorbed by it. The tree will do the rest. It naturally helps you pull the energy from your body and restore your internal balance. The tree takes the unneeded energy and shunts the energy down safely into Mother Earth.

You can use the Tree of Life Meditation for further grounding. You will also add the Cosmic Egg Shield to the process.

The Tree of Life Meditation plus the Cosmic Egg Shield

Slowly breathe in and out. Breathe in the energy of love and peace (envision this as white energy). Breathe out all stress and negativity (envision this as black smoke). Keep taking deep breaths in and out. Concentrate on the white energy being breathed in and filling up your body with loving energy. Then let go and breathe out the negative energy you see as black smoke. As you do this, release the stresses of the day. Repeat this breathing cycle at least three times until you are comfortable and relaxed.

 As your body and mind begin to relax, continue deep breathing and focus on this image:

 Envision roots made of energy sprouting from the bottoms of your feet. With each breath, extend the roots farther and farther down toward Mother Earth.

Extend them down through the floor, down past the plumbing of the house, and down deep into Mother Earth’s body. Go down to her core, to the center of her heart.

 Once there, with each breath in, pull up the energy from Mother Earth. Breathe out the stress, and breathe in the blue-green energy of Mother Earth.

Pull the energy up through your roots, up past the plumbing of the house, past the floor, and into your feet. The energy feels clean and refreshing.

Breathe in deeply. Pull the blue-green energy up into your legs and past your knees. Pull it up into your Root Chakra at the base of your spine. Let it fill your body, going up into your Sacral Chakra and continuing to your Solar Plexus Chakra. Breathing in deeply, draw the energy up into your Heart Chakra. Let the energy flow down your arms and into your hands. Feel your body relax as the energy fills it.

Breathing in, draw the energy up into your Throat Chakra.

Concentrate on the blue-green energy filling your body. When you are ready, with another breath in, breathe the energy up into your Third Eye Chakra.

Using your breath, draw the energy up into your Crown Chakra. Feel the energy flow throughout your body.

With another breath in, pull the energy up and out of your head. The energy forms like branches toward the sky above you. Continue and let the branches flow up to the universe and out into the cosmos.

Draw down the golden energy of the sky and universe into you. Continue to let the sky energy intermingle and mix with the Earth energy that is already there. Pull it down through your body and into your arms.

Continue breathing deeply, mixing and pulling the energies down to your Heart Chakra.

Breathe in again, pulling the energy of the universe down into your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Continue pulling in the energy. Let it flow into you. Pull it into your Root Chakra. Breathing deeply, pull it down your legs and down to your feet.

Feel the energy from both the Mother Earth and Father Sky that is within you.

Now focus on pulling this mixed energy out from the top of your head once more. But this time let it cascade down all around you like a waterfall until it completely surrounds you.

With a deep breath in, take the energy and push it out in all directions into an egg shape around you. This is the Cosmic Egg of Protection. It is your shield. 

Keep breathing and as you do so, push out more and more energy into your egg.

Your egg gets stronger and stronger.

And when you are satisfied with the strength of your egg, stop and relax.

In a moment or two, slowly start to pull your branches back within you, pulling them in with each breath.

Let any extra energy dissipate through the roots that you had placed into the Earth from your feet, keeping the egg intact.

Now breathe the roots up, and back into your body just like the branches that were above you. Give yourself over to the total relaxation you now feel.

In a moment or two—and when you are ready—open your eyes.

[Please know that you can record the above meditation and then listen to it later. Or you could invite a friend to read the above script and guide you through the meditation.]

You have now made the Cosmic Egg Shield. This shield will protect you from absorbing negative energy. Just remember to reinforce your Cosmic Egg Shield by repeating the above ritual.

Once you have mastered these practices you can more easily let in the light and good energy you deserve.


  • Turn your focus to helping others

When I get down and the path is rough, I look at helping others. When I do that, I open myself and the person I am helping to the light of happiness. Even gifting another person with your smile is helpful.

Helping in your local community or the larger community is a great way to ease your path. You could also choose to work with animals. I volunteered at the Peninsula Humane Society and worked with small animals.

You can volunteer at a food bank or other place like Habitat for Humanity. You can help your elderly neighbor with their housework or yard/garden work.

The point is to help others feel better. In so doing, you create happiness for yourself.

Doing these things can help others also learn that witches are kind and helpful people. This can help us ease our path.

  • Practice ways to shift out of negativity

“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” – Haruki Murakami

Have you ever heard bad news and noticed that you had a choice? You can dwell for a long time on the bad news or seek to shift your thoughts to something positive.

For example, today I learned that my cat has fallen ill again. He needs insulin injections that I give him. I could stay in my thoughts about how fragile his life is. Or I could grieve a bit and then play with him. In this case, my pain about having to give him the shots (and cause him temporary pain) is inevitable. But I can let go of some suffering by shifting my thoughts to the present moment and playing with him. (He likes to chase after shoestrings.)

We all know that the path is strewn with dangers and setbacks. It’s important for us to practice ways to shift to bringing in the healing powers of positive energy. Shifting can be a way to help create more balance in your life.

Haruki Murakami’s quote about pain and suffering reminds me that we can shift into the present moment and focus on gratitude for the blessings we have.
