How Witches Stay Calm While People Are Panicking Near Them

Would you like to return to the wisdom of Wicca during this troubling time?

Here are three insights to support you:

  1. Limit your exposure to panic-inducing input

Are you glued to the T.V. or your smartphone—watching people repeat over and over the terrible news about the coronavirus and plunging stock market?

Consider that you may feel better by limiting how much repetitive, stressful messages you’re hearing … all day long.

Imagine taking a break. Time to breathe in. Gently. In … and … out.

How about limiting your exposure to the news/social media to once per 4 hours?

I remember being in a relative’s house during the 911 Tragedies. After seeing a bit of news, I went upstairs and took a break. I’d check back 4 hours later.

Give yourself a well-deserved break.

The news is designed to keep you there through commercials. What seizes attention? Crisis, disaster, and agony.

Instead, Wiccans, when we pause, realize that the Gods have given us so many blessings. That’s right!—there is more to life than misery.

  1. Focus on the Gods for real safety

 “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” – Carl Rogers

The Gods love us. We have more than soap protecting us.

I realize that the good life is a process of turning my attention back to the Gods—over and over throughout the day.

Sure, one’s body may be hurt. But your soul, the divinity that the Gods put in you, that is the source of your true strength and your true peace.

Repeat to yourself—through the day—chants and prayers to the Gods. This is a real source of inner strength and real hope.

  1. Devote time to de-stress.

Every day, I take a walk with my sweetheart. We remind ourselves to connect with the blessings of the Gods. How? We say “Sky—tree.” That reminds us to look up and see the lovely sky and trees. Wiccans know that we are connected to the natural world. The trees are our friends.

How Witches Handle Worry in the Age of the Coronavirus

We, witches, have some tools to support us during this time of anxiety.

Here are three methods to support you.

  1. Make washing your hands a ritual

The World Health Organization and other health-related institutions emphasize washing your hands.

Many of us have heard: Sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice while you’re washing to clean your hands thoroughly.

We, witches, can substitute a chant or prayer that we recite in our mind—while washing your hands. Then you have the added benefit of connecting with the Gods.

  1. Get enough rest and recovery times

If you’re feeling run-down, you’re more susceptible to falling ill. Rest is the key to staying healthy. Sometimes, we are so busy that we forget to just take a break.

I schedule my time to go to sleep and my time to awaken. If I get knocked off schedule, I’ll take a nap when I can.

  1. Ask the Gods to help you shift out of worry, and ask Them to keep you safe.

It’s understandable that we feel anxiety rise every time we’re exposed to another broadcast news/social media mention of the latest statistics about people contracting the coronavirus.

I’ve noticed that I can shift out of the anxious feelings if I turn my mind to prayer or chanting to the Gods. It’s important that we don’t let ourselves stay stuck in worry-related thoughts. Such thoughts can make our adrenal glands overwork.

Paying attention to dire announcements all day long causes the stress hormone cortisol to be secreted—a lot. Too much cortisol can lead to health risks. It’s important to shift to inner peace. Turn to the Gods for help.

Prayer and meditation are good ways to ask the Gods for assistance. The Gods can help calm your anxiety and fear.

You can use this chant along with meditation.

Protection Chant

Lord and Lady
Protect me in my need
Keep me calm and at ease.
Let my fears be released
Help me know inner peace.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Take Care of Themselves When Feeling Overwhelmed

“I’ve had enough of this. My family and people at work are so hard to get along with. That’s it! I’m overwhelmed,” my friend, Janet, said.

This conversation stuck with me.

Someone new to Wicca asked me, “How does Wicca help you with daily life?”

I felt like saying, “I’ll tell you. Do you have an hour?”

I have three insights for when we’re dealing with feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Breathe

I’ve learned that belly breathing is truly supportive. When we’re overwhelmed, many of us breathe shallowly—up high in the chest. Breathing in deeply and having your belly area inflate is helpful. You can add the intention, “Goddess relaxes me.”

  1. Talk with the Gods about having “peace in the middle of the action”

Witches know that words have power. If you call something a crisis, then it feels worse. If you talk about being in a “vigorous time,” then it puts things into perspective. During meditation, I ask the Gods to help me find peace in the middle of my day. Saying in “the middle of the action” can come across as neutral. At least, you’re not adding words that make a situation feel like a disaster (when it’s really not that bad).

  1. Read a book or talk with a spiritual elder to get a new perspective

One time, I was reading about the Wheel of the Year, and I had the real impression that with the seasons, everything has its time and place. I could go through a tough season of planting. Eventually, I’ll get to the season of harvest.

May these insights help you take a breath, slow down for a bit and find your way.

How Witches Can Have Bright Moments on a Tough Path

Has being a witch cost you and caused you pain? If so, I’m with you. As a witch, I have lost friends. They had no space in their heart for someone different from them.

Losing someone you cared about, as they leave your life, hurts a lot. Sometimes, I see being a witch as a tough path.

We, witches, face so many judgments, and some people hate us—especially because they don’t know the truth about our spiritual path.

I realized that we, witches, need to have bright moments to sustain us on our spiritual path.

Here are some insights:

  • Focus on the Gods, your spiritual path and shielding.

Why do you need to do shielding? Because some people send destructive energy toward us—even when they don’t know it.

We need to keep ourselves strong and safe. We can live a life with bright moments.

Remember that your strength comes from the Gods. When other people throw terrible energy at you, focus on your true path and the God and Goddess. Concentrate on your practice. Especially grounding and shielding. Ground first and then shield.

To ground yourself, you can do these three valuable methods of grounding.

1. Eat good food

Eat something. Carbohydrate-rich foods (such as breads or pasta) help pull you down from the high energy state that you achieved during magick working. See my Cakes and Wine Ceremony for an example of using food.

2. Push energy into the ground

Shunt the extra energy back into the earth. One way is to take your hands or bare feet and place them on the bare earth. Release the energy by visualizing that you are pushing the energy into the earth. Mother Earth will recycle it for you. Having any contact with the earth is truly grounding. You can even lay in a field of grass and just deep breathe.

3. Hug a tree

Ask the tree for permission before you hug it. You can ask permission as a thought in your own mind. After you have the tree’s permission, hug it and visualize that the extra energy is absorbed by it. The tree will do the rest. It naturally helps you pull the energy from your body and restore your internal balance. The tree takes the unneeded energy and shunts the energy down safely into Mother Earth.

You can use the Tree of Life Meditation for further grounding. You will also add the Cosmic Egg Shield to the process.

The Tree of Life Meditation plus the Cosmic Egg Shield

Slowly breathe in and out. Breathe in the energy of love and peace (envision this as white energy). Breathe out all stress and negativity (envision this as black smoke). Keep taking deep breaths in and out. Concentrate on the white energy being breathed in and filling up your body with loving energy. Then let go and breathe out the negative energy you see as black smoke. As you do this, release the stresses of the day. Repeat this breathing cycle at least three times until you are comfortable and relaxed.

 As your body and mind begin to relax, continue deep breathing and focus on this image:

 Envision roots made of energy sprouting from the bottoms of your feet. With each breath, extend the roots farther and farther down toward Mother Earth.

Extend them down through the floor, down past the plumbing of the house, and down deep into Mother Earth’s body. Go down to her core, to the center of her heart.

 Once there, with each breath in, pull up the energy from Mother Earth. Breathe out the stress, and breathe in the blue-green energy of Mother Earth.

Pull the energy up through your roots, up past the plumbing of the house, past the floor, and into your feet. The energy feels clean and refreshing.

Breathe in deeply. Pull the blue-green energy up into your legs and past your knees. Pull it up into your Root Chakra at the base of your spine. Let it fill your body, going up into your Sacral Chakra and continuing to your Solar Plexus Chakra. Breathing in deeply, draw the energy up into your Heart Chakra. Let the energy flow down your arms and into your hands. Feel your body relax as the energy fills it.

Breathing in, draw the energy up into your Throat Chakra.

Concentrate on the blue-green energy filling your body. When you are ready, with another breath in, breathe the energy up into your Third Eye Chakra.

Using your breath, draw the energy up into your Crown Chakra. Feel the energy flow throughout your body.

With another breath in, pull the energy up and out of your head. The energy forms like branches toward the sky above you. Continue and let the branches flow up to the universe and out into the cosmos.

Draw down the golden energy of the sky and universe into you. Continue to let the sky energy intermingle and mix with the Earth energy that is already there. Pull it down through your body and into your arms.

Continue breathing deeply, mixing and pulling the energies down to your Heart Chakra.

Breathe in again, pulling the energy of the universe down into your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Continue pulling in the energy. Let it flow into you. Pull it into your Root Chakra. Breathing deeply, pull it down your legs and down to your feet.

Feel the energy from both the Mother Earth and Father Sky that is within you.

Now focus on pulling this mixed energy out from the top of your head once more. But this time let it cascade down all around you like a waterfall until it completely surrounds you.

With a deep breath in, take the energy and push it out in all directions into an egg shape around you. This is the Cosmic Egg of Protection. It is your shield. 

Keep breathing and as you do so, push out more and more energy into your egg.

Your egg gets stronger and stronger.

And when you are satisfied with the strength of your egg, stop and relax.

In a moment or two, slowly start to pull your branches back within you, pulling them in with each breath.

Let any extra energy dissipate through the roots that you had placed into the Earth from your feet, keeping the egg intact.

Now breathe the roots up, and back into your body just like the branches that were above you. Give yourself over to the total relaxation you now feel.

In a moment or two—and when you are ready—open your eyes.

[Please know that you can record the above meditation and then listen to it later. Or you could invite a friend to read the above script and guide you through the meditation.]

You have now made the Cosmic Egg Shield. This shield will protect you from absorbing negative energy. Just remember to reinforce your Cosmic Egg Shield by repeating the above ritual.

Once you have mastered these practices you can more easily let in the light and good energy you deserve.


  • Turn your focus to helping others

When I get down and the path is rough, I look at helping others. When I do that, I open myself and the person I am helping to the light of happiness. Even gifting another person with your smile is helpful.

Helping in your local community or the larger community is a great way to ease your path. You could also choose to work with animals. I volunteered at the Peninsula Humane Society and worked with small animals.

You can volunteer at a food bank or other place like Habitat for Humanity. You can help your elderly neighbor with their housework or yard/garden work.

The point is to help others feel better. In so doing, you create happiness for yourself.

Doing these things can help others also learn that witches are kind and helpful people. This can help us ease our path.

  • Practice ways to shift out of negativity

“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” – Haruki Murakami

Have you ever heard bad news and noticed that you had a choice? You can dwell for a long time on the bad news or seek to shift your thoughts to something positive.

For example, today I learned that my cat has fallen ill again. He needs insulin injections that I give him. I could stay in my thoughts about how fragile his life is. Or I could grieve a bit and then play with him. In this case, my pain about having to give him the shots (and cause him temporary pain) is inevitable. But I can let go of some suffering by shifting my thoughts to the present moment and playing with him. (He likes to chase after shoestrings.)

We all know that the path is strewn with dangers and setbacks. It’s important for us to practice ways to shift to bringing in the healing powers of positive energy. Shifting can be a way to help create more balance in your life.

Haruki Murakami’s quote about pain and suffering reminds me that we can shift into the present moment and focus on gratitude for the blessings we have.

How Witches Blossom with Beginnings, Endings and Chapters of Life

Are you going through some time of ending—at this moment?

Maybe, part of what hurts for many of us about Valentine’s Day is that we’re aware of what we don’t have or even what we do have that will end.

Many things end, including our childhood and our innocence. Many of us seek to find some way to deal with endings so we can become stronger.

I have three insights for you:

  1. Savor the sweetness of that prior Chapter of Life

For example, PantheaCon on February 14, 2020, has its 26th and final incarnation. The first time, I felt overwhelmed by the feeling of kinship with the attendees. PantheaCon is where I learned the Tarot and where I made many new friends. Each year, I came home to PantheaCon and saw individuals I otherwise did not see during the year. I learned much from so many people there. I met one of my Spirit Guides during a ritual conducted at PantheaCon.

Now, I realize that I have these sweet memories. And, from February 14th to 17th, I am blessed to make a few more sweet memories.

  1. Make space for your grief

Over the next couple of weeks, I might find myself having tears as I think about PantheaCon fading away like something in your rearview mirror.

I expect to go to the closing ceremonies of this final incarnation of PantheaCon. That will be a way for me to fully experience the process. I remember attending the funeral of a friend. I had tears. I made space for my grief.

In the next couple of weeks, I’ll light a candle of thanks for the many great moments I’ve experienced at PantheaCon.

  1. Look to the horizon for what’s next and carry your lessons

One thing I learned during my first two times of attending PantheaCon was the wisdom to ground my personal energy. Being around so many like-minded people was invigorating. I needed to ground my energy so I could comfortably fall asleep each night.

As I look to the horizon for other possible pagan gatherings, I retain what I learned. For example, I wear a hematite necklace that helps ground energy around me.

How Witches Follow Goddess into New Possibilities

“Well, that was harsh,” my friend, Alicia, said. She had just heard family members tear apart her dreams of owning her own business.

“How can I pick myself up after that?” she asked.

“I’ve learned that people only know what they know. It helps to go to Goddess for support and guidance to see what is really possible,” I said.

People are just doing what they feel is best for you. But most of the time they really don’t know what your True Path is, and they can only hurt you more by shutting you down. The only ones who know are the Gods and you. And sometimes you have a hard time seeing it by yourself.

Here is a prayer I call Goddess Open My Eyes.

Goddess open my eyes to see
All wonderful, new possibilities.
Far and near
To the side and more
Let me see
All open doors.
Support me to move forward
Although I’m uncertain.
Goddess, you know my path
Beyond all burdens.
So Mote It Be.

How Witches Connect with Their Creative Energy

As a witch, do you feel that you’re dancing to your own music while other people are moving at a different rhythm?

We can connect with our freedom to be creative and imaginative.

However, if we get caught up in the mundane world of fear and chaotic energy, we can lose an important part of ourselves. This can be tragic. As witches, we live on the level with magick and the Gods we honor. It’s a multi-spectrum world of color. But if we succumb to the mundane world, we fall into the monochrome world of cowens or mundanes (non-magickal people).

So how do we avoid putting on monochrome glasses?

  1. Devote time to read your sacred texts

You can refresh your mind with your handed-down BOS or a book by a favorite spiritual author.

You can create your own sacred text—your own BOS. Place your spells, your dreams and so much more about your magickal life into your personal BOS. Add colors, pictures and photos. You can go beyond simple, handwritten notes.

  1. Get into nature

As I mentioned in my recent post, make movement part of your daily life. This helps you have more energy for conducting your rituals.

Movement in nature, sometimes called Forest Bathing, can give you a wonderful, renewing experience. You can expand your powers. Not only do you work your body, but also you clean your aura when walking in a forest.

Natural landscapes and animals help you not only uplift your spirit. They also help activate your intuition and your second sight. You can communicate with trees and animals. Sense the energies they put out. All these things will help you grow.

  1. Attend Pagan Gatherings

Get out of your mundane world and attend a pagan gathering. You strengthen bonds with others and your Gods. You can learn from fellow witches and other magickal people.

Many witches find that at gatherings, they can express themselves as their creative selves. Some witches find it uplifting to offer a workshop about something they really love about being a witch.

How Witches Use Movement to Create Magickal Energy

“When you use movement, you’re creating power,” I responded to a friend after she attended her first coven gathering.

“So, that’s what you and your coven mates were doing when you all pointed your athames to the East?” she said.

I nodded.

When I was eight years old, I naturally set up an altar in the woods. I also walked around and settled quietly. Birds would approach because they found my energy to be inviting and peaceful.

As I grew older, and spiritual elders taught me about Wicca, I noticed some details about Wiccans and movement.

Here are three insights:

  1. Movement creates energy

Some covens use instruments like drums to create movement and sound. People will clap their hands and sometimes use dance to create energy. Once you’ve cleansed the area, you can use movement to create the type of energy you desire.

  1. Your body functions better when you honor it by moving

Some spiritual paths focus on the rational mind. In such paths, we notice a big emphasis on scriptures and arguing about what certain passages mean.

On the other hand, Wicca honors nature, intuition, and the temple (body) we have been given. My habit of having a daily walk helps me raise energy better when I gather with coven mates.

  1. Having a sedentary lifestyle actually hurts your spiritual practice

Neuroscientists note that the brain likes to conserve energy. Making decisions uses up energy. In fact, researchers talk about decision fatigue. By the end of the day, a person can be too tired to take a daily walk. I’ve noticed that it’s like a machine that rusts by just sitting there.

Some people like to live in their heads. Instead, Wicca calls on us to move every day. I remember a spiritual elder said, “Be a good animal.” This reminds me that my body wants to move. It was designed to move. Earlier in my life, when I was 40 pounds heavier, being heavy enticed me to just sit and not move.

Now, I’m more conscious that getting in daily exercise is part of my spiritual path. I want my body to help me create energy in rituals.

How Witches Deal with the Mundane World Pushing the Opposite of Goddess’s Vision

Have you been feeling under pressure? Are you only seeing scarcity? Recently, I had a conversation with a friend, and we noticed that so much of the Mundane World is about pushing a story about scarcity and lack.

So much of the media that push products on us is about the message: “There’s a reason you feel bad. You don’t have [product]. Only if you had [product], then you’d feel better about yourself and your life. … By the way, don’t you deserve to have [product]?”

I’ve noticed that the Mundane World messages of scarcity and lack come across as the opposite of Goddess’s vision.

  1. Goddess Wants You to Call on Her

“Whenever ye have need of anything, once in a month, and better it be when the Moon be full, then ye shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all Witcheries.” – Doreen Valiente, writing in the voice of the Goddess in The Charge of the Goddess

The Mundane World says that you are not enough and that you need to get things in order to feel happy. On the other hand, Goddess has already given you what you really need: Your senses, this Earth, your body and your spirit. Goddess has placed divinity within you. Still, she says “whenever ye have need of anything … assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me.” So, the answer is not to buy more stuff, it is to support your relationship with the Goddess by gathering and doing ritual.

  1. Goddess Wants You to Be Free

“And ye shall be free from slavery.” – Doreen Valiente, writing in the voice of the Goddess in The Charge of the Goddess

You can be a slave to a lot of things. One bad form of slavery is to be beholden to trying to please everyone. I have a big problem with this one. I want to make my loved ones happy. But on some level, it’s impossible to do this. Because this is impossible to do, I fail. With clinical depression symptoms, it is easy for me to spiral down into self-hate.

Instead, from this moment forward, I want to focus on this prayer.

Prayer for Real Freedom

Goddess,
Cradle me in Your arms
Like the Loving Mother You are
Teach me to stay on the path of love and appreciation
For myself and others.
Let me remember that my mind is my own
And my will is my own.
Let me realize that the Mundane World’s messages of
Scarcity, lack and “you are not enough” are illusions.
Let me feel in my heart
That You are the Gracious Goddess
Fully supporting me.
So Mote It Be.

How Veteran Witches Can Avoid Traps that Stunt Your Spiritual Growth

“What are real traps that veteran witches can fall into?” my friend, Amanda, asked.

I thought about this over a couple days, and certain ideas rose into my thoughts.

  1. Avoid becoming stale in your practice

It’s understandable that many of us fall into a comfortable pattern. This is a path created by not trying new things. Instead, consider writing your own rituals and spells. In my books, I’ve shared a number of rituals, and you can use prewritten rituals as inspiration—on your way to creating your own original rituals.

  1. Avoid getting stuck in comparison patterns

I’ve talked with a number of fellow witches. Sometimes, I get surprised at how certain people compare themselves with spiritual elders. One of my friends said, “I cannot even breathe the same air as [a particular spiritual elder].”

I’ve noticed that all we get from such comparisons is misery. It also restricts us from even trying to expand our spiritual practice. Instead, I suggest that you focus on your own path and get into a place of acceptance that everybody else is on their own separate journey. How soon and what we learn is an individualized experience.

  1. Step away from feeling superior to a novice

In different circles, we hear about certain authors or teachers who seem to come across like they feel they’re superior to their readers or students. This is a trap.

When we get stuck in any focus on our own ego, we’re basically putting a restriction on our spiritual growth. Over the years as I’ve answered many questions, I have found it truly helpful that students will ask me things that will spark new ideas.

At times, I need to do research or talk with spiritual elders so that I can provide useful material. This is an example in which a student can bring a fresh approach that can uplift us all.

I’ve learned that having a healthy approach with humility clears the path to spiritual growth.
