How Witches Clear Their Thinking and Free Up Their Future

“Oh, Jessica, you’re so cynical,” my friend, Amy, said.

“I’m not cynical. I’m skeptical,” Jessica, my other friend, replied.

The difference between cynical and skeptical is important.

To me, cynical has a negative connotation. It’s like you won’t give an idea some true consideration. You have already made up your mind about the idea. On the other hand, skeptical is: You are willing to listen to the idea and more information. You really think about it. You are willing to bring in more evidence. I’ve noticed that some people take a certain cynical approach that shuts down the conversation.

I’m concerned that cynical can lead to a “negative self-fulfilling prophesy.” For example, Susan,  as a young child, was told that she was fat. Even though she was quite thin. She totally believed that she was fat. She became cynical. She wouldn’t even let in the idea that she might be an appropriate weight. Later in life, she gained a lot of weight. Having a habitual cynical approach, Susan didn’t even try to change her habits because she already believed she was a lost cause.

This reminds me of the Thirteenth Principle of The Thirteen Principles of Wiccan Belief.

We believe that we should seek within Nature that which is contributory to our health and well-being.” The Thirteenth Principle of The Thirteen Principles of Wiccan Belief, assembled by The American Council of Witches

Now, in the present, Susan has a new choice. She can listen to the Gods. Unfortunately, listening to cruel human beings during her youth created a sour, cynical approach in Susan.

Let’s remember that whatever happened in the past is like an early chapter in a book. Something new and better can happen in your current, new chapter of life.

Now, Susan can listen to the Gods. She can focus on natural foods that the Gods provide. She can shift her choices about junk food. She can look to the natural world (echoing The Thirteenth Principle of Wiccan Belief) for healing. She can ask the God and Goddess for guidance. This is something I discuss in my online course Goddess Style Weight Loss.

Looking at the example above, we can see how a cynical mind can cause a lot of suffering.

I invite you to consider dropping cynical in favor of skeptical. Skeptical can be valuable for us to check out the data and evidence. We will also need to try new things and make decisions based on our new experiences.

I’ve noticed that taking a cynical approach can, at times, lead to a closed mind. Having a closed mind can cause much suffering and fear. You close off any new data when you are cynical. In effect, this stops your growth as a being and an individual.

You are here to learn. Assess if you’re being cynical or skeptical.

So, remember to listen to Nature—“the teacher” of our class. Look to Nature and learn.

How Witches Stay Calm While People Are Panicking Near Them

Would you like to return to the wisdom of Wicca during this troubling time?

Here are three insights to support you:

  1. Limit your exposure to panic-inducing input

Are you glued to the T.V. or your smartphone—watching people repeat over and over the terrible news about the coronavirus and plunging stock market?

Consider that you may feel better by limiting how much repetitive, stressful messages you’re hearing … all day long.

Imagine taking a break. Time to breathe in. Gently. In … and … out.

How about limiting your exposure to the news/social media to once per 4 hours?

I remember being in a relative’s house during the 911 Tragedies. After seeing a bit of news, I went upstairs and took a break. I’d check back 4 hours later.

Give yourself a well-deserved break.

The news is designed to keep you there through commercials. What seizes attention? Crisis, disaster, and agony.

Instead, Wiccans, when we pause, realize that the Gods have given us so many blessings. That’s right!—there is more to life than misery.

  1. Focus on the Gods for real safety

 “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” – Carl Rogers

The Gods love us. We have more than soap protecting us.

I realize that the good life is a process of turning my attention back to the Gods—over and over throughout the day.

Sure, one’s body may be hurt. But your soul, the divinity that the Gods put in you, that is the source of your true strength and your true peace.

Repeat to yourself—through the day—chants and prayers to the Gods. This is a real source of inner strength and real hope.

  1. Devote time to de-stress.

Every day, I take a walk with my sweetheart. We remind ourselves to connect with the blessings of the Gods. How? We say “Sky—tree.” That reminds us to look up and see the lovely sky and trees. Wiccans know that we are connected to the natural world. The trees are our friends.

How Witches Stay Energetic During the Holiday Rush

Do you feel like you’re running on empty? During the Holiday Rush, we, witches, need to take extra care so we stay balanced.

Here are some helpful insights.

  • Get enough rest

How is your sleep? Do you get enough?

You probably have heard of sleep hygiene, which includes habits and practices that help one get great sleep daily.

Related to sleep hygiene, here are some details you might consider:

  1. Have a cup of chamomile tea. Chamomile is great for helping you relax.
  2. Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time—every day.
  3. Say a prayer for sleep.

A Prayer for Sleep

Lord and Lady, I ask for peaceful rest,
That my dreams be pleasant and enjoyable.
Let me sleep long and deep for maximum rejuvenation.
So Mote It Be.

  • Get enough exercise

Walking in nature is a wonderful way to get your exercise. I walk every day and talk to my Gods to share how my day is going.

Walking is a gentle form of exercise. It’s especially good for me because I deal with asthma.

Don’t have a lot of time? Walk during your lunchtime or coffee break.

As witches, we know that keeping your body in shape can help you raise energy. Your body will function well and that makes it easier to raise energy.

  • Remember to do ritual

Perhaps, you’ve noticed this: Witches know that doing a ritual can raise our personal energy, but many of us do not feel we have enough energy to do a ritual. This feels like a bad dilemma.

I’ve found a solution: Pick the easiest and simplest ritual … and do it now! This sounds basic, but I’ve learned that it’s important to go into action as soon as you think about doing a ritual (if this fits your life).

Something as simple as a candle-lighting ritual to give thanks can go a long way to replenishing your energy.

My constant readers know that I emphasize meditation. Again, I suggest simple and easy. Consider starting with just a 5-minute session.

I’ll add one more detail about making meditation easier. My husband has finally found a position in which he does not strain his back. He lays flat on his back with his knees up. Now, he avoids dreading a physical strain to accomplish a brief meditation session.

Usually, I avoid suggesting that one recline on one’s back because one may fall asleep. As the old phrase goes: Your mileage may vary.

How Witches Release Themselves from Body Type Shame

Are you, like me, feeling pressed down by the media stereotypes about beauty and an appropriate body type?

When I talk about body type, I make a significant distinction between what is healthy and the garbage of media stereotypes, showing fashion models who are actually physically sick and are too skinny.

We, women who are pagans, intellectually know that Goddess delights in many body types. However, the overwhelming pressure from the media to look in a certain, stereotypical way causes so much pain and suffering.

Let me express this from my heart. My own mother is morbidly obese, and she has serious suffering connected to her diabetes. She only walks short distances in the home, and she grunts in pain with every step.

Seeing my mother’s plight, I realized that I had to do something about how I exercise and how I connected with Goddess. I had to develop a way of eating so that I could stay healthy and avoid getting diabetes. With the help of spiritual elders, doctors, psychiatrists, and other professionals, I devoted myself (and a circle of team members working tens of hours) to create my online course Goddess Style Weight Loss.

How Witches Use Spell Work to Feel Better

Ever get sick? Not just a cold. I mean, have you been really sick?

When I’m in such a tough time, I make space to get more rest (during which I ask for the Gods’ healing). Then there’s chicken soup—lots of it.

When I’m really physically ill, I ask for my coven’s help.

A Spell of Healing

 What you will need:

  • One Blue Candle
  • Healing oil (or extra virgin olive oil)
  • Candle Holder
  • Three Stones (your choice) – Moss Agate, Axinite, Beryllonite, Crocoite, Red Jade
  • Your Ritual Tools
  • Chamomile Tea
  • The Sick Person
  • Chicken Noodle Soup (or other appropriate soup)
  • Warm freshly laundered blanket to be blessed
  • Rattle

On your altar, place the Blue Candle. Add healing stones around the candle in the form of a triangle. Put the warmed-up soup on the altar next to the candle on the left. Place the blanket on the right with the rattle on top of it and the Chamomile Tea behind the Blue Candle.

In your Circle the altar will be in the north section. The sick person sits in the middle of the Circle.

Cast your Circle.

Bless the rattle, stones, tea, Blue Candle, soup and blanket by holding each in turn saying:

I do bless this (name of item) that it may heal by the Gods’ hands.

Dress your candle with the healing oil, rubbing from wick to base.

And say:

I pull healing energy to (Name of Person).

 Light the Blue Candle and say:

I now heal (Name of Person).

Shake the rattle above the sick person’s head while they take a sip of the soup. Next, with the soup, you walk widdershins (the opposite of clockwise) around the cast Circle’s edge.

At each quarter, say:

West:
With this soup, I banish all illness from the blood

South:
With this soup, I banish all illness from the spirit

 East:
With this soup, I banish all illness from the breath

North:
With this soup, I banish all illness from this body! So, Mote It Be!

Bring the soup to the sick person. Have them partake of the soup again. Shake the rattle over the sick person’s head, as the person eats the soup, and say:

I cleanse you of all illness.

 Go to the alar and pick up the cup of tea.

Have the sick person take a sip of the tea. With the tea, you walk widdershins (the opposite of clockwise) around the cast Circle’s edge.

At each quarter starting with the West, say:

West:
With this tea, I banish all illness from the blood

South:
With this tea, I banish all illness from the spirit

East:
With this tea, I banish all illness from the breath

North:
With this tea, I banish all illness from this body! So, Mote It Be!

Bring the tea to the sick person. Have them partake of the tea again. Shake the rattle, as the person drinks the tea, and say:

I cleanse you of all illness.

At the altar, hold your athame over the blanket and say:

I call all healing energies to infuse this blanket.

Let it heal the body as well as the soul.

Wrap the blanket around the sick person saying:

You are healed with the Gods’ love.

 Do the Cakes and Wine Ceremony.

Close your Circle.

Give the person space to rest and recover.

May this rite bring healing to you or someone dear to you.

How Witches Can Get Their Inner Critic to Shut Up

Do you beat yourself up emotionally? Perhaps, you’ve heard of the Inner Critic.

I have an Inner Critic. She is loud and sometimes in charge. So many times, this Inner Critic not only whispers in my ear but screams at the top of her lungs.

Sometimes, she says, “You’re no good.” Other times she says “You’re too fat … and too stupid.” Too often, this Inner Critic flings me into an overwhelming hopeless feeling.

Maybe, you can relate to this?

One time, when I was feeling particularly down, one of my friends said, “I get it. You have clinical depression symptoms. I’m just wondering if you have some part of you that stands to the side. A part of you that is not caught up in self-hatred. Do you have an … Inner Nurturer?”

What about an Inner Nurturer?

Before that moment, I had never heard this idea, Inner Nurturer. Just imagine, a part of yourself who is on your side. Your Inner Nurturer holds your hand through the tough times.

Maybe, my Inner Nurturer is mirroring what the Goddess would say to me.*

I was intrigued by this Inner Nurturer idea. So, I asked my friend to continue. He said, “It could be like this: Your Inner Critic is like a cup of inky water.  And, the Inner Nurturer helps you by filling the inky-water cup with clean spring water. Over time, the ink runs over the edge of the cup, and you’re left with the clean spring water.”

How Can We Fill Up with “Clean, Spring Water”?

I thought about my friend’s story and realized the Inner Nurturer is the Goddess and God.

We reach the God and Goddess through meditation, ritual, and prayer.

Many times, I have let the Inner Critic run my mind. The solution is for me to connect with the God and Goddess more often. More times for meditation, ritual, and prayer. Then, I can banish the Inner Critic—even for a short time.

Look at Your Life with Goddess’s Eyes

How is life going for you? Are you feeling pressured with work, family, friends, and personal pursuits?

If so, I’m with you. It can be hard to prioritize what to do when obligations weigh heavily on your shoulders.

Then, I had an intuitive nudge. It’s embodied in this question: How would Goddess help me prioritize for my enjoying a fulfilling life?”

  1. Goddess wants you to grow

Goddess wants all Her children to grow. This means learning our lessons and conquering our fears.

What kind of lessons? This varies by the individual. You set up your goals for your lessons before you were born. These lessons can be things like forgiveness, handling fear, or finding love for yourself.

  1. Goddess encourages you to prioritize your health and safety

I realize that I have sometimes, faltered about my own health. Sometimes, I’ve hesitated to go to the Emergency Room when my asthma was overwhelming.

How about you? Are you prioritizing your health? Good sleep, good nutrition, time devoted to nurturing your relationships …

Let’s remember that Goddess wants us to care for ourselves. After all, our bodies are the temples of the Gods. Goddess wants us to be healthy and happy while we are on this earth.

  1. Goddess wants a better connection with you

Sometimes, I get the impression that Goddess might say, “It’d be nice if you called once in a while.” How? We can do ritual and have meditation sessions to connect with the Goddess and God. Even a 5-minute meditation session is better than nothing.

Wiccans Claim Their Real Freedom

When do we really have freedom?

I’ve learned that it is hard to make a healthy choice when you’re in the middle of chaos or stress.

So, what is the solution? Make the choice when things are quiet.

Wiccans, I’ve talked with, mention how they’d like to feel better. In this post, I’ll talk about how you can get to a place of inner quiet. More than that, I’ll show how you can charge a talisman, so you’ll have it available for a stressful moment.

When you make a choice during a quiet time, you can later, during stress, make the healthy choice automatically. In this way you avoid having to make the choice again and again. (Sometimes, we do not have the extra energy to make the healthy choice at that time.)

For example, my husband decided to eliminate peanut butter and apricot preserves from his daily diet. He made the choice once (when he wasn’t hungry.) It has helped him drop 15 lbs. permanently. I have used Goddess Style Weight Loss that I share in my book, and I have dropped 50 lbs. so far.

Charging Your Talisman

Often, Wiccans choose a talisman that can fit into their pocket.

Some suggestions are:

  • A worry stone
  • A crystal or mineral that is smooth to the touch
  • A piece of smooth and sanded wood

Pick something that helps you feel comforted.

Charging and Using Your Talisman Ritual

What you will need:

  • Your talisman
  • Brown chime candle
  • Candle holder
  • White candles
  • White bath robe (or a different color that you prefer)
  • White fresh bath towel
  • Chamomile tea
  • Cakes and wine
  • Gardenia incense
  • Gardenia oil
  • Relaxing music
  • Kosher salt
  • Altar
  • Ritual tools

What to do:

Conduct this ritual during a waning moon and when you will not be disturbed.

Set up your altar and place your talisman in the middle of the altar. Next draw your ritual bath.

Add your kosher salt, three tablespoons.

Light the white candles and burn some of the incense for the bath. Play some soothing music on a device safely away from the bathtub.

Drink the tea, then recline in the bath water. Feel the soothing water. Close your eyes and envision all the stress and negative energy dispersing and being absorbed by the bath water.

Deep breathe and relax.

Stay in the bath until all the stress and negative energies are gone from your body. Remain as long as you like.

Once you have finished your ritual bath, dry off with your fresh clean white towel. Put on your clean bath robe.

Next, go to your altar area and cast your circle. Then, sit in front of your altar in a comfortable position.

Cleanse and consecrate your oil and brown candle. Then, dress your candle with the oil—from base to wick. (This pushes the bad stuff away from you.)

Cleanse and consecrate your talisman and rub some of the oil on it as well.

Place the talisman in front of the brown candle.

Light the candle and say:

Fear, stress and sadness, I fling you away
During the madness here with me today.
Let this talisman disperse all my worries and fears away,
Replace with calm and peace for me to stay.
As I So Will
So Mote it Be.

Do the Cakes and Wine ceremony.

Close Your Circle.

Carry your talisman with you. When you start to feel overwhelmed, rub it and feel the negative feelings pulled away and into the talisman. Your talisman neutralizes your negative feelings.

Let this ritual bring you peace in your heart and soul.

How Wiccans Get Close to The Source

“I know what to do, but I don’t do it to get close to the God and Goddess,” my friend, Jennifer, said.

This has been a conundrum that I have faced in my own life, and I’ve heard about it often from other Wiccans.

Why?

No time and no energy.

This seems ironic in that holding ritual is for generating energy. It’s supposed to uplift you.

It appears that many of us are plagued with some self-sabotaging habits.

Here, we’ll address the no time and no energy problem. 

  1. Do something

Light a candle and say thank you to the God and Goddess. Say a prayer. Read a page from a spiritual book. Set aside 5 minutes for a meditation. Simply talk to the Gods.

  1. Invite a friend or family member to join you in a candle-lighting ritual for 3 minutes

This is something that can help you feel supported. If you have a supportive friend or family member, you could invite them to join with you—as you do a simple candle-lighting ritual. You can hold the loved one’s hands, and you could complete the process by saying a prayer. Then, give your loved one a hug.

May these methods empower you on your spiritual path.

The Wiccan View: How to Know Why You Are Here on This Planet

“So much doesn’t make sense now,” my friend, Jacob, said.

“I can guess some of what you’re referring to,” I replied. “Is there something specific that really bothers you?”

“I … I guess. I don’t know why things have to be so screwed up. I feel really bad,” he said.

This began an extended conversation that left me thinking deeply.

So much of what bothers us comes down to asking “Why?”

And then the big question: “Why am I here?”

I have often looked on the earth as a classroom.

So, then the question might take on a new tint, “What am I here to learn?”

The next thought is: “To find out what you must learn, think of… What triggers you? What makes you sad, scared or angry?”

Deep meditation holds the key to the mystery.

Triggers Meditation

Find a quiet somewhere you know you will not be disturbed. Turn off your phone and choose a place to sit comfortably. Keep your back straight.

The Meditation

[Consider recording the following words on your smartphone, and then you can play the recording back. In this way, you would be guided through the process by your own voice.]

First, close your eyes. Notice that the light begins to fade around you. Slowly at first, then it gets darker and darker. Until you are in total darkness, where you feel safe and secure.

(Pause)

Then, just as the darkness came, it leaves. The light returns, slowly at first. Gradually, it gets brighter and brighter. Notice you are in a new place—standing inside a great temple. In front, you find a large stone altar, and you step up to it.

On the altar’s right, you see a large cauldron. Within it, fire burns brightly. It is warm and soothing.

Turning back to the altar, you view three objects resting on the smooth surface. Each of these objects represents a trigger in you. They can represent any belief that keeps you sad, scared or angry.

Picking up the first object, you examine it closely. It is round and light.

(Pause)

You aim the object at the cauldron and continue to feel the warmth of the fire. Toss the object into the fire, and watch as it is consumed by the flames.

Smoke rises from the burning ball. You marvel as you see something in the smoke. Realize that this object in the smoke represents an unknown trigger inside you. Perhaps, it is the source of your sadness or fear—or anger.

(Pause)

Go to the altar. Pick up the second object. Examine it and notice it is round and light.

(Pause)

You aim the object at the cauldron and continue to feel the warmth of the fire. Toss the object into the fire, and watch as it is consumed by the flames.

Smoke rises from the burning ball. You marvel as you see something in the smoke.  Realize that this object in the smoke represents an unknown trigger inside you. Perhaps, it is the source of your sadness or fear—or anger.

(Pause)

Turn to the final object on the altar. Pick up this last object and examine it, finding it to be round and light.

(Pause)

You aim the object at the cauldron and continue to feel the warmth of the fire. Toss the object into the fire, and watch as it is consumed by the flames.

Smoke rises from the burning ball. You marvel as you see something in the smoke.  Realize that this object in the smoke represents an unknown trigger inside you. Perhaps, it is the source of your sadness or fear—or anger.

(Pause)

Step back from the cauldron. Notice something that you didn’t perceive before. Now resting on the left side of the altar, you find a small silver chest—about the size of a shoebox.

Feel something in your pocket. Pull out the object—the key of knowledge and truth. You find the place to insert the key into the chest. Upon using the key, you hear a quiet click, and the chest opens.

Inside, you see three new and different objects. Pick them up and then find a comfortable place to sit down. Realize that these objects represent three positive truths. These objects are the keys to learning how to grow beyond your old triggers.

(Pause)

Your time here is done. Place these new objects safely into your pocket.

Breathe deeply. One … Two … Three. Notice the light begins to fade around you. Slowly at first, it gets darker and darker. Until you are in total darkness, where you feel safe and secure.

(Pause)

Then, just as the darkness came, it leaves. The light returns, slowly at first. Gradually, it gets brighter and brighter. The light is back. Now open your eyes and see you are back from your meditation. You are safe, feeling refreshed.
