How Witches Deal with Being Triggered

“That’s it. I can’t watch broadcast news anymore. It beats me up emotionally,” my friend, John, said.

At this moment, it seems like it can’t get any worse, and then it does.

Numerous things on social media and in broadcast news stories are designed to trigger a big emotional reaction. My question is: What do we, witches, do as the next step?”

I have three insights for you:

  1. Invite the Gods to create calm within you.

You can pick a word that you say to yourself to help you calm down. Set up this word in your meditation sessions.

Here is the process:

Pick a word that does not rise in everyday conversations.

Tie 13 knots, spaced at even intervals, into a piece of cord. (You will use this cord or beads as shown in the photo above, during your meditation session.)

During a meditation session, invite the Gods to help you shift to calm and peace with that word.

Say the word one time per knot. You move your hand to a new knot each time you repeat the word. Repeat this process three times.

You have used this process to ask the Gods to support you in having a way to rise out of an emotional reaction.

Keep up your daily meditations. You’ll want to continue to do grounding, centering, and meditation sessions, so your word continues to have the power to help you shift to a calm response.

  1. Ask, “How does the Goddess look at this?”

My first impression is that the Goddess may have a response of sadness. Goddess wants you and all her children to experience love on a deep level. She wants Her children to remember that love is one of her rituals. She invites us to remember that each person has some divinity within them. Each person is worthy of love and caring—even if, at the moment, the human being has strayed into negative behaviors.

Goddess also has an expansive view. She knows that incidents in our life can be a starting point for divine lessons.

  1. Plan your ways to recover from being triggered.

Above we talked about using a selected word to help you shift to a higher level or higher frequency of energy.

Here I’ll share the process of recovering when you are triggered by an event.

a) Remove yourself from the negative triggering event

For example, if you saw a triggering meme on Facebook, you could close down Facebook. When you realize that some information is poisoning you, you can shut the door on it.

b) Read a spiritual text

Often, when a person reads a spiritual text, they can shift to an expansive perspective. If you have a Book of Shadows (BOS), read it. You could listen to an uplifting book on your audio player.

Reading something uplifting helps you combat Brain Sludge—the junk thoughts that accumulate in your mind. So, reading and meditation can help clear out Brain Sludge.

c) Take a ritual bath

This ritual can help you eliminate negative energy. You could also cleanse yourself with sage before and after the ritual bath.

How You Can Make Your Own Spells and Perform Others’ Spells, or Even Make a Book of Shadows

Making your own spells and working with spells authored by others is both simple and complex.

Here is how magick works.

Intent

To do successful magick, you need to understand several things. First, you must have intent. You need to know what you want to manifest. I know this sounds simple, but many people just don’t think the intent through.

Let’s say you want a car. Okay, why do you want a car? Is it to take you to your job? Or is it something you want to have people envy?  Hey, I don’t judge. But if you just say “I want a car” to the universe, you are likely to get that Pinto down the block.

Let’s say you just moved to a new area and you need a car to get you around. You want something nice but economical. You don’t want a piece of junk that will break down on you every chance it gets. I suggest you go shopping, perhaps, on the internet. Get to know what you want and like for your car.

When you pick out features, you’re attaching specific desires to the car. This will help manifest the car you want versus the junk heap down the block. Refine your image of the perfect car in your mind. Include other requirements you have like good gas mileage and inexpensive repair costs. The more specific you are with your intent, the less there will be unexpected results like getting the lemon down the lane.

Having a solid intent is your first step before you do any magick. Once you have that cornerstone set you can continue with the second thing which is concentration. During your spell, you will need lots of concentration and visualization.

Visualization

 We’ll continue with the process of manifesting a particular car. You can use a toy car as a visualization focus object. As you stare at the toy car, you also use your mind to imagine getting into a real car and driving it. You can even take a number of steps further. For instance, if you desire a convertible car, you imagine the wind blowing through your hair as you drive with the top down.

Concentration

This is the process of focusing and then refocusing your mind on your visualization task. In essence, you concentrate on the object and on the images in your mind that are specific for your desired manifestation. It is natural for the mind to wander at times. When it does, you just consciously redirect your mind to focus on the visualization object once again.

Meditation

Some Wiccans begin with a meditation to clear the mind before using both concentration and visualization. Consider doing a simple meditation in which you focus on your breath.

Willpower

The Collins English Dictionary defines willpower as “the ability to control oneself and determine one’s actions.”

Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., author of The Willpower Instinct, wrote: “Willpower is about harnessing the three powers of I will, I won’t and I want to help you to achieve your goals (and stay out of trouble).”

When it comes to successfully performing magick, willpower, to me, means the driving force of desire for some form of change. So, I focus on the power of “I will.” This is an important distinction because many people think of willpower as only the ability to avoid temptation.

The compelling observation is that Wiccans, who become proficient at these three processes of visualization, concentration, and meditation, actually strengthen their will. How? Once you do the three processes, you actually enhance your belief, and you push through your doubt.

Realize, you need to will something into being. This includes confidence that what you are doing will work. If you don’t have that, your spell just won’t become a reality.

You need your will for your intent to be as strong as possible. This is why when we are desperate for something, we can usually manifest it. Using your will is deeply rooted in your desire. Lack of will just creates another belly flop.

I’ve now shared with you the five must-haves (intent, visualization, concentration, meditation, and willpower) for doing magick that works.

We use the natural energies around us to create change with Intent, Visualization, Concentration, and Will, helped by meditation.

Making your own spells

The Strongest Spells Are Ones You Create Personally

Reading books is a good start. But I suggest the strongest spells are ones you make yourself. Just because a spell is in a book doesn’t mean that it’s the right spell for the job at hand.

The Value of Customizing Your Spell

Here are the benefits you gain from customizing your spell:

  • Creating your own spells is a good way of learning the ropes.
  • You gain a better grasp of the fundamentals in Wicca as a spiritual path.
  • You become a better practitioner.
  • You tailor the spell to you and your unique situation.

Previously at my blog, I offered what I call “Moonwater’s Formula for Making a Spell”:

The following is a simplified way to create a spell.

5-Step Formula for Making a Spell

It comes down to these steps or what I call the “5 What’s”:

  1. What do you want?
  2. What element?
  3. What will represent that element?
  4. What do you have at hand?
  5. What words?
  1. What do I want?

Seems simple enough, right? Still, many people hold the thought “I want more money.” That’s too vague. What do you want the money for? Some people have a job that pays well enough, but they hate that job. So what do they do? They buy expensive stuff and vacations. Perhaps, what they really want is a job that they feel good about.

Now, ask yourself: What do I want? Then ask yourself, No….What do I really want? Keep refining it until you have it. Finding the root of the need is important.

  1. What element?

How do you pick the appropriate element? Think about your need. What element is connected to it?

  • Do you want to flow better at work? That relates to Water.
  • Do you want to think more clearly? That’s related to the element Air.
  • If you want more energy, you likely want to connect with the spark – with Fire.
  • Do you feel scattered? To connect with being grounded, focus on Earth.

Questions like these will help you pick what element is best suited for your problem or desire.

  1. What will represent that element?

What object would make a good representation of your element? If it’s Fire, perhaps, a lit candle. If it’s water, you could use a sea shell because it comes from the sea.

  1. What do you have at hand?

With a list of objects that can represent your element, take a look, and see what you have on hand that would fit the bill. Perhaps your first thought was to use a shell as part of your spell. However, you do not have one in your home. You could simply grab a bowl and fill it with water.

  1. What words?

The words you choose are important.

Here are three details to help you.

  • Choose an opening
    Here’s an example:
    By the powers of the Sun and Moon
    Give a deadline

Here’s an example:
So make this happen nine days or less
Put in the protection phrases
Here is an example:
An it harm none.

I also include “This or better.” There are times with the God and Goddess know better than we do what would be good for our overall journey of life.

Additionally, give a time period for the spell to stop. You can say something like may it come to pass within three moons. (Spells usually come to pass within one moon cycle.)

May the above details help you in forming your spell. It’s true that one may add other details to a spell. Still, the above provides you with a good start.

The various parts of your spell are like the pieces you put together when sewing a quilted blanket.”

Doing spell work is truly work. And, fortunately, you can improve your spell work skills. Use the simple processes below to improve your success rate.

Moon Phase

Many Wiccans make a big mistake of failing to look at the moon phase before doing a spell. Because Sara didn’t look at the moon when she did her prosperity spell, she missed the vital detail that the moon was waning. That’s a problem because the waning moon is for decreasing work. She did not want her income to decrease!

What could Sara have done to have more money in her purse? She could have done a spell to decrease the size of her bills.

The truth is: You can do many spells at any time if you word the spell correctly.

As many Wiccans know, the waxing moon is for increase so it would have been better if Sara waited for the waxing moon if she wanted to stay with the original form of her prosperity spell.

Days of the Week

Another strategy for making your spell more potent is to use the correct day of the week. Plan to do your spell on the day that rules what you are seeking to accomplish. Supercharge your spell work by adding the correct moon phase, day, and planetary hour. Using these strategies adds energy to your spell.

And this helps your intention, through your spell work, find its mark.

What a Book of Shadows Is and How to Make One

Book of shadows or (BOS) for short is where you store all your magickal experiences, magickal recipes, Spells, etc.

They can be anything from leather-bound books to a three-ring binder.

Making one is simple and I prefer the three-ring binder so I can move pages around and organize easier. You can also have a different book for each subject too if you want. I would suggest these categories to start with.

  • Spells
  • Herbs
  • Dreams
  • Sacred alphabets – Norse Runes, Theban, etc.
  • Recipes
  • Divination

You write down it all, your experiences, your actions, and results.

In this way, you can keep track of it all and see what works for you and what doesn’t.

How Witches Shift Away from Worries

Are you worried? If so, I’m right here with you. Currently, my family is enduring some truly difficult problems. It’s taking my education from spiritual elders and experience in the Craft to help me cope with the worries.

Along this line, I’m sharing three insights.

  1. Focus on doing your ritual

Doing ritual is a way to really clear your head. Aim to standardize your Circle Casting. This routine will put you into a certain frame of mind. You’ll focus on the task at hand (your rite) and not the mundane-world problems you may be enduring.

A ritual can release you from a stagnant way of thinking and feeling. Consider this simple bathing ritual. See how to take a ritual bath here.

  1. Talk to the Gods through meditation

Taking to the Gods can help you figure things out.

A number of witches express how tough it is to settle into their meditation session. For that reason, I wrote my post How Witches Settle from Chaos into Their Meditation Session. That post’s suggestions can help you transition into your peaceful meditation session

Once you enter meditation, you can meet the God and Goddess and have a conversation with Them about your worries.

  1. Say a prayer for transformation

When they’re caught up in worries, witches often discover a need to experience transformation. A prayer can help.

 Goddess,
Shift me from worries
To possibilities
From fear
To new skills
From being stagnant
To Transformation in my life.
Let me not stay stuck in limited thinking
Guide my mind to open to new possibilities.
As I So Will, So Mote It Be

How Witches Settle from Chaos into Their Meditation Session

“When I’m worried, I don’t want to settle down into a meditation session,” my friend, Jessica, said.

“What’s happening then?” I asked.

“If I settle down, then it would just be me and the worries—in the silence. I’d rather have my iPod on loud and stay busy. I want to be distracted,” she said.

I learned that a number of people have difficulties about settling down with a chaotic mind when they start a meditation session.

I have three insights you can apply to beginning a meditation session.

  1. Focus on your breathing

When you simply focus on your breath coming in and then flowing outwards, you can begin to calm down. The practice of slow, calm breaths can also help in other aspects of your life. The good news is that when you practice slow, calm breaths in meditation sessions, you can bring this conditioning to your stressful times with family or at work.

Anytime your mind wanders, redirect your attention to your gentle breathing in and out. Notice if your breath is fast or shallow. If so, slow down your breath and deepen it. Just concentrating on your breath will help you still your mind.

2. Repeat a phrase or mantra.
Once you have your breathing in a slow, deep, rhythmic pattern, you can then repeat a phrase or a mantra in your mind.

I’ll distinguish here between a helpful mantra and a stress-causing, old-fashioned affirmation*.

Here is an example of a helpful mantra: Goddess supports me in peace. This form of mantra is specific to this present moment.

(*On the other hand, a stress-causing, old-fashioned affirmation can sound like: “I am skinny.” This can cause stress if you feel a big gap between your present situation and your wish to have a different form of body shape.)

3. Begin with a set pattern
You can repeat the mantra while you meditate. Additionally, you can use another form of set pattern.

Here are some examples:

  1. Visualize that you’re walking down the steps of a staircase. This can help you go deeper during your meditation.
  2. Visualize that you’re standing in the middle of Standing Stones. For example, one set of Standing Stones is Stonehenge.
  3. Visualize that you’re sitting in a Sacred Grove of Oak Trees or another sacred spot.

Once you settle on a starting point, you can meet the God and Goddess there. In this way you can converse and devote time with the Gods.

May the above methods support your meditation practice.

How Witches Deal with “Tired of Being Afraid”

“How are you doing?” my friend, Sarah, asked me some time ago.

“I’m tired of being afraid,” I replied.

How about you? Do you find that much of your day is clouded by your feeling fearful?

  1. Identify the moments of “Calm Acceptance in this present moment.”

I’ve learned that much of fear is connected to focusing on the future.

I remember this quote:

“I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” – Mark Twain

This quote reminds me that much that I’m afraid of is likely not to happen. For example, I was living in a particular location, and I thought that I would get kicked out. The truth is: I lived in that place for several years, and things were relatively peaceful.

In recent years, I’ve focused on this idea: Calm Acceptance. When I need to get to Calm Acceptance, I focus on the here and now. I look at this present moment and think about just taking one step at a time. My starting point is to realize I can only deal with this moment. Then I shift into the understanding that I am doing the best that I can.

  1. Shift to the focus on “The Gods will guide me to what I need to do.”

To help me shift to Calm Acceptance, I center my thoughts on The Gods will guide me to what I need to do. I ask the Gods to guide my actions for the best outcome.

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who taught comparative religion. He noted that in some spiritual paths, there is an idea: “You are having a human life which includes just enough problems so you need to shift into guiding your mind to peace.”

Holding my faith that the Gods will guide me to what I need to do helps me to return to Calm Acceptance. Furthermore, I have faith that the Gods are guiding me with my purpose.

  1. Realize that the solution to fear is not about “just doing stuff in the mundane world”

When we are in fear mode, we’re often thinking about the mundane world problems in our lives. Just centering on the mundane world will keep you stuck. So much of the mundane world is about drama, agony, unsolvable problems, greed, apathy, and fear. Broadcast news and social media thrive on drama and pain. We, witches, must realize that we need to turn to the spiritual world for truth and the essence of the universe.

Witches realize that the spiritual world is just as important as the mundane one. Both have their part in our lives. When we focus too much on one or the other, we find that we get into trouble.

Keeping busy is one thing. But ducking reality in either the spiritual realm or mundane realm is inappropriate. We need balance. Doing ritual and meditation can help you rise out of obsessive thoughts on only mundane world problems.

Instead, you can focus on this prayer:

Goddess, nurture me to know that my fear
Is merely a signal.
Time for me to shift to Calm Acceptance.
Lead me, guide me
That my fears not cast me astray.
Help me focus on balance.
Let Calm Acceptance lead the way.

My Prayer for You this Holiday Season

When was the last time you really felt relief?

For me, it was during the recent power outages and crisis in California.

This season can be especially hard on us witches. So many of us, witches, don’t have a family who understands us. Feeling isolation and having to hide your true nature as a witch can increase depression symptoms.

Perhaps you’re like me and have experienced Holiday Blues. To make things worse I have clinical depression symptoms. I have to be careful about how I go about my daily life. This is even more vivid to me because one of my closest friends committed suicide. It is reported that there is in the U.S.A. 30,000 suicides per year – that’s one suicide every minute.

My husband and I are forever changed by the loss of our close, dear friend “John” to his committing suicide.

We thought John was doing well. However, we had no idea that something was going on when John decided just to sit with us in our living room, instead of going out for a cup of coffee. In his own mind, John was actually saying goodbye to us. We didn’t know it at the time.

Halloween, Departed Loved Ones and a Forgiveness Ritual

“Halloween is a tough time for me,” Henry said.

“How so?” I asked.

“My father’s dead. But the Wiccan idea of inviting him to return in spirit bothers me,” he replied.

“Is there something specific?”

“My dad was a terrible person,” Henry explained.

A significant number of us, Wiccans, have truly mixed feelings about Halloween, which is really our holy day of Samhain. This is because many of us have valid reasons in that we haven’t forgiven a relative or friend who has already died.

To be helpful, I now share a Forgiveness Ritual.

Forgiveness Ritual

What you need:

  • One white candle
  • One black candle
  • One pink candle
  • Candleholders for all the candles
  • Frankincense incense
  • Incense burner
  • Heat-proof surface to place the incense burner
  • Boline

Prepare candles by carving the deceased person’s name with the boline. You’re carving the name of the person you want to forgive onto the black candle. Then carve your name on the white candle. Carve forgiveness on the pink candle.

Cast your Circle.

Cense and asperge your candles.

Arrange the candles in positions that form a triangle. Place the black candle on your left and the pink candle in the front and center. Position the white candle to your right.

Light the black candle and recite the deceased person’s name three times.

Light the white candle and recite your name three times.

Then light the pink candle and say,

I grieve for our differences between you and me.
I forgive wrongdoings on both sides now I see.
Forgiveness and peace for us. So mote it be.

At the close of this Forgiveness Ritual, dismiss the spirit of your departed loved one. You do this by saying the departed person’s name in this way:

[Name], go in peace
[Name], go in peace
[Name], go in peace

And you snuff out the black candle.

Do the Cakes and Wine Ceremony, while you let the pink candle completely burn down.

Close the Circle

Warning: Make sure to dismiss the spirit of your loved one. In certain situations, you do not want the spirit to remain near you. Samhain is a specific time to get together with a departed loved one. However, some spirits retain negativity, and you may want to be free of them throughout the rest of the year.

May this process bring you peace.

How Witches Use Time Management So They Connect with the Gods

“What’s most important to you as a witch?” I asked my friend, Jessica.
“To connect with the Gods,” she replied.
“You look concerned,” I said.
“I’m just not doing it. I’m not showing up for ritual,” she said, frowning.
This began an important conversation.

I’ll share three insights here:

  • The distractions and obligations of everyday life can strangle your spiritual practice.

Fear can exacerbate the situation. That is, many of us are buried in fear-inducing problems with the job, the kids and more. We live in a chaotic world. Not knowing what to do can stifle or even completely stall your spiritual practice. So many of us say, “I just can’t find the time.”

When you pause, you can realize that even just five minutes of meditation can calm you down and clear your thinking. That’s how a spiritual practice can be a lifesaver in the mundane and chaotic world.

  • Gathering with your Coven will give you a safe space for ritual.

When I am with my coven, I feel deeply supported. We support each other and raise each other up. We are a strong group. Being in a coven is having a chosen family.

This family can encourage your spiritual growth. This can be especially good if you don’t have a supportive family at home. If you gather with your coven, someplace outside your own home, you can find it to be an oasis from your mundane surroundings.

  • Pick your morning or evening as your sacred time.

I had a conversation with a friend who is a time management expert who authored three books on the topic. He noticed that time management is not really about lists, it’s about making great choices.

Have you noticed that your only “free time” is in the morning or at night before you go to sleep? You may want to choose one of those times as a designated sacred time. Mornings may work for some better than others because one can be fresh from the night’s rest.

However, if you are a night owl, you may prefer evenings.

I find that evenings seem to be the time I can spare. It may be better for me in the morning, but, at this time, I find that doing a brief meditation session (with my husband) before bedtime helps us both.

Don’t wait to have only an “ideal time.” Three minutes in your parked and locked car (someplace safe), may be helpful. You could recharge before going into your home for “family time.”

Remember, time management is about making great choices.

Choose to connect with the God and Goddess. Even a daily 5-minute meditation practice may truly brighten your life.

How Witches Deal with Desperate Energy when They Cast a Prosperity Spell

“I’m afraid that if I approach doing a Prosperity Spell with the desperate energy I’m feeling, that I may sabotage the spell,” my friend, Nancy, said.

“It’s an important consideration,” I replied. “Make sure to properly deal with any Desperate Energy you have.”

I also brought to Nancy this understanding. Notice the difference between Desperate Energy (loaded with fear) and Activation Energy (loaded with positive intention.)

It is vital to ground the Desperate Energy and get it out of your way, so then you can appropriately cast a Prosperity Spell

Four Elements Related Doing a Prosperity Spell

1) Ground the Desperate Energy and Empty Your Vessel
Push the Desperate Energy down into the earth. Before you do your Prosperity Spell, visualize roots coming out of your feet and diving deep into Mother Earth.

Guide your Desperate Energy down to your feet, out into the roots and into Mother Earth. She receives the energy and safely transforms it. Then, Mother Earth can use the energy in benevolent ways.

With your Desperate Energy released, you now are an empty vessel with room for the good stuff.

2) Refill Your Empty Vessel with Good Clean Energy
Pull energy down from the Moon and Heavens through your Crown Chakra. You now fill in the space that was vacated when you grounded the Desperate Energy. Visualize that you move energy from your Crown Chakra and continue all the way down to your Root Chakra. See the energy fill all your extremities to the tips of your fingers and toes.

3) Cast Your Spell
Now that your energy has been cleansed and evened out, you are ready to cast your spell. You can now raise the clean energy that you know is pure with your positive intentions.

4) Include the Phase, “For This or Better”
Be sure to add the words, For this or better at the end of your spell. I like this clause because you invite the God and Goddess to use Their perceptions and to bless you in ways you may not perceive at this time.

Recently, I did a Prosperity Spell and in less than 20 hours, opportunities came into my family from directions that surprised me. This is an example of “this or better.

Remember to add the above elements to your ritual for enhancing your prosperity.

How the Goddess Supports You When You Feel No Hope

My husband looked so anxious. He was helping me finish my new online course. I felt unsettled, too. Why? At any moment, PG&E (in California) could shut down the power in my city. 

Sure, they were not going to interrupt service to San Francisco, but the small town I live in was at risk.

The first day, they said that they would shut down power to many locations at 12 midnight. Then 12 noon on the next day, then 8 pm. 

I had some thoughts about hope–and about how hope is connected with feeling that you don’t have any control.

Then I realized that the control we have is not over future events.

I had no control related to what the PG&E company might do. They might shut down the power right in the middle of my uploading my material to the online course website. That could wreck my hard drive.

My control was where I direct my focus … in this present moment.

Here is a prayer:

Gracious Goddess
Hear my prayer
Give me hope
And not despair.
Guide me on my true path’s course
Being gentle with no force.
Gracious Goddess
Hear my prayer.
Give me your guidance
With all Your care.

May this enhance your life.
