How Witches Use a Simple Action for Sanity

Do you have certain thoughts that come up and make you feel unhappy? Do they even make you feel worthless?

I’ve learned how to make a shift so I can go forward in my day. When I need to record an audio message, I tell myself to toss the harmful thought into the backseat. I do not let the thought do the driving.

Here are three insights:

  1. Make a vivid image.

To create a powerful image, you might even add the sense of smell. The classic positive image of Grandma making cookies includes the aroma of those cookies. You can recall the taste of them and your feeling loved.

I mentioned my image of toss the harmful thought into the backseat of a car.

What image will help you shift the direction of your thoughts?

  1. Verbally tell yourself a direction.

Here are examples:

  • “Toss the thought into the backseat”
  • “Put the thought on a shelf”
  • “Let the thought flow by on the stream”

The idea of let the thought flow by on the stream ties into a meditation idea of thoughts flowing on a stream of water. You avoid focusing on one thought like picking up a leaf and shoving it close to your eyes. Then you can see nothing else but this “negative thought/leaf.”

Instead, you let the thought float down the stream—away from you.

What verbal direction can you choose to help you shift your thoughts?

  1. Bring the Gods into your thoughts.

Close your eyes and imagine the Gods’ light shining down upon you. In your mind, you can say something like “May the Gods bless me and cleanse me of this thought. Lord and Lady, You gave me this divine spark. Let it shine freely.”

What “mini-prayer” will you choose so you can shift away from a negative thought?

How Solitary Witches Take Their Spiritual Practice to a Higher Level

“Sometimes, I find it tough to be a solitary witch,” a reader of my blog, at GoddessHasYourBack.com, wrote to me.

She asked a question, and I responded. It reminded me of my early days of learning the Craft.

Here are three insights related to what solitary witches have shared with me.

  1. A Solitary Witch may have a desire to gain assurance that she or he is performing rituals correctly.

One way to develop your spiritual practice is to keep a Spells Diary. This will help you refine your technique. You’ll have evidence of when you’re successful and when things fail. This helps you capture the wisdom you can gain from your experiences.

You may find in reading several books that you get contradictory information. I’ve learned to read a number of sources and then find what works for me personally. Again, keeping a Spells Diary is helpful.

  1. A Solitary Witch may seek a connection with like-minded people.

Like many things, when we seek to develop a new friendship, particularly through online groups, it is a good idea to go slow. Pay close attention to how the new person conducts herself or himself. People who are trustworthy in small things may also be trustworthy in more crucial things.

Some people may be goodhearted but still misinformed. It takes a process to pay attention to see if someone is a good addition to your personal circle.

In years past, I would attend PantheaCon, and I enjoyed meeting and reconnecting with many people. With the related health crisis this year, in-person gatherings are difficult.

One friend suggested doing a Zoom call and watching the other person’s body language. Sometimes, you can get more understanding of a new person by seeing them on video.

I look forward to the day when the world has moved beyond the current health crisis. Having a community or circle provides real support. With trustworthy people in your life, you can feel more connected to your spiritual path.

  1. A Solitary Witch may seek more comfort from the Gods.

Consider having a daily meditation practice (even just a 5-minute session) which can give you more time of feeling connected and comforted by the Gods.

In addition, you can use divinatory tools (The Tarot, a pendulum, runes, and more). You can ask questions and receive answers. For more about the process, listen to my podcast Episode 88 “How Witches Interpret Inconsistencies In Tarot and Other Divination Practices”

How Witches Take Ownership of the Transitions in Their Lives

Have you recently gone through some type of transition that was rough?

I’ve noticed myself and friends going through transitions at this time. Often, it feels like one is a piece of cork buffeted on the ocean.

Then, I realized that, as witches, we can choose to make the meaning of our transition. Transitions happen to everyone. And as witches, we can make these situations more profound.

Sometimes, a transition can cause us to wonder: “What does this all mean?”

Here is a prayer for helping you squeeze the meaning out of a transition—as if it were a metaphorical orange.

A Prayer During a Time of Transition

Magnificent Lord and Gracious lady,
Let the meaning of this [transition] be revealed.
May this transition cause me to be healed.
Breathe in the love and exhale the hate,
Let in the message to invigorate.
Stich by stitch I now make myself whole once more,
Sewing myself together whole to the core.
Growing through this transition through and through,
Finding my true self through this journey, too.

How Witches Create an Energetic and Spiritual Reserve

“I almost can’t believe it. Every time I hear the news, something else is going wrong. Sometimes, I don’t feel I can’t take anymore,” my friend, Amanda, said.

During our conversation, I realized that many of us are just existing on the edge. There’s an old phrase that many people are just one paycheck away from disaster.

We all need reserves in our everyday and spiritual lives.

 Here I’ll talk about developing your own energetic and spiritual reserve.

  1. Take care of your body

Make sure to get enough rest and eat nutritious foods. Even just drinking a glass of water can help. I had a family member getting ready to do a live online show. He didn’t feel so well. After just one glass of water, he was in much better shape. Now that the fires are subsiding (at this moment: only 26 major wildfires remain) in California, I’m back outside doing my daily walk.

  1. Take care of your spiritual self

Devote some time to meditation. Even a five-minute daily session of meditation is helpful.

You can make up your own phrases to focus on.

Here is an example of phrases to use for focusing:

Powerful Lord and Gracious Lady
Grant me a spiritual reserve
And help me keep it and preserve
Inner peace and energy
I’m not alone, I can see.
So Mote It Be.

  1. Develop new contacts in our spiritual community

Gathering in an online conversation with fellow members of our spiritual community can lift your spirits.

Talking with someone over a Zoom call or a standard phone call can help ease a burden of something that is troubling you.

Devote time, perhaps once a week, to talk with certain friends or family members.

You might create a “buddy system” pattern. I have a family member who talks, on the phone, with a fellow novelist three times a week. They provide each other with real support.

Talking with a friend can help you ease your stress. This support you’re feeling is a reserve of energy.

This eases a sense of feeling alone.

How Witches Deal with Not Finding a Coven or Mentor at this Moment

Have you lost hope of getting a mentor or finding a coven to join? When I was starting my journey with witchcraft, I couldn’t find a coven or a teacher. I felt a loss of hope.

Here are three insights from my journey that may help you.

  • Start as a Solitary Witch

Start as a solitary witch and dedicate yourself to the Gods. That’s what I did.

I didn’t know where to start so I went into a bookstore and asked about the topic Wicca. (Now, we can go to Amazon. To be helpful, I’ve written 9 books)

I studied over a period of years. When I felt I was ready, I did a meditation. And the Gods made Their Presence known to me.

  • Talk with the Gods

During my meditation, I talked with the God and the Goddess and told Them my plight.

“When you are ready, the teacher will appear,” They replied.

This bothered me because I felt I was ready. However, with that response, I proved I wasn’t.

The Gods are wise, and I respect Their timing.

So, I continued practicing. I continued doing my own rituals, prayers, and chants.

The Gods have Their reasons. The Gods have more information than we do. Because of this, They know what is ahead on our paths before we do. They know what is in our best interest.

  • Keep Looking for Possibilities

Years later after that meditation session of asking the Gods for a mentor, I found one.

I moved to a new neighborhood, and there was my mentor. Soon, I was accepted into a coven.

In a coven and with a mentor, I discovered so much that was new to me.

Here is the truth: So much of the Craft is not written in books. The things one learns person-to-person are, to a great extent, oath-bound. That means that one is guided to leave such material out of books.

True dedication to the Craft is a life path. You grow into it. With a mentor and a coven, I learned the secrets of the Craft. Many times, I had experiences that were true revelations to me. And my practice grew!

Perhaps, the Gods wanted me to grow into the person who would truly understand and appreciate the secrets of the Craft. These secrets have a certain element of power connected to them. They must be shared with wise, dedicated people.

My years of solitary practice demonstrated my dedication and devotion.

So, keep practicing and show the God and the Goddess that you are serious, dedicated, and devoted.

How Witches Feel Their Feelings and Grow

“It hurts too much. If I just had the right spiritual thoughts, couldn’t I just avoid this pain?” my friend, John, asked.

“I hear you. You’re hurting bad. I want to skip pain, too. But I learned about something called a spiritual bypass,” I replied.

Recently, I came across this quote:

“Spiritual bypass shields us from the truth. It disconnects us from our feelings and helps us avoid the big picture. It is more about checking out than checking in.” – Ingrid Clayton, psychologist

I realize that, many times, I’d like to avoid feeling pain. But if I try to just shift to the “higher point of view,” I may be denying something real … that I have felt a loss and the pain is something I just need to experience.

For example, I lost Steve, a dear friend who passed away. I didn’t sit in the grief. I tried to shift to thinking he was in a better place and that was it. But I never truly dealt with the feelings of loss. That is, until I shifted back to my grief and felt it fully and explored what was going on with my feelings. I honored the pain of the loss. In this way, I processed it in a healthy way.

I have three insights about grief, loss and how to grow.

1.Say something aloud about your feelings.

I have learned that talking to a friend and saying aloud how I feel about something is truly healing. It helps take the burden off my back. If you are the friend, just listen. You don’t have to fix it.

2.Ask the Gods for clarity

Doing meditation can help, too. By going into meditation, you can ask the Gods to help you understand the reasons and situations that led to the loss. You can ask for healing. The Gods are great listeners.

“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul.” – Carl Jung

It is true that in witchcraft we strive to know one’s self.

Knowing yourself is the true focus of the Craft. Knowing how you deal with loss can be a big step to understanding you.

3.Express the Feel It and Move Forward Prayer

Here is a prayer to help.

The Feel It and Move Forward Prayer

Lord and Lady help me dig deep.
Light the way to all that I seek.
My feelings now I do give space,
To feel it all and weigh my case.
Give me light on my path to peace,
To help me move on in one piece.
Stitch by stitch mend my broken heart.
With Your support, I make my start
As I So Will, So Mote It Be.

May this prayer help you heal and continue growing on your journey.

How Witches Deal with “Tired of Being Afraid”

“How are you doing?” my friend, Sarah, asked me some time ago.

“I’m tired of being afraid,” I replied.

How about you? Do you find that much of your day is clouded by your feeling fearful?

  1. Identify the moments of “Calm Acceptance in this present moment.”

I’ve learned that much of fear is connected to focusing on the future.

I remember this quote:

“I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” – Mark Twain

This quote reminds me that much that I’m afraid of is likely not to happen. For example, I was living in a particular location, and I thought that I would get kicked out. The truth is: I lived in that place for several years, and things were relatively peaceful.

In recent years, I’ve focused on this idea: Calm Acceptance. When I need to get to Calm Acceptance, I focus on the here and now. I look at this present moment and think about just taking one step at a time. My starting point is to realize I can only deal with this moment. Then I shift into the understanding that I am doing the best that I can.

  1. Shift to the focus on “The Gods will guide me to what I need to do.”

To help me shift to Calm Acceptance, I center my thoughts on The Gods will guide me to what I need to do. I ask the Gods to guide my actions for the best outcome.

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who taught comparative religion. He noted that in some spiritual paths, there is an idea: “You are having a human life which includes just enough problems so you need to shift into guiding your mind to peace.”

Holding my faith that the Gods will guide me to what I need to do helps me to return to Calm Acceptance. Furthermore, I have faith that the Gods are guiding me with my purpose.

  1. Realize that the solution to fear is not about “just doing stuff in the mundane world”

When we are in fear mode, we’re often thinking about the mundane world problems in our lives. Just centering on the mundane world will keep you stuck. So much of the mundane world is about drama, agony, unsolvable problems, greed, apathy, and fear. Broadcast news and social media thrive on drama and pain. We, witches, must realize that we need to turn to the spiritual world for truth and the essence of the universe.

Witches realize that the spiritual world is just as important as the mundane one. Both have their part in our lives. When we focus too much on one or the other, we find that we get into trouble.

Keeping busy is one thing. But ducking reality in either the spiritual realm or mundane realm is inappropriate. We need balance. Doing ritual and meditation can help you rise out of obsessive thoughts on only mundane world problems.

Instead, you can focus on this prayer:

Goddess, nurture me to know that my fear
Is merely a signal.
Time for me to shift to Calm Acceptance.
Lead me, guide me
That my fears not cast me astray.
Help me focus on balance.
Let Calm Acceptance lead the way.

How Witches Use Time Management So They Connect with the Gods

“What’s most important to you as a witch?” I asked my friend, Jessica.
“To connect with the Gods,” she replied.
“You look concerned,” I said.
“I’m just not doing it. I’m not showing up for ritual,” she said, frowning.
This began an important conversation.

I’ll share three insights here:

  • The distractions and obligations of everyday life can strangle your spiritual practice.

Fear can exacerbate the situation. That is, many of us are buried in fear-inducing problems with the job, the kids and more. We live in a chaotic world. Not knowing what to do can stifle or even completely stall your spiritual practice. So many of us say, “I just can’t find the time.”

When you pause, you can realize that even just five minutes of meditation can calm you down and clear your thinking. That’s how a spiritual practice can be a lifesaver in the mundane and chaotic world.

  • Gathering with your Coven will give you a safe space for ritual.

When I am with my coven, I feel deeply supported. We support each other and raise each other up. We are a strong group. Being in a coven is having a chosen family.

This family can encourage your spiritual growth. This can be especially good if you don’t have a supportive family at home. If you gather with your coven, someplace outside your own home, you can find it to be an oasis from your mundane surroundings.

  • Pick your morning or evening as your sacred time.

I had a conversation with a friend who is a time management expert who authored three books on the topic. He noticed that time management is not really about lists, it’s about making great choices.

Have you noticed that your only “free time” is in the morning or at night before you go to sleep? You may want to choose one of those times as a designated sacred time. Mornings may work for some better than others because one can be fresh from the night’s rest.

However, if you are a night owl, you may prefer evenings.

I find that evenings seem to be the time I can spare. It may be better for me in the morning, but, at this time, I find that doing a brief meditation session (with my husband) before bedtime helps us both.

Don’t wait to have only an “ideal time.” Three minutes in your parked and locked car (someplace safe), may be helpful. You could recharge before going into your home for “family time.”

Remember, time management is about making great choices.

How Witches Change for the Better

“Oh, dear Gods, I’m an idiot!” I said. Out loud. Why? Because I had tried to reformat a thumb drive, but I possibly brushed a key and … The computer reformatted the main hard drive!

Disaster. Years of data gone!

Instantly, I was absolutely furious with myself.

Later, after calming down and beginning a 26-hour ordeal of working to get some of my data back, I thought about how I’d like to change for the better. I’d like to stop beating myself up emotionally.

Have you thought about how you could do better if you could make a healthy change?

I went on a quest to learn about change.

These two quotes seized my attention:

“… let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you.” – Doreen Valiente writing in the voice of the Goddess—in The Charge of The Goddess

I had a couple of insights about changing for the better.

  1. Develop Calm Acceptance

At a certain point, after the hard drive disaster happened, I shifted to a moment when I told myself, “It’s gone. All I can do is recover what I can.” From this moment, I experienced a bit of calm acceptance. Then, I started to methodically lookup on cnet.com the possible software program I could get to recover the data.

  1. Pray to the Gods

I prayed, “Dear Gods, help me find a way to recover the data. Stay with me through the process.” The Goddess talks about combinations like “honor and humility.” I’m reminded of how we can all make mistakes, and compassion is necessary.

I also learned something else. It’s good to develop a “Big Trouble Tool Kit.” Recently, I was reflecting on this situation, and I realized that I didn’t think to do a Candle Lighting Ritual. It would have been good for me to have something written down. It reminds me of “In case of fire, break glass.”

So, in case of big trouble, here is a Candle Lighting Ritual Prayer:

Dear Gods, I feel devastated.
Guide me on the path to calm acceptance.
Guide me to take appropriate actions
For a better outcome than I can see now.
Thank You.
So Mote It Be.
